Yeah a legit awful decision. As someone who is forced to hit a lot of punch shots, I would’ve gone 8 or 9 iron there.
He said he thought a 6 iron was too much loft. In what world do you get too much loft on a chipped 6 iron? It’s not even gonna get above your knees. Even if he caught the 4 iron clean, it would’ve gone straight into the ground.
This is great ! I just rewatched South Carolina and needed to add this screenshot in from Randy’s comment about the shirt. You too look like a dad who is trying to party!
A polarising change in direction that may alienate some of its most loyal fans, but one that lets Strapped evolve into something new and refreshing with the hallmarks of everything that makes the show so great.
Season 12 prompted me to plunge into a spirited Strapped re-watch (my first of the whole series), and I was curious where West Texas fell in my rankings. Think it shakes out like this:
Peoria
Baltimore
Louisiana
South Carolina
West Texas
Northeast
Iowa
Southern California
New Mexico
Reno
Tallahassee
Spring Break
It may be recency bias, but I think West Texas was important not only for its experimentation with the format (and just getting out there for the first time in almost two years), but because it broke a streak of what in my opinion was the clear “low” point of the series, from Tallahassee through Spring Break. South Carolina frankly would be there too if not for the GOAT breaking bad decision and fallout in the last episode.
Re: the earlier debate about the budget, I think it’s worth noting that cash basically wasn’t even a factor in Peoria, which I assume most would agree was a classic season (even if it’s not your favorite like it is mine). I forgot until the rewatch that the boys even questioned what they could possibly spend the mega bonus on in a locked-down, schools-out Peoria if they won it.
In my opinion, the formula for a great Strapped season is pretty clearly an interesting, off-the-radar location, good sherpas and funny locals, and Neil flirting with the megabonus. Some things DJ and the boys can plan for, but a lot is up to chance (including weather, obviously).
Ranking is fun and all, but the best thing about Strapped is that there is something (usually many things) enjoyable in each iteration. I think of it as a total volume as opposed to specific episodes.
