and don’t forget the 90 degree doglegs, with forced carries over hazards, and thick rough long through the fairway.
really the creeks running adjacent to every fairway is what put me over the edge I think.

interesting. haven’t played there. i’m a huge pete dye fan, but admit that most of his courses of a certain vintage (not his earliest stuff, which is freaking insanely good) are not among my favorites. Sounds like Cardinal probably fits in that category.
well come on up and we will go play it
I’m very much a Ross fan…although I say that a little tongue in cheek after getting absolutely eviscerated by #2 and #4, and this seemed like as far from a polar opposite you could get from a Ross.
The Cardinal just felt gimmicky. Doglegs were extreme with a ton of tree coverage, fairways lined with creeks on both sides and minimal rough…I’m sure there are some amazing Pete Dye courses out there, but it just left a slightly bad taste in my mouth for my first one.
We still had a blast though.
i’ve got so many courses in NC that I need to play, many of them right in that area, so i’d be up for checking it out, but would prefer to see some others first. NC has a ridiculous number of good and interesting courses, and i have barely played 60 of them yet…hopefully, nov & dec are mild, so i can see a few more new ones before the end of the year. of course, i will play in any weather, so we should plan something…
sounds good to me…whats your list around GSO/HP?
it’s easiest to just say i have barely played anything in the area, so i will take your suggestions on what to hit first…here is my NC played list…
Old Town Club Pinehurst #2 Wade Hampton Dormie Club Roaring Gap Mid Pines Pine Needles Mountaintop Charlotte CC Tobacco Road Pinehurst #4 Forest Creek – South Bright’s Creek Carolina GC Mimosa Hills GC Southern Pines GC Hope Valley CC Myers Park CC Pinehurst #8 Sedgefield CC Tot Hill Farm Irish Creek CC of Salisbury Duke University GC CC of North Carolina - Dogwood Grove Park Inn Tanglewood Park – Championship Catawba CC Whispering Pines, CC of - East Rock Barn – RTJ CC of Whispering Pines - River (West) Pinehurst #7 Greensboro CC - Irving Park Pinehurst #3 Talamore GC Skybrook GC at Ballantyne The Golf Village Par 3 The Divide Olde Sycamore Monroe CC Oak Hollow GC Oyster Bay Golf Links Tryon CC Gaston CC Emerald Lake GC Charles Sifford GC The Cradle Red Bridge Mooresville GC Eagle Chase GC Harry L. Since this is a mess, I tried to bold the ones I think are in the general area - not sure how to define the GSO area exactly - assume RDU is out and Winston-Salem is out.
holy mother of formatting
Peak stream of consciousness.
i didn’t want to post a long list and don’t really have time to do the nice list for i have used elsewhere
perfect, so Holly Ridge or Sapona for sure…Stoney Creek, Mill Creek, Jamestown, GSO National, Cardinal
One course I REALLY want to see is Alamance CC. I am told it is perhaps the most underrated (unknown?) course in NC.
lists 200 courses
Youre an animal @anon846171.
to be fair, very few of those are in the specific part of the state we are talking about - i was just being lazy and listing everything i have played in the state, to show him that only a few are in the GSO area.
i honestly had no idea Alamance CC existed, which really makes me want to play it now
i really dig their logo too

Membership in Alamance Country Club is by invitation only. To be considered for membership, a member must sponsor you, and two other members must act as your endorsers.
oh gotcha.
if i remember correctly from the Bill Coore podcast The Cardinal was one of the fist courses Coore worked on when he got his start with Pete
I’m imagining this list sung in Johnny Cash’s voice.
I love this line. “Barely” 60… in ONE state! Man, I want your life
pretty cool there
