The 2nd Annual DBL DBL - Soule Park | Feb 28 & Mar 1, 2025

Time to run it back!

Reservations have officially been made at Soule Park Golf Course in Ojai, CA on Feb 28th & Mar 1st, 2025 for the 2nd Annual DBL DBL Invitational.

Take a chance at being crowned an official Scottish Lord or Lady and take home the DBL DBL Challenge Belt for the year. Keep in mind, this is way more about the hang than it is about the golf.

Tee times have officially been locked down for up to 36 attendees, with the following details:

When: Friday and Saturday, February 28th and March 1st, 2025
Where: Soule Park Golf Course – Ojai, CA
There is plenty out there on Soule Park. It’s a William F. Bell design, renovated by Gil Hanse in 2005.
https://www.soulepark.com/ / https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bG-zHgb9XCA
Time: Tee times begin at 9:30am both days (9 minute intervals)
Cost: TBD. I have been quoted $144 for both rounds total, including green fees, cart, and range balls but expect it to be a touch higher to cover the costs of prizes (probably in the $155-$170 range). I will request payment about 30-45 days before the event (I will post those details once I’m ready to start collecting; Soule Park expects one payment for the group so you won’t be able to pay the green fee to the course directly).

Format : Quota Net – Full Handicap (Gross Double Bogies and Worse=0pts, Bogies=1pt, Pars=2pts, Birdies=4pts, Eagles=8pts; you are highly encouraged to pick up once you reach double bogey if you are potentially holding up play).

Prizes : Winner - The Gold Medal, retention of The DBL-DBL Champions Belt until the playing of the following DBL DBL, and the Official Scottish Title of “Lord” or “Lady”
Runner-Up - The Silver Medal
3rd Place - The Bronze Medal

Lodging/Food: Attendees will be responsible for these on their own dime. Last year most of us stayed at Casa Ojai Inn which was roughly $200-250/night for a room. I’m most likely going to stay there again. There are Marriott/Hilton options down in the Ventura/Oxnard area in the $150-200/night range. Just keep in mind the road up to Ojai from Ventura isn’t big and has a winding, unlit stretch to it. My hope is to have as many people stay in the Ojai area as possible to avoid the inherent risks of driving at night in an unfamiliar area for many of you. Ojai can be pricey but there should be a couple options on AirBnb or at local hotels that are doable for most financially. I will leave the lodging decision to each of you individually.

Casa Ojai Inn

Casa Ojai Inn - a Eco Friendly Ojai Hotel with great reviews!

Walking/Riding: Soule Park is very walkable (some elevation changes but not too wild) and is acceptable if you choose. But please know that you will be expected to keep pace with the group in front of you whether you walk or ride. So, think very hard about that when making that decision. Push carts are available on a first-come, first-serve basis (they have a decent amount). I will be a pace of play fascist, so don’t make me send you to the gulag.

Travel: For those potentially flying in for the event, I recommend LAX, Burbank (BUR), or Santa Barbara (SBA). With no traffic Ojai is a one and a half hour drive from LAX, roughly one hour and fifteen minutes from BUR, and about 1 hour from Santa Barbara Airport. Plan on 2-2.5 hours for the commute to set the expectation properly if you are driving from LAX at rush hour. BUR can be faster if there is heavy traffic on the 405 out of LAX. Please make arrangements understanding that the greater Los Angeles area is a VERY congested area of the world and can be a nightmare with traffic. There is no guarantee that traffic from Burbank will be smooth either. I highly suggest arriving on Thursday, Feb 27th if you are flying to give yourself the peace of mind in allowing yourself less stress in commuting to the Ojai area. I cannot stress this enough, if you choose to try to fly in early Friday morning to either airport with the idea that you will make your tee time, I can almost 100% guarantee you that you will not make your time. Plan accordingly.

There will be a dinner after Round 1 again. It isn’t mandatory (but highly encouraged) and would be on your own dime. Last year we held it at Zaidee’s at Soule Park to mixed reviews. I may have it there again out of ease. But I will consult with our Defending Champion, Lord @chefcycle as the previous winner will have input in the decision.

!!!VERY IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ!!!

The signup sheet is below. This is an “Invitational” that will be open to all. However, there will be preference shown to all 1st year attendees and anyone that frequents the Monday Night Zoom on the Refuge. If you attended last year I have already signed you up to reserve your spot. If you can’t make it this coming year, please let me know and I will pull you off the list. Just know that all 1st year attendees are forever exempt into the event. So, if you can’t make it in 2025, you are still welcome in following years.

!!!Also, any OPE attendees!!!… if you have participated in the Ope and don’t frequent the Monday Zoom, I am keen to give you preferential treatment as well. Reach out in the DM’s if that describes you and you are interested in playing.

If you are NOT someone that has attended the Monday Night Zoom or an attendee of the 1st DBL DBL, please sign up in the “Regular Sign-Up” section in Sheets dedicated to that below the Monday Zoom Sign-Up area. Last year I had plenty of spots available for anyone interested.

If I see a Refuge handle in the Monday Zoom section that I don’t recognize, I WILL BUMP that name to the Regular Sign-Up. Please help me by signing up in the appropriate area.

PLEASE REMEMBER, this is NOT an NLU run event. I am the Czar/King of this thing and will curate it to what I see fit. I’m happy to have anyone join us for the event, even if you’re “on my list”.

SORRY FOR THE LONG POST. Just wanted to get as much info down as possible.

Blocking off my calendar now for DBL DBL DBL.

Casa Ojai Inn was a fine lodging option and a good value, though the wife gave me some major side eye when I told her very late in the game that it was not the Ojai Valley Inn . Oops!

I know. I’m sorry Tiger! It’s the only time of the year I can make it work where I am not competing with a multitude of other events.
