The Down Under thread - ANZAC adjacent

Only started listening a couple of days ago and already through all of the first 7! Absolutely loving listening to them, especially as an Irish ex-pat living here! Gonna get all my mates at home to listen to help convince them make the trek for a golf trip. Keep up the good work

Have loved listening to each of these episodes. I find it interesting that the genesis of the idea was clearly an international audience but it seems to be resonating with so many locals. Waiting for the next one to drop.

I already sort of posted this in the Melbourne thread, but my parents are leaving this evening after 3 months here, and so I’m having a weird day. Given the emotions that will happen at the airport in a few hours, offsetting this by getting the itinerary for @sliceroulette & I’s trip next week dialled in has made this Thursday an odd one. I am SO fucking pumped for this list… what a first proper golf trip.

Saturday - Arrive early arvo from Perth, meet up with my Kiwi brother from another mother; Brighton Muni to knock some rust off & have a beer or two.
Sunday - Yarra Yarra at 3:30pm after Club Championships (!) - shoutout @seskis :raised_hands:
Monday - RM East at 10:30am, then some twilight hijinks at Sandy Links
Tuesday - RM West at 2:00pm
Wednesday - Metropolitan at 9:44am then flying back to Perth.

If anyone is about and wants to meet up for a beer, let me/us know.
Cheers and craic ON.

Just had a quick look. Few things i’d be keen on but sizing is a tough scene… and i’m also heading to Melbourne on Saturday so all funds are getting funneled towards that

Checked in for flight already and have word that @sliceroulette is boots on the ground in Australia. Not much work getting done today…

(just like every other day tbf.)

Can we have a play update in the golfing Bledisloe challenge? @sliceroulette

Comfortable half time lead for @MG82 who absolutely snots his driver. I left my swing halfway across the Tasman so it’s been a truly tough scene for me! I have a brutal case of the shanks and have been leaning heavily on the ground game to get me home. Saving grace has been putting, which has been ok.

Yarra Yarra was a delight. RM East dished out a brutal beating. Bunkers on the latter are awful - like hitting off a cart path. Lots of rain recently but still…

RM East bunker drive by…

Roll Call - Melbourne golfers! - Community Center - No Laying Up

I think this is covered in one of the podcasts with @ScottW where it talks about how hard the sand is in the bunkers on the course from being trodden down over the years. It is amazing to watch the members who are used to it clip the ball out of those traps and keep it in play.

Can a Melburnian or sandbelt expert comment on the bunker issue at RM. Played the West a month ago and the bunkers weren’t what i was expecting - more dirt than sand.

Is that normal or a function of all the rain?

Looks like @wilbur.kay beat me to the punch!

I think Matt says it, anyone who is visiting for the first time should spend a good amount of time in a practice bunker, because they are definitely different to most places you will play out of the sand. Type of wedge you are using, bounce etc plays a big part in it too I believe.

Admittedly I haven’t been there for a couple of years, but they were always pretty bare back in the day.

@WhackDaddy agreed, and I think he threw in the fact that the practice bunkers get a dose of fresh sand more often than the course, so they are a little softer than the course just to mess with the visitors a little more!

It is a dirty secret that RM is a remarkable layout but of the top tier courses in Melbourne only average in conditioning. Metro is the standout.

There’s a reel on our Insta about it. Advice from Lukas Michel about how to prepare for it.

Australian Golf Passport Podcast shared a post on Instagram: "Sandbelt bunkers take some learning — @lukasmichel has seen the good (sometimes), the bad (often) & the ugly (regularly!) during a decade playing and caddying on the sandbelt. Shoutout...

So he says you need to get in there and work it out, but no advice on what the technique should be? Once you get the unknown technique, you’ve got it.

Kinda have to thump down with absolutely no regard for your own safety in a very unsafe environment.

Much nicer day on RM West - me and @MG82 played as a 2 which was great and meant we could dick around on the greens a bit as we had a 4 ahead. I’ve conceded the Bledisloe already haha.

Sandbelt’s a dreadful place to find yourself in the wilderness. Do not recommend. But what a walk, and we both had some memorable moments. Lovely to meet @tjosu and @bradjacko also; sort-of looking forward to/sort of dreading Metro tomorrow!
