The Inexplicable Survival of Jay Monahan

The last thing Augusta National wants to do is get deposed under oath. I hope that explains some of the players suspicions.

That’s fair. Morally, I despise the scary motherfuckers. I like to think I could be as cold as Michael Corleone and separate personal feelings from business, hence my comment that he should have taken the call. If I am being honest, in reality I would probably be more of a fuck up along the lines of Fredo.

Jay’s not as pathetic as Fredo, but he’s no Michael. And the PGA Tour probably could have used someone with a little more Michael in him and who had the vision to see the chess board and consider the long term implications of not being willing to even take the call.

Gotcha

How they want us to feel and be seen when we connect the dots:

How it really is when you realize it’s all a big club (and you ain’t in it!)

Kind of reminds me of Bettman and the NHL. Everyone hates him, except for the owners whose pockets he’s down a pretty good job lining

Change Bettman to Goodell or Silver and it’s the same picture.

Thank you - I learned a ton.

also found this interesting. could be my misunderstanding of what people have said for years, but I (mis?)remember Jay being touted as a Tour guy and internal promote to commissioner. Like he was the #2 to Finchem and just stepped in. Did not realize he was actually an external hire with former tour experience.

I remember him being with the Tour at some point, but I forgot that he came from Fenway Sports Group.

In my mind, I’ve had him as a guy that had previously been with the tour and then coming back as commish after Finches after having left and gone to work in finance.

I used to think Phil Mickelson was a kook for implying a web of conspiracies ran the PGA Tour

Me at several points in this article:

Phil has a long list of faults but recent history continues to treat him well IMO.

It’s like he’s saying the quiet part out loud, which I appreciate.

Xander might be next in line for this throne as he does it a little more subtly.

I don’t think Adam Silver attracts nearly the same level of universal animosity as Goodell or Bettman attract. Rob Manfred is getting close to their level.

Can’t remember where and i’m sure its also unsubstantiated, but saw someone say that Adam Silver is less available than Jay is. He speaks like once a year and it is only canned questions.

Fully agree

Just more of a they all suck situation.

Enjoyed the article.

“Near the end of Monahan’s press conference, he pivoted away from a question about whether he felt signature events were working and went on the offensive, listing off a series of changes the Tour has made that he wanted to be recognized as accomplishments — moving The Players Championship to March; negotiating with Netflix to have PGA Tour players participate in Full Swing; making gambling a normal, sanctioned part of the sport; forming an alliance with the DP World Tour; transitioning the business to a for-profit entity; creating the signature events series and dramatically increasing purse sizes. And he’s right, those moves do feel significant.”

Not one of the things he listed has done anything to increase my interest in watching PGA Tour events. That’s where Monahan is an epic failure. That should be what worries the players.

With all due respect, you spelled “Saudi Money” wrong. None of this “recent history” is the least bit possible without someone being willing to light more than a billion dollars on fire, in order to do something.

Maybe the Saudis are the benefactor Phil needed all along to start exposing the inner goings on behind the moat.

This is getting off topic but I would say “enter a business partnership with SSG and the PGA TURR” is definitely something.
