Good Ride Cowboy, Good Ride!
@MerchCzar descrbing Garth Brooks from the alien perspective (you chose this guy!?) might be the mega AlonzoMourning.gif
Listening to this as a Garth Fan who had not seen the documentary might have been the ultimate experience. Just pure, unadultered bewilderment from some Garth adjacent perspectives. The girlfriend was yelling at me to listen to something else in the car which I cannot emphasize enough is my highest praise for this work.
āA worn out tape of Chris LeDoux, lonely women and bad boozeā¦ā
LeDoux is part of the very fabric that Garth created his persona around and I loved it. Growing up in KY in late 80s / early 90s, there were only 2 people who mattered in country music⦠Dwight Yoakam and Garth Brooks.
This was legitimately one of my favorite NLU podcasts of all time. Iāve stored this one for a second listen somewhere down the line⦠I donāt even want to watch the doc, I just want to hear it through the translation of @djpie and @MerchCzar. Well done gents.
So stupid and good.
We like that.
Edit: I managed to screw up the quote. Itās actually āI like thatā. The Starters podcast (and now No Dunks) used audio drops from Garthās first Facebook video and that was one of them.
Hereās the video for reference:
@djpie @MerchCzar Iām in the ānot really interested in Garth Brooks/only know a couple of his songsā group and had kind of disregarded this podcast when it first appeared. Then I read a couple of the comments here and realized it was going to be something I needed to listen to.
Went for a walk after work tonight and anyone who saw me on my walk mustāve wondered what I was on. Had a goofy grin on my face the entire time (except for when I was laughing out loud). That I can absolutely love a piece of content about another piece of content that I am highly unlikely to ever see, about a person I donāt particularly care about is a tribute to what a great job the three of you did.
This podcast was a drive right down the middle for me. Iām a novice country fan that grew up in the 90s. I also happened to see Garth at Mile High this summer.
The Doc
Catching the first part a few months ago, I was wondering if I was the only person witnessing this madness. The crying, the canned lines, the direct to camera looks, him lazily building a fire on his property - its incredible.
Garth Show
Its a spectacle like Iāve never seen, and Iāve been to a lot of concerts. The way he packed a stadium and got people riled up was something else. Callin Baton Rouge he put purple and yellow lights (LSU colors) all over. Played a lot of cool covers. It was a 3 hour drunken sing along.
Hes also a specimen in that his current physical makeup does not lead you to believe heād be able to sprint around a circle for 3 hours while singing and not keel over.
Watching this video gives me the same feeling as when āold naked guyā walks by in the gym locker roomā¦
Wow. So. Much. Dramatic. Pausing.
Raw stuff. Real stuff.
This may be the truest thing said in this entire thread. Itās pretty amazing.
Just going to leave this here:
Just listened to this episode. Immediately turned on āThat Summerā and they were right. Serious statutory vibes for a #1 song.
Just a few years younger than the guys but could totally relate that Garth was always there but never understood the size.
Listen to Wheeler Walker Jr. talk about Garth on Your Momās House podcast is wonderful. Iām half convinced that Garth is really a serial killer.
Please tell me that SOMEONE⦠ANYONE⦠is watching Garth and Trisha on CBS tonight.
Its all the Garthisms that you could hope for wrapped in to a live TV COVID-19 special.
So I went back and listened to the Garth podcast again. Big fan of the perfect club episodes.
I canāt help but notice that @djpie and @MerchCzar missed a perfect opportunity to dig into the Garth Brooks serial killer theory that is riddled in the comments of his instagram. Literally every comment on his Instagram is asking him āwhere are the bodies, Garth?ā, āthe families need closureā, or āmy girlfriend is still missing after she went to your concert.ā
I know Tom Segura is responsible, but it very well may be one of the best inside jokes ever.
Iām based in the UK and couldnāt find a link to watch āThe Road I am Onā. However, just logged on to Netflix this afternoon and voila, here it is. Will look forward to listen to the pod again after Iāve watched this.
Watched the doc last night on Netflix and had to dive into the pod this morning. It did not disappoint! I had actual tears down my face when @MerchCzar thought Billy Joel was in a wheelchair.
As a teenager in the early 90s, I canāt even count the amount of times I line danced to āFriends in Low Places.ā Garthās music was a staple of my high school years. I was also shook to learn that he didnāt write any of his songs. And it was only in the past year that I really listened to the lyrics of āThat Summerā and was totally WTF.
This was one of my favorite TD pods ever along with The Franchise episode.
The pod had me laughing out loud so many times.
I havenāt watched the doc and think at this point it could only disappoint. I think Iām going to stick with my imagined version of it based on the podcast.
