Trap Draw 131: NOLA

I second the Ruby Slipper recommendation. Go to the one on Magazine St. in the Irish Channel before 11:00 AM and check in on Yelp to avoid waiting an hour plus. The one downtown gets packed on the weekends.

A muffuletta from Central Grocery and a tall cold domestic might be THE hangover cure

One thing I can’t recommend enough is to go see a show at Preservation Hall. Tickets are first come first serve and cash only. Get there early so you can snag a seat (on the floor). Best part is, it’s right next door to Pat O’s so you can snag yourself a hurricane or two for your wait in line as well as the show

How have we not talked about The Cat’s Meow yet?

I was there that weekend. I was on a streetcar and I heard a phrase from an LSU sorority girl that I’ll never forget. She said “I just don’t want to blackout before 3 o’clock”

For 1 bag of crawfish.

Rinse/wash crawfish.

Fill boiling pot about 1/2 full with water. Add halved lemons, halved oranges (optional but I always add), halved onions, whole garlic, and red potatoes. Bring water to boil. Once boiling add about 1 large bag of boil seasoning (I always use Louisiana brand) and 1/2 - 1 whole small bottle of liquid boil. Stir in and bring water back to a rolling boil.

Once back to a rolling boil, let boil for 5 minutes and then lower in crawfish. Also add in mushrooms and sausage at this time. Cover and allow water to come back to a boil. Once back boiling, add frozen corn, mix, then recover and cut off heat.

Let crawfish sit for 20-30 minutes. I start occasionally tasting and stirring them at around 20 minutes until they get to where I want them. Crawfish will start to sink when ready.

Do you run cold water on the outside or out in I’ve to stop them from cooking during the soak?

Haha yea I just didnt want to get that technical with him. I usually spray the outside of the pot or drop a bag of ice in the water once I cut the heat. Will allow you to soak them longer and take on more spice.

I may be in the minority as there is a lot of Pat Os love going on in here, rightfully so, but as far as New Orleans drinks go, the OG Hurricane might be the most overrated.

I made the mistake of skimming some of this thread when I was only halfway done and this just derailed the second half for me. So great take but I hate that I read it.

My fave New Orleans experience is grabbing a Muffuletta and two Dixie beers from Central grocery on Decatur then walking to Jackson Square, finding a shady spot and chowing down as the world walks by. Eat half the muffuletta, drink a Dixie and give the rest to one of the displaced souls that call the square home.

One of my favorite meals I had in NOLA was at Sylvain just off Jackson Square. The pork shoulder and cheesy grits I had there were sooooooo good.

Also enjoy the burgers at yo mama’s (across from pat o’s).

No one wants to peak too soon. You don’t wanna be the friend who gets carried home or to the hotel then left as your friends go out to dinner haha.

I’m just going back and looking through my photos from New Orleans now and I want to go back so badly.

Like you said, that late afternoon nap always comes in clutch 100% of the time.

Surprised we didn’t hear anything about hand grenades on bourbon street. Those things always made for a fun night on bourbon street.

the small tropical isle was always our meeting spot when in town. no better way to start a Nola trip than a hand grenade or two.

I agree, we always have one person who thinks they are being smart and gets the drink with the plastic shark in it instead as if they are making smart decisions.

Dixie Beer is no longer and is now Faubourg Brewing.

This was in the late 90’s… and Dixie was a shitty beer anyways. Still good times though.
