Most pilots I have flown with will keep the seatbelt sign on for a while to start the flight so the inflight can get their service done and not as many people are walking up and down the aisles. We obviously know that people don’t listen to the sign but we try to help out the crew.
Also, do people not know there are bathrooms in the airport. It’s amazing how many people have to use the bathroom while boarding!
I always try to use the bathroom right before a flight and I do my best not to enter those flying Petri dishes.
The science behind “breaking the seal” escapes me but for some reason it seems like that makes me need to use the bathroom more on flights and I hate it
Stop doing that! You’re leaving the sign on when it’s not needed for safety, knowing that people are going to ignore it. That means they are more likely to ignore it when they shouldn’t. The seat belt sign is supposed to be for safety, not passenger management.
Is the story of the boy who cried wolf just completely lost on pilots?
If you have to ignore the seatbelt sign to go to the bathroom in the first 30 minutes of a flight you’re either a moron or a small child.
Need to start an airlines demerit system to start getting rid of shitty flyers.
In my experience, way more people buy a snack or drink on flights in the UK/Europe and the Pilots still turn off the seat belt sign at 10k feet.
I wonder what increased public awareness of the double ding would do. The double chime occurs when a flight gets above or descends below 10,000. That’s the only defined altitude in the F.A.R.s with regard to safety (all aircraft movements below 10,000 ft are defined as Critical Safety Time - pilots are supposed to cease non-flight safety communications when in this state.
If there’s forecasted turb on climb or descent, the pilots should make an announcement stating such, otherwise, the double dings should be the indication that getting up is fine.
I also understand the point of giving the flight attendants opportunity to do food/beverage service.
I would be very happy if the seat belt sign was only on for the first 30 minutes of a flight! When it creeps closer to an hour without any bumps, it’s ridiculous.
Also, sometimes shit happens. Literally. Or you’re running from a connection and can’t stop at the bathroom. It takes an hour from pushback to takeoff. Etc.
More communication from pilots about turbulence and the seat belt sign would greatly help the problem.
Do pilots not know that there are bars in the airport?
Look at us!
Bradley is excellent. Wish for the days when I’d just stroll through security at Bradley as I wait in one of those interminable lines at Logan.
More flight cancellations thanks to American Airlines bombs from WWII exploding underground.
If we’re talking about safety I would leave the seatbelt sign on for the whole entire flight. We don’t know when turbulence is going to happen. We have forecasts and other pilot reports but nothing is accurate. I’d guess that the majority of turbulence injuries are clear air turbulence that no one saw coming. The seatbelt sign is very very low on my list of priorities, especially below 18,000’.
Thanks. Added move to the watch later list.
Trying to imagine American Airlines in the 1970s accidentally showing “Debbie Does Dallas,” thinking it was a promo for the big hub…
Sitting in an exit row on a 73-8 MAX.
Never felt more alive.
Hope you’re drinking a Red Bull!
Can’t wait for TC to do a solo scout mission to Mongolia for a potential Tourist Sauce season. Provocative stuff
I’m crediting Spencer Hall with this interest spike in Mongolia
