The CLC Matchplay - Season 6 Knockout is here

Coastal NC pod had a day yesterday… 36 holes played at Wilmington Muni and Pine Valley.

In the AM at Muni @franklinorr and I went head to head while @JNorwoodFive causally enjoyed his first Muni experience. The match saw no tied holes until #9, several birdies, a chip in par net birdie winner and a lot of solid golf played. @franklinorr golfed his ball but I was lucky enough to card my low round of the year, closing him out 2 and 1 with a birdie on 17 and finishing with a -1, 70.

Shout out to old man Larry the absolute unit we got paired up with for the round and @JNorwoodFive for man handling Muni on his first go with a 78 from the tips!

The PM saw us head over to Pine Valley (again not that Pine Valley) where @JoeCostello joined up for a royal cluster of matches, with the results below:
@JoeCostello vs myself… I won 5&4
@JoeCostello vs @franklinorr@franklinorr won 1 up
@JNorwoodFive vs myself… @JNorwoodFive won 1 up

Afternoon highlights: @JoeCostello attempting every mega line and being possibly the fastest player I have ever seen just holding normal conversations mid swing its great. I continued to have a day on the links holing out for eagle on the 10th hole. @franklinorr grinding his tail off for 36 holes! @JNorwoodFive being an absolute KILLER and posting another great round of 81 for his first time at the valley, draining putts and getting up and down to go undefeated in our pod!

THE EVENT of the day however, was not related to our matches… it was finding out on the 17th tee box about someone getting angry, snapping their driver and then accidently dumping their cart in the ditch on another hole. So naturally like little school children, slightly intoxicated middle aged school children we had to take a look. Y’all can scroll up to see what we found! The best part was prior to the round the guis were yelled at to tuck their shirts in and I explained that you could literally dump a cart in a pond and no one would care but if you had an untucked shirt you were in trouble.

I consumed many beers yesterday so going to leave it up to the others to fill in any of their personal highlights!

If 2 people are tied for 1st in a pod, is the tie breaker differential or their head to head match?

Hmmm. Let’s cross that bridge if / when we come to it, but head to head sounds like the way it should be to me.

Excellent write up @AirMailWedges!! Captured everything that really needed to be captured. Very thankful for an absolute awesome day with great people. Muni Larry was a treat to watch for 9 holes. How the day ended at PV was amazing and the awesome Costello photo will be a lasting memory. And yeah the golf was great. Some amazing shots, chip ins, @AirMailWedges almost shooting 69 while not hardly hitting any fairways was incredible, @JoeCostello Mega Lines, @franklinorr unbridled energy and positivity and so so much more. The camaraderie was the best part though. Can’t wait for the coastal pod to meetup again. Hate to tell you but our POD is better than yours…

Pod F played another match today at Forest Oaks County club. I took on @bigcheese with Rob giving me 8 shots. It was a hot and humid day but Rob and I both walked the entire course and had a great time doing it.
The first hole ended up being a preview of the day. I missed the fairway left and Rob was in the middle. I had to scramble my butt off and sink a 10 footer for bogey while Rob missed a 5 footer. Hole was halved.
Hole 2 saw me miss the fairway again but hit a nice recovery to have a 2 putt par net bird to take an early lead.
Hole 3 I had a natural bird with a really nice 5 hybrid to to 15 feet on the par 3. Up 2
Hole 4, another missed fairway, another scramble par net bird to go 3 up.
Hole 5 I actually hit a fairway and green and had a 2 putt par to go 4 up.
Rob didn’t let the run get to him and but I wasn’t letting up. We halved 6, 7, 8 and 9 to turn at 4 up.
Hole 10 I missed way right but had a gap. I hit an 8 iron from out of the rough under the near tree and over the far tree to leave myself on the front of the green 30 ft short. 2 putt par was enough to go 5 up.
Hole 11 Rob lost his drive and I was able to coast with a net par to go 6 up.
I was feeling good with a drive down the middle on 12 but I lost my approach left. A really nice chip to 2 feet gave me a par net bird to close the match 7 and 6.
It was a great round and Forest Oaks is in really good shape. Thanks to Rob for the match. I just had it today for some reason. I ended up with an 83, net 64 which was my best round in 2 years by 5 strokes.

