Thanks! I posted a “hello world” in that thread when I first joined a couple weeks ago and have been lurking in there since.

Hey @Double_Bogey_Dave…any particular reason why I need “moderator approval” to start a new event thread? Since when do we need mod approval to start anything around here?

I just started one, suck it!

Hahaha…looks like DBDs Iranian vote suppression campaign is working!

I couldn’t start a new thread the other day either, @Double_Bogey_Dave said I needed to venmo him $20 before it could be approved.

Not quite sure why, usually most posts that need approval are from members, but this does happen with event threads, probably a setting for that category.

Send me the $20 and I’ll approve it.

Would be nice if users could be assigned specific attendee roles. That way if an update is being made for a refuge event, the organizers could @attendees and then those attending would be able to easily find the update post.

Along the same vein, is there a way to pin messages? Or create a “thread summary” that could be used for thread rules or event details? On desktop, there’s a ton of empty white space I could see it be utilized.

I think the simple solution is to quote important comments and put them in the top post. There are some limitations within discourse that might pose an issue to some of that.

There’s not a Wright Thompson Trapdraw thread yet. That’s my feedback. What have everyone been doing all day?

Topic: Putting out the Refuge (Dumpster) Fire

Man, I missed some stuff this summer/fall. I hadn’t been on in a couple months and I come back and a week or two later the refuge is shutting down to non-nest members. I catch up on the nest pods (@Randy the April Fowler pod has a llllloooooooong runway and got me on thxgiving), and I hear coded language about some cheating scandal I missed, burner accounts, and general tomfoolery.

My Nest membership renewed, so I have some skin in the game. I’ve been around forums for longer than some of you have been alive. The most successful one is a 100% member funded site for automotive enthusiasts, but has the political section where anything goes, and is almost entirely unmoderated.

However, when new members show up they can register anonymously but upon the first post the collective group basically “demands” to know the persons real name, who they race with, etc. I think having to put your actual name behind your posts adds a layer of accountability that would clean up 95% of the problems. The Refuge would become more self policing, and not waste any of "the guys’ " time or the moderators.

In racing we have the KISS principle (Keep It Simple, Stupid), and I don’t think we need to outsmart ourselves here either. So what’s my actual suggestion?

If you want to browse the refuge anonymously, or maybe be on some very restricted posting privileges (count and topics), go right ahead. You want the world opened up, put your name to it. If you want to skewer somebody for cheating in a NIT qualifier or whatever the hell happened…go right ahead.

But OWN it.

I’d get rid of the likes too, but I think just putting your name to your keyboard would take care of most everything.

Or…not this.

well thought out rebuttal.

but why? if you’re saying something here you’d be ashamed to have your family find out about, should you be saying it in the first place?

I could go on for days about why that’s the worst idea and doesn’t actually solve your problem but I won’t bother. That’s always the first half-assed solution thrown out when people want to “clean up their message boards” and it never fucking works.

The response gave the intellectual heft that its facile progenitor deserved.
