A fair point, but I’ll take the blame for any nuance that was stripped out there. @KVV gave an incredibly detailed answer to that question with a lot more context. For a lot of reasons, it just wasn’t possible to leave all of it in without losing the flow of the episode (or wandering too far off the “isn’t this supposed to mostly be a golf show?” path). Been kicking around the idea of posting his whole interview (which is about 40 mins) because it will paint a much more detailed picture of Baltimore than we were able to share in that episode.
Btw… just finished “Marriage Story.” Loved it. Lots to digest.
To be fair to you - i thought it was pretty inkeeping with the overall feel of the episode/series. This is a city of juxtapositions, of opposites, of blending. The most violent city in america but he cant understand why people are afraid of it is a nice kind of tie-together of that general idea.
Lovely season as always, probably your best in terms of shots, editing and presentation.
Getting some quite strong Bourdain vibes in this one, which is a very good thing.
Yo @Eric_Denver Baltimore is my hometown and the fear people have of the city is bullshit. Much of it’s based on subconscious (would be conscious if more people would look inward) racism.
When I was moving to Durham NC, people warned me about the danger for the same reasons people I grew up with don’t go into the city unless it’s for an Ravens/Os game, a night at Tio Pepe’s, or to take the kids to the Aquarium. My thought is they are dead wrong, and are choosing to live in a world they think exists, not the one they inhabit.
Baltimore does have its problems, but it’s chock full of good and real people.
Please take your family somewhere else if Baltimore scares you. You might find Amish country more to your liking.
@KVV that was a great analysis of Baltimore at the end of the episode.
I know we get on ED a lot, but his point I think was a good one. It’s difficult to say “come to Baltimore it’s great, but yeah it’s statistically the most violent city” without much nuance. I know kvv mentioned the nuance and it was sadly cut for well put reasons.
I have friends from around Baltimore and love it, but there is a big stereotype involved because of certain sub sets of the city that have very high violence claims. New York City in the 70s was the same way, Central Park, Times Square were dangerous places, it definitely had an effect. Narratives take time to develop and stereotypes take time to change, strapped does a great job of doing that for the people that watch the series, but it’s honestly a small group that watches.
As I said, subconscious or conscious racism or bias whatever you want to call it. You can live in the world with the people around you or you can ignore it.
Dude it’s not racism, Baltimore is the 4th most violent city in America. If it wasn’t for the duel in Detroit I wouldn’t want to go on a vacation there either
Detroit. 2,008.
Memphis. 1,943.
Birmingham, AL. 1,912.
Baltimore. 1,833.
Edit: or Memphis or Birmingham, or St. Louis, or a lot of the top violent cities. The question is does x have enough good things to offset the bad, in the duel in Detroit yes. For Memphis? Personally, no. I don’t think that makes me a racist
If you really think about it, we all carry tons of bias in how we perceive everything. As a white guy, I have had the privilege of living in a world that largely caters to me.
Didn’t come on this thread to detract from a great episode and Season of strapped. Happy Holidays. I’m going to go play golf to take advantage of 60 degrees and sunshine today.
I definitely have a pockets problem, which has been exacerbated by a lifetime of leaving shit in golf carts, like range finders, divot tools, cherished ball markers, etc. I figure if I always keep it on me, I’m less likely to lose it. It’s a problem no doubt.
Wise choice. I skipped through the interview at the end. I couldn’t care less about Baltimore as a city, just as I imagine people wouldn’t care about Erie as a city if it was in a golf show. Loved the golf parts of Strapped B’more, didn’t care for the rest.
For those that will care, you should post the whole interview. You’ve already got it. Easy “bonus” content.
I’m far too OCD for this. One golf ball, 3 tees, and repair tool/ball marker in my right front pocket. Maybe a phone in my left, but I usually leave it in the cart. Glove goes in right rear pocket (fingers out, like I know what I’m doing) and the occasional scorecard holder, only if I’m walking, in left rear.
As you well know, I’m not comfy unless I have at least three balls on my person. Phone because of arccos. Tees, ball mark, glove. Spare ball mark because sometimes I have to mark someone else’s ball. Scorecard. Sometimes wallet or at least cash.
You really have to watch all 5 - and trust me you’ll want to keep going anyway after 4. The newspaper storyline isn’t great, but it’s still better than 90% of other TV shows out there. Plus the series finale and the way they wrap-up and show you various endings is worth it alone. Really powerful stuff.
Also @djpie - that intro cover you did of “Way Down in the Hole” is fantastic. What are the chances of seeing a downloadable mp3 of that one? Maybe for Nest members?
In general, kudos to all of you on another fantastic season. You do an awesome job of showcasing the city more and more each season while not losing any of the golf content. And the next guest star has some big shoes to fill after @KVV. Can’t wait for the next trip!
A bias in how you perceive stats? I don’t understand your argument. Someone isn’t a racist if they don’t want to live somewhere that leads the country in violent crime, which could be perpetuated by any race.
