The QCH prides itself on playing real golf. Disappointing to see @tdaly moving along despite a very obvious rules violation. If he had any honor at all, he would rightly forfeit and @Jrams9207 should be moving on. TBH, the QCH tournament committee will be evaluating Mr. Dalys membership status, a full report will be issued*

Cc @Deven75

*there will be no report

My opponent and I agreed to terms of how to handle the situation as we played it.

Reading is hard.

I know we’re having fun online, but if this is a problem I have no issue backing out.

On to the Round of 16 - For those who are still in it, make sure to mark off your calendars 10/15 in the southern pines region, thats where the final 4 will be going down! More details to come later. Here is the tracker for any who want to check it out: 2022 CLC Matchplay Tracker - Google Sheets

(And yes, I am just going to ignore the rules controversy above and trust the opponents handled it)

Moving forward would be good to let people know before hand where your match is going on, when, and to have an unbiased third party along for the ride. Stuff is getting serious.

Also make sure you agree upon a tiebreaker before hand, no more .5 hole advantage going in!

With that being said here our the matchups:
@tdaly vs @anon29849602
@BushwoodCaddie vs @tigergolftraveler

@Hawk vs @LukeBoatright
@BrooklynAJ vs @Fluff

The matches are expected to be done by September 18th.

Got the Sweet 16 rolling on Tuesday. Taking on @Fluff at Pinehurst #4. Fluff played the blues, I played the whites, meaning the low capper was giving me 7 strokes.

Some might call that scummy, but I prefer to think of it as strategically scummy.

We were joined by @Swing_hard_and_hope and @arydolphin, an all-class trio to walk with in my last round as a PH resident.

Off we go…

Hole 1
Par four, dog leg right, around a set of big fairway bunkers. Fluff POUNDS driver over the dogleg, position A. I tug the drive slightly, fairway left, a little longer in, then proceed to thin a 7 iron through the green. Fluff’s wedge goes a little deep. Two putt par. I chip to six feet, miss the par putt, but my pop keeps it level.
All square

Hole 2
Par 5, shortish, downhill. Fluff flares a drive to the right trees, I tug a liner to the left waste area. Fluff punches out, then hits a strong approach to 8 feet. I thin it (AGAIN) into the left fairway bunker, hit a wedge long of the green. Chip up, two putt for six. Fluff two putts for par. First blood.
Fluff 1 up

Hole 3
Par four, dogleg left, around fairway bunkers.
Fluff takes the aggressive line over the bunkers. I hit a solid one to the right side of the fairway. Another skully one (3 for 3), but it rolls to tback of the green. Fluff hits a great wedge to four feet. I manage a two putt, Fluff’s bird slides by, and I escape.
Fluff 1 up

Hole 4
Short par 3, 130 yards, green on top of a ridge with steep disaster right.
Fluff puts his to about 20 feet left and above the hole, I’m short of the green in line with the flag. I putt up to about six feet. Fluff has curler down the hill, dead center all the way for the deuce. I made the par putt, but it is irrelevant.
Fluff 2 up

Hole 5
Long par 4, over a ridge, and up a hill. False front green. I pop.
Both in the fair way, both with mid to long irons in. Fluff hits his second to left front fringe, I flail a 6I to the right greenside bunker. Fluff’s first putt is a little short, and makes the second. Par I hit a decent bunker shot to 15 feet, then blow the putt by about 8 feet. Sloppy. Miss the comebacker, for a net bogey. Gave that one away.
Fluff 3 up

Hole 6
Par 3, death sand right, bumpy short grass left.
Fluff winds up in the swale left, I hit ANOTHER thin one, but it runs onto the green. Fluff’s putt creeps onto the green, but he’s got 18 feet for par. Snugs it up for tap in bogey. I proceed to dumbass my birdie putt 6 feet by, and miss the comebacker to give another one away.
Fluff 3 up

Hole 7
Par four dogleg right. This was not particularly pretty.
Both flared drives right to the waste / long grass. I hack a 6 iron to a green side bunker, Fluff pulls it from long grass left and long of the green. I lose all concentration and take about 5 from the bunker before conceding. I believe Fluff made bogey. The wheels have fallen off.
Fluff 4 up

Hole 8
Big gross bunker through fairway.
Fluff is in the right trees, I’m in the left trees, we both find the greenside bunker in two.
Both hit good bunker shots, I drain my 5 footer, Fluff misses from a bit shorter, and what do you know, I won a hole!
Fluff 3 up

