I assure you kids are dumb enough that they absolutely still do this.

Just a few weeks ago we had some of our sons friends over and (it’s a long story that you don’t need all the details of) but it came up that a girl in their school has spent years telling everyone her dad is attorney Sweet James, who is a very well known accident attorney in California and Arizona thanks to his ubiquitous advertising. It goes without saying that this man is very much not her father or relation in any way.

Am I to understand that members of this here human race actually believe Metallica makes better music than AC/DC?

Yes

Edit: More than one great Metallica closer entrance also, just didn’t happen often enough to be remembered as much as Mo or Hoffman.

The whole Brockmire scene in the latest episode had me dying. Neil being so sincere in the questions and listening. Easily the hardest I’ve laughed in any of the strapped episodes. Good work Jason and DJ.

It’s actually a really good match up. AC/DC has the edge with total worldwide album sales, 130 to 106 million. They definitely have a more broad appeal while I would argue Metallica had a higher artistic ceiling with Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. Sadly (for me) ‘tallica went a different direction in the ‘90s, which Cliff never would have allowed btw, but that led to their mainstream popularity and generated millions of metal fans.

I hear all of that. But then I hear the music. With my ears. AC/DC is perennially slept on - PMT actually had an unscripted segment on exactly that.

My bad.

Not meant to be snarky towards you. I can appreciate your point about their artistic journey. I’m just dumbfounded by the hype they get. Gotta be the #1 sticker on the back window of the truck, other than maybe Fox Racing.

Metal is a lifestyle, man, and its followers tend to be really devout. Metallica is probably the biggest common thread across the genre.

They’ve got 4 songs with 1 BILLION streams on Spotify, and nearly 30 million monthly listeners, no one is sleeping on AC/DC.

They play an extremely mainstream style of 70s and 80s rock that has endured, and soundtracked an entire Marvel movie (Iron Man 2). It doesn’t get more awake than that.

All fair points. Slept on was the wrong phrase to use. Point I was going for is they don’t always get mentioned among the great classic rock bands (and the fact that Metallica might chaps me). Perhaps not being American or British (invasion) affects that. The video I linked above was all about how they’ve basically been a cross-generational hype machine, which goes to your point about the choice to use them in Iron Man. Could also be a nit I’m picking about my generation, many of whom only appreciate Thunderstruck as a drinking game.

So stupid that the A’s are leaving Oakland

My reaction to anyone who would categorize Metallica as classic rock:

Their stuff on Load and Reload is rock but it’s also the lowest point in the band’s history (non St. Anger division, which stands alone) - no offense to anyone, and those albums sold a ton, but they hardly play any of those songs live now. AC/DC is definitely in the classic rock pantheon, no questions asked. Metallica is more niche even though they also have a huge worldwide following.

Recently played golf with someone who didn’t recognize the version of “Turn the Page” I was playing (Seger) and thought it was a cool live cover of Metallica’s song. Considered ending it all that day.

Oof. Similar story…had someone tell me years ago it was cool of RunDMC to let Aerosmith do that song with them.

I was a little slow getting to this episode, but man what a great one. Benetti is an all-time great guest/sherpa, and I really enjoyed the boys just soaking in the day at the ballpark.

I’m stunned no one else appears to have mentioned this yet - this might be the most “meta” episode of Strapped yet. Am I the only one that was definitely thinking of a certain group of 5 dudes that started out talking about golf several years ago when @Randy got all philosophical with this quote about watching baseball and getting to know the announcers?

I think for the people that like it, it just becomes part of your daily ritual, and that’s where the broadcasters play such a big part…you know, it’s like a daily podcast almost, right? It’s one of those things where you probably won’t, the first time you do it, you’d be like “eh…uh…yeah, you know”. But you make yourself keep doing it a few times, and you’ll start to meet those broadcasters…and you’ll get their humor, and you know I think that’s where it really builds. It’s like any good sports talk show.

Of course, @MerchCzar responds with an unconvinced “Sure”.

But I thought it was right on point, and I couldn’t help but think of the NLU crew and how at this point I listen as much for the personalities, running jokes, and senses of humor of each of them as much as I do for the golf takes. Later, when talking about the TV booth, Randy adds more on this point:

It’s voices you hear…5,6,7 times a week. And, you know, you’re sitting in your living room, you’re sitting on your deck, you’re sitting in your car…they go places with you. And they become familiar, and you get a sense of their humor and you start to get inside jokes, and it really builds a strong relationship.

Again, for me at least squarely hits home about NLU. (Shotgun Start as well - those guys may even fit the baseball announcer description even more squarely with some of their wonderful tangents and off-topic rants…akin to a great baseball announcing duo during a blowout)

To the point some have made about less golf in this season - sure, there wasn’t as much golf as past seasons, but to me it was just as enjoyable. Strapped is about friendship and exploration, and I think as long as Neil, Randy, and DJ keep having fun no matter where they go, I’m going to keep watching. While golf may have been the hook at the beginning, it shouldn’t be a limitation.

Having said that though, I am a little glad Neil didn’t get the mega (micro?) bonus at the mini golf course. It just wouldn’t have been the same, and I don’t even think the C-Suite conversation afterwards would have been entertaining. It’ll be more fun when it happens at a true golf course. And for the record, it can even be a par 65 or whatever - just as long as it’s a real golf course.

Thanks again fellas - can’t wait for the next one whenever it comes!!

Spot on. I had a similar thought in the SGS thread a while back:

My cousin told another kid on a roller coaster that we were Vanilla Ice’s nephews. Your story is better.
