Group P had a few matches today. I was excited to get out to Furman, probably the best public in the greenville area. Showed up and the weather was under 90 C, parking lot wasn’t full, and then we found out why…punched greens. I can barely read grain, I’m worse reading sand. Still a wonderful day to walk 18. @charlestondawg had a great front 9 but could quite hang on as @FUwolfpacker took the last hole and the match. I squeaked due to handicaps so @FUwolfpacker and I are onto the next round.

Really glad I got the chance to meet both @tres_carlos and @charlestondawg. Great guis. Thanks for setting this up @Swing_hard_and_hope

Echo all of this. @tres_carlos and @charlestondawg were both great. Would play with either of them anytime! Congrats to the Sausage King @abefroman for going a perfect 3-0 in group P!

@Swing_hard_and_hope , pod F is done. @Blackngold35 beat @bigcheese 6 and 5 today at Tanglewood champions. I was just the witness.
@miketerps08 had to WD due to a family issue so that leaves me at 3-0, BnG at 2-1, Bigcheese at 1-2 and Mike 0-3.

Group O concluded today with EFreeCHS defeating BarnacleRob 7&6 out at Stono Ferry.

Sounds like fun!!

Group J finished up yesterday with a 3 way match at Mimosa Hills.

@RPruitt regrettably couldn’t make it due to work commitments, so I believe @cltgamecock and I receive points for the unplayed matches.

I beat @cltgamecock 6&5
@cltgamecock beat @PowerFadez 1up

@PowerFadez had previously beaten @RPruitt and I giving him 2 wins. He also has one loss against Ryan.

I have 1 win against @cltgamecock, one no contest against @RPruitt, and one loss against @PowerFadez

@cltgamecock has 1 win against @PowerFadez, 1 no contest against Ross, and 1 loss against me.

Ross had 1 loss to Isaac and the rest were no contest.

I believe this leaves @PowerFadez in 1st, myself and @cltgamecock tied for 2nd. I believe on tiebreakers I would take the 2nd spot, but we are looking for confirmation from the commissioner @Swing_hard_and_hope

Doesn’t look like I’m going to get my 3rd match in. @DumpyFlow89 took a new job a few weeks ago and I’ve been outta town a bunch. Guessing we’re calling that a draw, each getting a point. He also still needs to play Chris, but I don’t think that’s happening today. So unless something changes today, the final standings for pod G are:
@RDUgolfer 2-0-1
Chris Armstrong 1-1-1
@DumpyFlow89 0-1-2
@Fluff 1-2-0

Sounds right to me, @bmasters takes the second spot on differential / head to head with @cltgamecock

@Swing_hard_and_hope vs @ColoniusFunk - 8/7 - 2:30PM - Tobacco Road
Another hot and humid matchplay day. Why do I do this to myself? I am going to keep this brief because I have spent enough time writing for the knockout stages, but wanted to do my last match justice. I was so glad to finally be able to tee it up with @ColoniusFunk (we live about 2 miles from each other and have never played together) and we got @yungbunzz as a witness. The company did not disappoint, but my golf game certainly did.

I have played Tobacco Road a lot, (30ish times in my 3 years in the area) so was looking forward to this one. I have determined that the key is feeling nice about your tee ball and being aggressive where needed. On the range I was pumped because the driver swings felt great. Narrator: That did not continue.

To set the stage I was giving up 10 strokes and played from 1 tee back to make sure it was only 10 and not 12.

Hole 1 - Drives to about the same spot in the fairway, a topped 5 wood later par for me, bogey for @ColoniusFunk . Tied

Hole 2 - First time I have not cleared the junk with a drive, @ColoniusFunk was way left over by the third tee tree, a lipped out 3 footer later we both leave with bogeys. Tied

Hole 3 - Still no fireworks, I was in the left waste area, C was in the right. Neither get it up and down, but I take the hole. 1UP

Hole 4 - Neither of us had a good enough drive to be able to go for the green in 2, which is a shame on a big birdie hole. Both made the green in 3 and 2 putt par, but C was popping. TIED

Hole 5 - Classy layup by C, terrible attempt for the green left me 50 yards short in the waste area. After a bad approach by both of us and unsuccessful up and downs we pushed with some bogeys. TIED

Hole 6 - After the tee shots I was already thinking about taking a lead with 3 straight popping holes for C. He hit one real thin straight into the waste area short. Well the fireworks started popping here, C chipped in for the first birdie of the day and the match was on! 1DN

