The NLU Podcast Ep 1197: Neil Learns How a PGA Tour Event Gets Built

Ahead of next week’s BMW Championship at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, we visit with Patrick Timson - Vice President of Tournament Operations for the Western Golf Association - and a number of members of his staff - to get an idea of everything that goes into the build out and staging of a tour event.

I haven’t listened to the nest podcast yet. So tell me to kick rocks if so, but I’m curious how events have figured out the cellular data and wifi set ups.

I used to have data/wifi issues all the time. Then like 10 years ago something was figured out that, data especially, isn’t an issue in big crowds anymore.

@MerchCzar

Was a blast of an ep. thanks!

Similar back stuff going on a tour stop

I am in the Memphis airport today and all of the different people that go into the brands/support mon-wed or maybe even instructors, are all in the airport.

Endless amounts of guys walking around with branded backpacks and roller bags

Stake and rope sounds like the most thankless awful job imaginable.

This episode was just awesome. Maybe cause I’m a project management guy, but this sounds stressful but like the dream job for getting into the golf space.

Hell yeah! Can’t wait to listen to this one, got to interact with Patrick a fair bit when we hosted the BMW at Wilmington CC in 2022. Wonder if I’ll recognize any other people being interviewed - will report back lol

Can confirm, stake and rope was just such a crummy job. We had one of our First Tee kids jump at the opportunity when it was presented to him, and by the end of the day, he was just thoroughly out of gas and regretting every minute of it. One of those things that you don’t really think about when you’re out at a tour event, but so many of those stakes are just driven by hand.

I spent a college summer tying fences for oil patches on the Permian Basin. Absolutely miserable work but I worked with a bunch of felons that were hilarious and taught 20 year old me a lot. Not good things, but things nonetheless.

Brought me back to my days in college athletics. Scale is different, but it’s incredible how these events get pulled together

What a fantastic episode. Great idea and great execution even with the travel issues.

Fascinating how ALL of it comes together. What an operator Patrick.

First of all, content of this episode rocked… truly great and the kind of deep dive I absolutely love that you guys do.

The sound in the intro was WAY TOO LOUD. I honest to god pulled the rental van I was driving off the road onto the shoulder because I thought something horrible had happened. Way louder than the trap draw gunshot ever was.

Really enjoyed this episode. My wife works in events management, and has done her whole career so she’s going to give it a listen too. Actually, she decided that’s what she wanted to do after attending corporate golf events with her dad in the States as a teenager and thought it always looked cool. Really need to get her out of the corporate banking world and onto DP World Tour or something so I can start tagging along.

Your man, Patrick sounds like a savant, and the beer at the end of an event like this must taste so good.

Fantastic episode, love this kinda stuff. Its unbelievable the amount of planning, coordination and effort that goes into running a tournament. Would love to see more peeks behind the curtain style content like this one