Hole 9
Shortish par 5, hell’s half acre style bunker bisects the fairway. I pop.
Both drives right. I’m up near a tree, have to hope-punch a 5I across the waste bunker, hitting the tree on the follow through. Managed to pull it off. Fluff hammers an approach to near pin high right. I hit a tasty, spinny wedge to six feet. Fluff’s pitch runs to about 15 feet. Both two putt from there, my stroke takes it. Is this what good golf feels like?
Fluff 2 up

Hole 10
Dog leg right, par four, I pop again.
Both hit good drives, I have 9I, Fluff prob has pitching wedge. I hit a decent one, 15 feet above the hole long. Fluff hits a tasty wedge to 4 feet, with a little spin back. I cozy my putt to tap in range, net 3. Fluff’s shorty slides by.
Fluff 1 up

Hole 11
Shortish par 3, 130 yards for me from the whites, prob 145 for Fluff.
He comes up a bit short of the green. I hit a good one pin high, 20 feet. Fluff’s chip is a little short, and he misses the 15 footer. I hit a shite first putt but clean up the 5 footer for the par win. Things have turned around…
All square

Hole 12
Par four, curling around a fairway waste area to a wild sloping green, with a deep thumbprint bowl int he front.
…Not so fast my friend!
Fluff pounds a draw around the bunker, I hit a good one to right fairway. The thins return though, and my 9I skips through the green, down a steep ledge long. Fluff’s wedge is again tasty, probably 5 feet. I hit a good chip, but Fluff drains his. I made a nice par putt, but no use.
Fluff 1 up

Hole 13
Longer par 5, around the pond at the low point of the course.
Fluff murders a drive, dead center. I hit a good one as well, dead center but not as long. I hit a good 5I layup to about 50 yards. Fluff pounds one pin high, 20 feet, on the green, majestic. I hit a good wedge to about 6 feet. Fluff hits a good putt, just doesn’t curl in, conceded bird. My birdie putt just rims in on the right side. Haymakers here, but no blood
Fluff 1 up

Hole 14
Par 3, super long for Fluff from the blues, about 170 for me, water all down the left. Tough hole.
Fluff hits a good shot, maybe a club short, about 22 feet away. I hit a good 7I to the same area, call it 23 feet away. I hit a decent put, Fluff concedes par. Fluff’s putt rolls out to 3 feet, and given the state of the match I made him putt it. No issues, halved.
Fluff 1 up

Hole 15
Shorter par 4, dogleg right around a tree to a truly wild and undulating green.
Fluff pushes his drive right, in the trees and waste area. I snap hook one left, possibly OB, then hit a perfect provisional around the tree, long, fairway. Wouldn’t you know it. I find my first, punch a 7 iron off a downhill lie, under a tree branch, and into the fairway. Fluff hits a great shot onto the green from trouble. I have 60 yards, and hit another thin one - through the green, bunker. Decent bunker shot rolls out to 12 feet. Fluff putts to close range, I miss my bogey putt and concede.
Fluff 2 up

Hole 16
Reachable par 4, with yet another wild green.
Fluff pounds one but too much draw takes it left of the green. Ends up in bunker, 40-50 yards out. I hit a decent one, fades slightly short and right of the green. Fluff’s bunkers shot catches too much ball, flies the green, ends up near a tree trunk. I chip mine to 20 feet. After much deliberation, Fluff hits a tasty, awkward chip from the pinestraw to 12 feet. I hit a good putt, but doesn’t fall, tap in par. Fluff misses his par putt. We got action again.
Fluff 1 up

Hole 17
Long par 5, down the hill, one of the prettiest holes ever, framed by fairway bunkers and waste areas.
Both hit ok drives, ending within a few yards of each other on the left side of the fairway. Fluff’s second finds the fairway left, over a bunker. I find fairway right, near the long grass but fine. Fluff has 60 yards, I have 85. Tweener distance for me, I opt for a hard sand wedge which is a big mistake, I shank think it into a bunker. Tweener distance for Fluff as well, but he hits a great pitch inside of 10 feet. My bunker shot is long, know I need to make the 40 footer to have a chance, it slides by. No matter - Fluff’s birdie putt is perfect, and that’s the match.
Fluff wins 2 & 1

Alas, my run is over. It was great fun to win last year, and to keep it going this year, but @fluff had too much firepower for me to handle.

To cap it off, he hit a great drive and a 6 iron to 6 feet on 18 and drained that sucker too. So that was four birdies in the last 7, which will get it done just about every time. Capt Fluff had 5 total on the day, shot even par from the blues on #4, which is a hell of a round. No shame in losing to that.

All in all, it was a great match - lots of action, lots of good shots, some haymakers, a mid-round comeback, and a classy closing of the door.

There was so much respecting the game. I hate to see our champion @BrooklynAJ go down, but it was against such a formidable opponent in @Fluff that he deserves all the credit.
