Poison pill initiative is working.
Their fares are already on the same level as the big 3, while offering none of the perks or amenities. They’re going to tank. There’s no reason now to fly Southwest if you don’t have to. Zero.
The one free bag is just the same offer other companies give with a credit card. Go to seat assignments and charge extra for premium seats before giving up the two free bags.
Not nearly enough people have been saying this!
That’s wild! I always assumed that Southwest was the budget option.
They already announced they’re doing this too.
Removing the free bags and assigned seats truly removes any reason to fly southwest. I do wonder if they think they’ve got mid market direct flights cornered so they’re the best option regardless of price.
This is the case for MCI. The majority of our direct flights are Southwest.
It’s either them or Spirit out of Indy and I’d rather walk than fly Spirit.
What’s the WN value proposition rn?
Competitively priced non-stop routes in select markets with service/amenities below DL/UA/AA and above the other “low cost” players?
Industry has met them for the most part on changeable fares.
Bags are gone.
Seating is standard now.
Reliability / on time is average?
Reads like a future HBR case study.
I saw this a couple of weeks ago and thought it was odd that Delta is adding a nonstop between two non-hub cities. Do other legacy carriers do this and I just haven’t noticed?
Isn’t RDU a focus market for Delta? Like a mini hub?
And now it’s getting even worse thanks prepare to be shocked Elliott Investment Management, an investment firm that took over 5 board seats last year and wants sweeping changes to make them more profitable. PE firms truly ruin everything for consumers!
Not with ATL so close by. AA used to treat RDU as a focus city and even had a flight to LHR partially subsidized by the Research Triangle.
Seems like a thing that’s done for very niche situations where there’s demand and $ to be made. I saw last week at MCO, UAL has MCO-CLE.
Delta is trying to build RDU back up. They are also restarting the RDU-CDG flight.
That’s an old route revisited. Thanks to the days of Continental Airlines using CLE as a small hub and subsequent FF inheritances, UA has a decent frequent flyer base in CLE despite the dehubbing of the airport.
Went on a cruise for my buddies bachelor party and met an alarming number of people from Ohio. Seems like they love to vacation in Orlando for some reason
Southwest’s CTO had said they would lose money by charging for bags. He, of course, is now fired.
I flew to Tucson from Chicago a couple weeks ago, and they were like $100 more than United. United was pretty fucking expensive, but Southwest was over $1k to go Chicago to Tucson and back nonstop.
