Dates?
Excluding travel days will be on ground sep 23-30. Wish it was at least double that but weâll make the most of it one way or another!
Crucially, Iâm back from my trip by then, so we can get you out to NSW.
I feel unworthy but it would be an absolute honor to be on property!
Asking for advice from anyone in Perth / WA - iâm heading there in April and I have to return the hire car to perth airport, then get to Fremantle to get the ferry to Rottnest - besides a taxi, is there any other way? (first time to WA/Perth so have no idea if there is a train or skybus or another option) cheers!
@MG82 will sort this right out.
I also love that this thread is turning into a âAsk Me Anythingâ Australian edition.
One team, one dream
Gâday Ross.
What are your dates for being here & whatâs on the agenda?
There is a train that runs from the airport into the city, where youâll need to switch to a different train to Freo. Itâs going to take twice as long, so probably just easier to take a cab/Uber from the airport if youâre on a time schedule for the ferry.
Also be aware that the Domestic & International terminals are on opposite sides of the airport, so check where youâre returning the car to!
Link for more info but hit me up with any questions.
Much appreciated!
The missus and I are heading over for a holiday, into Perth, across to Wave Rock (cant remember the town) down to Albany, then back along the coast, Denmark, Marg River, Rottnest then Perth then home, over 13 nights. This will be my first time in WA and thought it would be good to do this bit, then another trip another time to go north towards Broome.
I thought the Taxi might be the easiest, and id like to get there early, i saw there is a museum at the dock that has the Australia II boat, id really like to see it as i had a model of it as a kid ![]()
Nice, thatâs a good little itinerary and amount of time. Hyden would be the place youâre most likely heading to, to see Wave Rock. Have heard mixed reviews of the rock itself but having never been there myself, donât know!
Albany, Denmark & Margs are all ace though, especially if you like your wine. Are you bringing your sticks? Albany is a must play if you can, even with some rentals, great course & superb value.
Which way are you going from Denmark to Margs btw? Would recommend the route through Walpole and Pemberton to see the big trees, but itâs all beautiful down that way.
If you want any winery recs, or I can help with anything else, just sing out.
we did look to head to Esperance, but thought it was that bit too far that would reduce margaret river - where we have 4 nights.
Iâm not bringing the sticks, but iâm not opposed to renting some for a hit if it comes up - we have 2 nights in Albany - and then going to aim for the big treeâs.
Iâve been recommended dining at Vasse Felix and Cullen, but more than happy to hear of anywhere else, we have 2 nights in Perth and would love to check out some nice places there!
Good call on Esperance. Again, not been there (yet) personally, but itâs just out of the way enough to make the Albany/Margs loop unfeasible IMO. Meant to be a beaut spot though, and is high on my list of places to get to for a visit and hopefully some golf.
Fitting in Albany GC in your two days might be tough, but again, I highly recommend it. Take public play on every day and $60 a round is a bargain IMO - Green Fees and Equipment Hire â Albany Golf Club
Other recs -
Albany
Earl of Spencer pub
Bred Co Bakery
ANZAC monument/lookout
The Gap/Natural bridge
Denmark
Singlefile, Rockcliffe and Harewood Estate wineries,
Refreshing swim at Greens Pool and Elephant Rocks,
Boston Brewing
The Dam
Margaret River
Vasse Felix & Cullen are very nice, defo do those.
LS Merchants, Si Vintners, Pierro, Windows Estate, Goon Tycoons, Cherubino all very good wineries, but you probably canât go wrong here. Voyager has beaut grounds/setting, too.
Wild Hop Brewing (up towards Yallingup) for some craft beers and a stellar lunch, Beerfarm also another good spot. Eagle Bay Brewing may have the best beer garden views going around.
Margaret River bakery is an institution.
Drift, Egberts or Sidekick for coffee in town.
Chows Table, Morries, White Elephant Cafe.
Boranup, Smiths Beach and Meelup for a swim, but head out to Prevelly/Gnarabup to watch the surfers, too.
On the off chance youâre stopping overnight in Pemberton between Denmark & Margs, Jaspers is the spot. Only 3 rooms (IIRC) but a sick whisky bar/restaurant right there and only about 20 yards to stumble home.
Righto, think thatâs all for now, haha.
Oh shit, forgot about Perth⌠might be something in that

Assuming youâre staying centrally, Northbridge area is the best for dinner/drinks, CBD is a snooze fest after work hours. Leadlight is my favourite pub close to town, but PICAbar also good. Sauma for Indian street/share food, Bivouac next door for middle-eastern, Fallow for woodfired food.
Absolutely spend some time nosing around Fremantle before/after you get the ferry to Rottnest. Havenât been over there for donkeys years and itâs been done up a fair bit so canât help you there.
This is awesome! do you work in for tourism WA? ![]()
Iâm going to copy all this to a word doc and print it out! things that jump out is Elephant rocks - that came up on Farcebook this morning so keen to see it. Prevelly is where the missus has booked us the air bnb.
Any idea roughly what the weather is like at the end of April? thats when we are heading over
Ha, I fucking wish! Those are mainly places weâve been lucky enough to visit, often multiple times with the wineries/breweries
I could happily while away my days sipping the latest Hazy Pale Ale at Wild Hop.
You should have a great spot in Prevelly, though I dare say youâll make a few trips into town for food/supplies, etc, Itâs only 10-15 mins or so though. Combi Coffee out that way is meant to be good, and hopefully youâll have a nice view in the evenings to sample the wares youâve procured during the day.
You should have pretty much perfect weather in late April, might be the best time of year to visit. Still warm enough during the day, but will start to get a touch of chill in the evenings down South. Youâre avoiding the absolute melt-fest that is Jan/Feb though.
Donât go on a yarra river cruise.
When in Melbourne head out to the Dandenong ranges - a sub-tropical rainforest about an hour drive from the CBD.
The Peninsula Hot springs are also good.
The Grampians are also close-ish to Melbourne and worth visiting.
Philip Island has incredible beaches and wildlife.
I also recommend Wilsonâs Promontory though it prob is a bit too far for a day trip.
If youâre in Melbourne over the summer, snorkel under the bay-side piers at Blairgowrie/Rye etc along the Mornington Peninsula - fantastic sea life.
Gage Road has a brewery next to where you get on/off the ferry to Rotto. Highly recommend it.
Plenty of great restaurants in Freo, some on the cappuccino strip have been there for 50+ years. Freo markets on Fri-Sun mornings are worth it for breakfast/ brunch. Of course the fishing boat harbour spots with Little Creatures Brewery may be the most famous of all with the Bon Scott statue as the epicentre.
I would ignore all of the cities to be honest. There are many, many more interesting and beautiful sites outside of the cities.
Give me Daylesford (Vic), Yallingup (WA), Port Macquarie / Nambucca Heads (NSW), Bright (Vic), Lakes Entrance (Vic), Robe (SA), Bridgeport (SA), Richmond (Tas) etc any day of the week.
Those bakeries which featured prominently on TS are in every country town in Oz.
(PS Sydney has more rain than Melbourne and is too humid.)
Imagine flying halfway around the world to go to Port Fucking Macquarie. I flew there from Sydney and was profoundly disappointed!
Port Mac >>> Sydney. No contest.
I feel like I need to see this place now! If for nothing else other than to settle the debate!
