“There you go giving a fuck when it ain’t your turn to give a fuck”-- Bunk has to be one of the best TV characters of all time.

Yeah, GTFO with Ziggy but still low key good. I don’t see McNulty anywhere yet. What are we doing here?

My list stopped for a reason. I think the characters are all pretty good. Great characters though, that doesn’t include everyone. I think one that I left off is Wee-bay. When he and his wife discuss letting Namond go live with Bunny Colvin is one of the more powerful scenes in the whole show.

McNulty isn’t a great character… fight me.

I will say he has his moments but I would not put him in the great category personally.

When he talks with Bodie in the park is quality. Then with Poot on the corner after.

Your point that Omar is one of the best characters and me trying to find great Wire clips reminded me of when Omar testifies. One of the best scenes in the entire show:

Yeah, I would go along with that. McNulty COULD have been a great character.

I can’t disagree w/ this take. Season 4 has a lot less McNulty, especially in the beginning, and its my favorite season of the show.

I’m not sure that correlation=causation in this instance. Yes he is involved less in that season but I think it does a disservice to the characters and the story in season 4 to say that is the reason why it’s the best.

I think the best story in the show (non Bubbs division) is Randy and Carver. My heart breaks everytime I watch it.

McNulty not a great character?? Now that’s a hot take.

He wasn’t my favorite character by any means, but he was a huge driving force on the show and I’d say he was a great character. Probably the character I disagreed with the most often, but that doesn’t make him less great. Without him causing chaos every now and then, it would’ve been boring.

Might be do for another rewatch

Oh most def.

Correct take on Omar. Horrendous take on McNulty. Sometimes you just can’t have proper discourse :joy:

“I shot the boy Mike Mike in his hind parts that all”

I didn’t say he was a bad character, just not a great one.

It’s not crazy. Often in great shows the main character isn’t the best character. Best example of this is Jerry Seinfeld on Seinfeld. Don’t know anyone who cites Jerry as their favorite character on the show.

I just think another actor could have done more with the role. Just personal preference mostly.

My problem with McNulty, and I’ve heard this from several people as well, is that his fake Baltimore accent was just terrible. Might have passed as a New York accent, but not even close for Baltimore. But also, his character is tough to like. He’s an asshole, a drunk, definitely not the best at relationships. Good police, sure, but it was tough to like the guy.

all he cares about is the job, and it makes him an interesting character with that mindset. I love mcnulty because of that, he’s more humanized in that way.

Also he provides some good laughs throughout the show

You’re not necessarily supposed to like him. To me he’s a great character and essential for the show. I don’t care about the accent as much but I get it. Either way, I love JM and will ride or die for that character.
