I enjoy looking at the Top 100 Greatest Lists and I don’t have a problem with the clubs at the top of those lists as they are pretty universally lauded. It is obviously extremely subjective and being old and all golf without road crossing or houses around them go a long way towards appearing on those lists.
They all also have a Top 100 Greatest Public courses, which lists courses that everybody can play and that list is growing yearly with the boom in destination resort golf, but a majority of those courses are remote and/or expensive.
It would be interesting to see a list of Top 100 Greatest Public Courses for Under $150, but compiling that list is easier said than done.
This is stellar. I’m super pumped it’s about my area of the country! I have played Waveland alot and when I was at Iowa State I played Veenker and Coldwater both. Glad you boys enjoyed the heartland.
Love the idea of showcasing “normal” golf for many of the people playing out here. We can’t all get sweet connections to play private clubs designed by the who’s who of golf architecture. Doesn’t diminish our level of passion for the game compared to cough the corporate types like Tron and Soly. Randy and Neil are men of the people!
Thanks Matt! I think episode 2 is where we hit our stride. It was a really fun trip, and the Big Guy and I are excited to do more of these in the future!!
The 3 ball rule would be a concern for me as well at Waveland. Almost no water, but a ton of trees, and I know they didn’t take carts but virtually every hole the GPS on the cart stops you to tell you that there is a blind shot on the next tee box.
Check out the work Andy is doing at the fried egg. “Bang for your buck” reviews the best courses state by state for <$100. I think they’re only 4-5 states in with a lot more to follow
I’m not saying I don’t appreciate those high-end courses, just that those rankings are akin to the feelings I get watching Top Gear when they compare Ferrari vs Lamborghini. Yeah, those are both great cars, we all know it and this will be great information to have when I win the lottery but until that happens, tell me about a nice affordable mid-sized SUV.
Guys, this thread warms my soul. Thanks so much for watching it! Definitely one of my favorite ideas we have going right now (and it only gets better after Ep. 1).
This. This would be outstanding. Not sure how they would do it but cheap car challenges maybe in the way that they all get a budget and pick a muni somewhere. Glad to see some fellow Top Gear fans
I am going to take this a different direction. Instead of selecting a golf course as a cheap car challenge, how about the guys compose ONE set of clubs from stuff they find on Craigslist, thrift stores, etc. Everyone brings what they found to a meetup and they draw straws to see who has to play the set for that round. That person’s score is tallied and placed on a board. The rest of the NLU crew has to beat that score when they play with the set. Once the NLU crew has their scores, they could have pros play with the composite set at Timuquana Country Club.
Fantastic idea. Rick Shiels has done this on his You Tube channel and I always find it interesting. Plus it’s awesome to see someone go into a store and come out with an original Callaway Warbird, or Burner Bubble. I’m a sucker for nostalgia.
Looking forward to the rest of the series. Also, I would like to give a shoutout to whoever chose the instrumental/theme music synergy with the title of the series. Brings me back to a much simpler time. Well done!
