I had a conversation with a super in Auburn Hills a few years ago who said something similar. People want to play courses that look like Augusta. Need more Carnoustie and less Augusta.
Another benefit to courses that are watered less: longer drives.
More places THAT CAN should be like Carnoustie.
Quit watering and fertilizing where I live, and golf would be: nice tee box, a whole lot of red clay and mud for 400 yards, then a nice green.
Yes, it is definitely a balance. Of course, watering enough for the fairway to have grass exist. But, some places have the other extreme of acres and acres of grass between tee boxes and fairways, around the edges, between holes etc that every square of which inch is doused in water to be as green as possible. I’m not suggesting we get rid of fairway grass completely, I am just agreeing with the sentiment that the vast majority of golf courses use way too much water. Cutting down on the amount of grass and the amount rough and fairways are watered seem like logical solutions to me.
My buddies parents used to live on Mackinac Island when his dad was the Principal/Superintendent/AD of the school on the island. I had the opportunity to go to the island the first week of February about 10 years ago to visit with him one weekend in college. One of the most unique experiences. Hopped in a tiny plane to fly over and back. Basically had the island to ourselves and could snowmobile around all day. Was a ton of fun. Spoke to a few locals who have snowmobiled across the ice a few times. Zero chance I’d ever do that.
It goes without saying that this season has seen another epic leap in production quality, with the related story telling has somehow made the golf secondary, but even more enjoyable! Shoutout to @djpie who continues to bring all of the feels into what looks like another basic buddy golf trip on paper.
On the story telling note, I am on the other side of the globe in Tasmania and got the chance to play Cape Wickham on King Island a couple of weeks ago. On the back of this season, I messaged Mike DeVries on instagram the night before we played it, and he sent back tips on how to play the course within the hour. When I messaged back after the round about how amazing the experience was, he didn’t just like the post, he tried to video call me to discuss all of my thoughts! Tragically I was driving back to the hotel at the time and missed it, but the fact he did that to a nobody on the other side of the globe shows what sort of guy he is. Absolute legend, and his courses are even better. When Seven Mile Beach (https://7milegolf.com.au/) gets up and running, you must all book to come down here.
What a goddamn mensch that man is. This is insane in the best way. Wow.
Awesome story. Can’t say enough good things about Mike.
Been listening to indoorcat on repeat the last two days. an amazing find.
One of the first shots from TS that really made me stop and rewind. Incredible.
Big thanks for pointing this out, I think I’ve listened to In the Unknown about 2 dozen times in the last 48 hours
This has been my favorite season of Tourist Sauce ever. It’s the competition and camaraderie of the Carolinas and Cali seasons but with the cinematography and insanely dialed 4K-worthy stuff of Oregon.
Last season in this very thread, many (including me) said the production value was next-level but it felt like a Bandon commercial.
This season has been a fun dudes trip and competition first, second, and third and an excellent Michigan commercial after that.
The last two episodes are like when Steph Curry has 8 threes already and then launches one from closer to the mid-court logo than the 3-point line and turns around running the other way before the ball hits its high-point. #InTheZone
Yo, @djpie, @MerchCzar:
Turns out: not in the licky’s and chewy’s category
This has nothing to do with Michigan but based on @djpie’s appearance on another podcast this week, when the host mentioned he’d rewatched the first two episodes of Tourist Sauce (Australia) I have done the same and aside from the very obvious hockey stick climb in production value, I must say I am not quite sure I realized how many LBs (pounds, not linebackers) Mr Pie has dropped. Gotta be at least 20, right? Way to go, Dennis - keeping that off is a challenge I’m well familiar with. Nicely done.
I was slinging drinks at the local Chamber of Commerce Christmas party tonight and turns out my neighbor’s dad caddied at Belvedere in the 1940s. Looks like I’m going to Grand Haven for a week next year.
So it all ends tonight right? Anyone looking for action on the finale? I really think Neil gets the monkey off his back this time.
I’ve got a 20 on my hitter @Randy if you want to take the Czar*!
*For match #1 - mea culpa
If randy wins the initial match, will they have a chip off or play another 18 hole match?