Hole 7 - A smooth driving iron down the middle had me feeling confident a par would get it done. C missed right and honestly I didn’t even see how it got where it did, but I know he had 215+ (he can chime in with exact number) to the green. It’s a tough carry. So I went to my ball and prepped. He was back there with @yungbunzz so I didn’t know which found the green, but I know one of them hit an AMAZING shot. Well it was @ColoniusFunk . 2 putt for one hell of a 4 to make my nice up and down off the back left collection are not matter. 2 DN

Hole 8 - Long left was not good with the back right pin, great bogey for me meant nothing with the stud up and down by C while popping. 3DN

Hole 9 - I mean another hole of a weak showing by me that resulted in a bogey. But a double out of C to show he was human with the 10 strokes he was getting. 40 by me on the front. 41 by C, which is not good when you are giving up 5 a side. 3DN

Hole 10 - A big tee ball was lost right by me, double for me. A smooth FIR, GIR par for C. 4DN

Hole 11 - This is where I start pressing a little too hard and became a big dumb idiot. I hit a solid tee ball, 8 iron left in on the par 5 was left right of the green in the pine straw. C lost his tee ball right and ended up with a double. A concession left me to steal one. 3DN

Hole 12 - The sadness continues. A decent tee ball found the waste area left, but only 80 yards left. Colin took a drop but hit a great shot onto the green. I left my approach in the bunker like the aforementioned “big dumb idiot” I am. Matching bogeys. 3DN

Hole 13 - He is stroking so I felt I needed to press, went for the mega line and got rejected hard because the driver was booty all day. So the rest of the story sucks, we pillow fight the par 5 and he takes the hole while stroking. 4DN

Hole 14 - The wheels had come fully off here. I pull one left, he dumps one in the water. Bogey for me, double for C, we push. 4DN

Hole 15 - We finally look like golfers, great tee balls, put 2 shots to 15 feet, neither make the putt and get some tap in pars to close out the match. @ColoniusFunk wins 4&3.

Only for my honor I want to mention I finished birdie, birdie, par on 16,17, and 18 to close out after the match was over. Congratulations to @ColoniusFunk on moving on and myself for the SUPER quick exit going 0-2-1 on the matchplay I set up.

@yungbunzz and @ColoniusFunk feel free to add in anything I missed!

We started with 64…. Only 32 are worthy enough to have moved on to the Knockout Rounds.

Alright folks, we have made it through the Group Stages. Thanks to all of you who went out and made these matches happen, it was truly special to see this all come together and have so many matches played across the Carolinas (and even a couple VA sneak ins). 144 matches in 6 weeks after spending just a couple days throwing this thing together, that is really freaking cool.

With that being said, 32 more big matches to go until we crown a champion. I want to remind everyone of how the next rounds will advance plus I made some changes (mainly to extend by a week for each stage to give folks more time). This is going to get a lot harder to make matches happen as we move along with the location of some folks, so bear with me and your fellow competitors. If there are any questions or issues just let me know and we can work it out.

Dates / Details

Round of 32

  • August 9 - August 29
  • You will have 3 weeks to play your match, if not the higher seed will advance.

Round of 16

  • August 30 - September 20th
  • You will have 3 weeks to play your match, if not work with the commish to determine who will advance (please don’t let it come to that).

Elite 8

  • September 21 - October 14th
  • You will have a little over 3 weeks to play your match, if not work with the commish to determine who will advance (please don’t let it come to that).

Final 4

  • Hosted for a 36 hole matchplay day at Forest Creek Golf Club, this will be on either 10/15, 10/16, or 10/17 based on availability of the 4 competitors and our host, @Cody. Mark off your calendars if you think you might be making it there!

The Play

  • Full handicaps will be used
  • Competitors can choose which tee they would like to play from during competition, but we all know it makes it a little better if both competitors play from the same tee
  • An 18 hole match is suggested, but if needed for time purposes and agreed on by both competitors a 9 hole match will be allowed.

The Points

Knockout Stage

  • In the round of 32 those who won their pod will only face competitors who finished second in their pod to advance. The pod winners will start with a .5 hole lead on the day. This means that if the day ends in a tie, or the match is not able to be scheduled in the timeframe the higher seed will advance.
  • The round of 16, Elite 8, and Final 4 will no longer give competitors an advantage and will be a simple 18 hole match to determine the winner. This can not end in a tie, but is on the competitors to determine their “tiebreak” before the round. If you can not make your match happen in the 3 weeks we will work together to come up with a plan.