Mark and I were rained out at Oak Hills in Columbia today. Because of our schedules we will not be able to reschedule so we declared the match a draw. I guess this means I win the pod.

@EFreeCHS and @BarnacleRob your match will determine second place in the Pod so you may want to discuss a tiebreaker before you tee off

75% of Pod G returned to the site of the 2021 Helicopter Cup today, Bryan Park Champions course. @Fluff, Chris Armstrong (not on the ‘fuge) and I played matches while @DSimpson kept us company.

I was getting three strokes off of Chris and eight off of Fluff, and I needed every single one of them. Chris made more putts today than I think I’ve ever seen. If I had to guess, he was probably in the 100’ feet of total putts made. Fluff golfed his ball, as he typically does, making a couple of heroic pars and a ridiculous birdie on 10 (courtesy of a majestic 240 yd second shot with @AirMailWedges’ Silk Road gift). Im guessing he shot 75 or so, which is well below his #LCP standards.

I was late to the course, had to reassemble my driver and 3-wood in the parking lot, not having touched a club since the Peoria Strapped redux a few weeks ago. I shot a smooth 46 on the front with two doubles and a triple, yet found myself only down one in both matches. For what it’s worth, Drew played spectacularly on the front nine.

I had to go to the car to get a fully charged speaker at the turn, and dare I say, that was the turning point. I made par on 10, birdie on 11, par on 12, and I was right back in it. Doubled 13 because I hate that effing hole. Then made a sandy par on the 234 yd par 3 14th. I finished bogey, par, par, bogey with a wobbly two-putt on 18 to shoot 39 on the back and close it out at 2up on both matches at the end.

Chris defeated Fluff 3 and 2 today, due in large part to the aforementioned 100’ of putts made.

I think the standings for Pod G look like this:
Rdugolfer 2-0-0 6pts with 1 match to play
Chris 1-1-0 3pts with 1 match to play
@DumpyFlow89 0-1-0 0pts with 2 matches to play
Fluff 1-2-0 3pts with 0 matches to play

You guis let me know if I messed anything up here, I’m new at this.

But what was on the playlist though?

Kaleo, Chris Stapleton, other randomness. Vibes were flowing, for me at least.

@Fluff is trying to make me regret giving him that 3 iron. It did need a good home tho.

Hit it twice yesterday on 10 and 14. Bullets both times

Pod D (for “Delayed”) has gotten of to a slow start thus far, with only one match to date. I will let @GWB15 and @pmgolf123 tell that tale.

That changes starting today! In a whirlwind of side chat activity, the schedule has been mostly set!

FRI, 7/30 - @JohnP heads into a neutral site tilt vs. @Smidler, @needforspieth and @Pingman14 will be there to spectate / officiate / search for lost balls.
SAT, 7/31 - JohnP will be taking his talents westward to Goodyear vs pmgolf123
SUN, 8/1 - GWB15 and Smidler will be launching at Belmont Lake in Rocky Mount. This may turn into a classic 2 on 1 vs Smidler, if pmglf123 can make the schedule work*
Finally, SUN, 8/7 - GWB15 will make the trek to Goodyear to take on JohnP and hope that John’s preview round from the week before doesn’t give him too much of an edge.

*If he cannot make this time, we have a spot open to anyone who wants to join. We may be able to snag the 4 spot that day regardless if there is interest.

Also, I am now accepting the spiritual support of all those who love MidPines or hate UVA. Say a prayer, light a candle, whatever you feel is best.

@GWB15 was kind enough to lay down and allow me a 6 and 5 win on 7/17. Neither of our had our best day at Hyland Golf Club, but the course was looking pretty solid.

@Smidler closed me out on 14

I suck at golf, that’s the recap.

A few more bourbons and I’ll throw some sandbagging allegations in here for @anon47037505 amusement
