My brother is a non-native Minnesotan who has lived there for the last 15 years.
I asked him about Culver’s and his response was “Not a fan. I think DQ puts out a better product. I’d rather drive 15 minutes to DQ than 2 minutes to Culvers.”
Also said the DQ Blizzard menu is stronger than the Culvers concrete.
Not trying to be a troll. Just curious if this is mindset that exists or if this is a by-product of him not being a native.
Hard disagree. Blizzards are still fire but (to me) soft serve ice cream is a diluted imitation of the real thing. Custard gets closer in the texture department. And concretes can be customized, so it sounds like he’s just doing that part wrong.
I can only speak for myself. And I’m not going to yuck your brothers yums here because frankly, I will eat them both happily.
That said, there is a big difference between soft serve ice cream and frozen custard texture wise. I do love the variety that DQ offers in terms of specialty blizzards and what not, but I find the texture and the life span of a concrete mixer to be preferred. It’s rare that I worry about a mixer melting and spilling all over my car, but I do worry about that with DQ. I don’t think the soft serve ice cream lasts long enough from a consistency perspective.
I won’t say no to either once. They both are good in their own way, but saying DQ soft serve is worth a longer trip… that just doesn’t work for me.
If any of you Ope’ers ever come out to the Palm Springs area I’ll meet you at Keedy’s in Palm Desert for the best milkshake/malt and pancakes you’ll ever have.
