Like I said, if they want to evolve to make it more of a buddies trip show, that’s fine! But if it’s not going to be about fighting to stay on a budget anymore then let’s drop the pretense of having to play cheap golf courses. There is a wide gulf between the courses they play on TS and the ones they play on Strapped - feel like there’s more interesting options out there.
As a humble public servant Im keenly aware of what Im capable of!
I think it’s pretty clear from this and some of your other replies that you and I watch and enjoy Strapped for completely different reasons. And that’s just part of what makes the series so great!
Sounds like you need to corruption better
Neil talking how the college locker room sends all the memories flooding back was cool and i felt was a nice through line with the Friday Night Lights stuff and talking about how high school sports was an obtainable dream. So many great memories aren’t about the result but who it was with and how those people become some of your best friends.
I think your issue is less to do with the budget and more to do with the interviews/course choices. Feels like when Strapped started it was 50% “affordable golf and how it ties in with the community” and 50% “buddies trip”. This season felt like 95% buddies trip.
I’m still all here for it and as a viewer I have no idea on the constraints or causes for the shift but the town/golf aspect of old Strapped is what gave us interviews with St Rappeo guy, KVV in Baltimore, x games dude in Reno etc. which I thought was half the heart of the series.
Again, still love what they’re putting out its just a bit different
Yeah I think that’s on point.
I think my sentiment here is that the show doesn’t really know what it is right now. The budget element is clearly out, but they haven’t completely done away with it as much as sideline it. It’s still there, kind of not mattering. If you took this show in the direction of being the “No Reservations” of American golf, I’d be totally on board with that. But like you said, that necessitates some more highlighting of local flavor.
Rawls feels like the perfect course in that gulf. Doak design, university course, and $65 greens fee instead of under $40. I doubt they had much choice in Midland/Odessa.
Finally watched it. Strapped rules. That season ruled, so well done all around.
Re: Richman Houston. That kid left a round of golf in which he was -11 thru 15 to go to a party. 100% chance he knew he was getting laid and then it happened so that’s why his reaction was what it was when asked about it… “It was lovely. It was was an excellent decision.” Aka I got my mind blown.
The music was so perfect, money round back 9 machinehead drop and Kill Bill during sword fighting was incredible.
what was the tie to machinehead? I figured there was a reason it was played other than it just being a banger but I’m definitely not in the know on this one. Kill Bill obviously self explanatory
Yeah not including flights or rental car in the budgets has always seemed like a miss of the budget is the storyline. Those are two big expenses that play into normal people’s travel budgets heavily. I need them searching Southwest and Spirit for the cheapest flights they can find and try to fit everything into an economy car.
You have a lot of faith in random towns to have cheap and interesting golf. That combo is extremely rare - a good chunk of those have already been featured on one NLU video or another.
This wasn’t the intent, but Machinehead was the intro music for pre-ESPN Paul Finebaum. Hearing that after hearing the radio callers earlier made me think of that immediately.
Yes, coming (somewhat) soon.
Came here to say the same. Had to pause the video and text several friends to explain “electoral college round” and formally adopt it into the lexicon henceforth. Genius.
The back and forth in the airbnb post round one where they were just slinging wild metaphors around to describe their rounds was just absolute peak Neil/Randy banter
Nothing like a good post round debrief with some beverages - love that strapped consistently highlights it
Are there are other songs in the video that aren’t credited in the caption? I thought I heard a David Allen Coe song and a couple others that I didn’t see listed.
I think there are a ton of good places they could go they haven’t been. Albuquerque and Spokane come to mind (s/o @notjustinkaiser ).
How long did it take you to convince Randy to wear spandex with shorts for the money round
I’m confused. Are you upset about the towns being boring or the golf courses?
Agree there are some neat cities they could visit - Spokane (PNW in general) would be great but that doesn’t mean those places are bursting at the seams with interesting courses for $30-50.
