Second this. The light touch moderation has been perfect and there has been some really great discussion, which is not easy to achieve given the lightning rod topic.
The auto-lock of a thread that was 99% civil is kind of a bummer, but I understand the reason
It has been nice to see. Hopefully we all learn to be empathetic and to listen to each other instead of trying to get in the last word. If people want to name call, they can go to Facebook.
I’ve always thought the Refuge was what the internet was supposed to be and this week has been reflective of that.
I’ll own that one, I locked it, and I still feel it was the right moderation choice. That thread was 99% civil and honestly a fantastic thread…until it was 100% not civil and getting brigaded. Keep in mind if you weren’t watching live you’re not seeing a bunch of the flagged content that got nixed.
There’s a point in (lowercase d) discourse where it’s clearly a tailspin and it’s not suddenly going to become civil again. We’ve locked like 6 threads total in the entire life of the Refuge, so I take a bit of umbrage with the notion that we ever “automatically” do it.
Editing here so the clarification is on this one: I hadn’t read through all my notifications yet and didn’t realize a thread had literally automatically locked due to flags. Sorry
To be fair, when I read the lock explanation I thought it was triggered automatically as well.
Appreciate the response and fully support the idea to do so.
I didn’t mean to imply that you manually locked it, but rather I thought the forum did so automatically because of the number of flags.
But I now realize I combined the two separate messages:
“closed for at least 4 hours due to a large number of community flags”
“automatically open in 4 hours.”
Just a misunderstanding and my apologies.
It’s just frustrating when nuanced, thoughtful, and deep discussions keep getting brigaded with racist and/or intentionally inflammatory bullshit by this moron. I guess there’s nothing that can be done if he has nothing better to do than continuously make new accounts, though.
No, that’s my apology, I hadn’t finished reading all of my alerts yet…I didn’t realize what had happened in the “None of Us Can Breathe” thread. You’re correct, that was literally automatically locked by the forum due to the number of community flags (which I honestly think we’ve been lucky enough not to have happen yet). I thought you were referring to me locking the other thread (Race, Gender, Socioeconomic Barriers, and Sea Lioning).
My apologies!
He who must not be named is back.
No worries
Any chance it can be unlocked? The conversation since it was created has been very civil from several differing viewpoints and just came down to one “moron” as @coozapalooza rightly put it.
I just tried and the system re-locked it, I think I have to deal with this huge pile of pending flags first.
Yeah, I saw when I clicked back into it. No problem - I don’t envy that task
Never go full Eric Denver.
What do the statistics say about (alleged) airline pilots being stupid assholes?
Idk @swade seems like a cool dude
50% of commercial airline pilots are assholes. Statistics can never be misleading.
I think the keyword is alleged here though. I think we are confident @swade is a pilot

I have this t-shirt. It’s a useful tool to spot fellow Letterkenny enthusiasts.
I mean, I’ve gotten a few Refugees tickets to duels. If I was buying people airline tickets to help bolster a fake identity on a golf message board, well that’d be Eric Denver level crazy.
