Roll Call: Wisconsin - Madison vs Milwaukee

I disagree with Sentry World being overrated post renovation. Definitely overrated pre-renovation. Overgrown and some not very good holes. Now Its a fantastic course. I’m not a fan of Dark Ages RTJ courses, but the updates have really improved it while keeping with the RTJ heritage. Wish it was open this year so I could have played it again.

Digging all the guis on the Irish > Straits block. I’ll give straits another go-round later in life on a better day and with players I know. Glad I played it, but I’m good for now. Irish is valuetown and I really like it.

I have absolutely no lasting feeling from Bergamont. Okay track I guess, but not noteworthy for me or anyone I talk to.

That’s just your opinion man

But in all seriousness, you’re more than entitled to that opinion. Is it a good course? Yes, definitely. Does it “do anything for me”? Not a bit. Great conditions obviously, but the number of holes that I remember and think, yeah, that was/would be a good/fun hole (depending on how I played it) is pretty low in my opinion.

Being completely clear, I played Sandbox the same afternoon I went to SentryWorld (I never played pre-renovation), which may have jaded my opinion, as my entire time at SentryWorld I was thinking about playing Sandbox.

I get it that people have different takes. I definitely prefer Sand Valley to Sentry World and bet playing sand box right before would impact how you felt about the course. Its definitely and aerial approach course but I think there are some good new holes with strategic options. Its been a couple years since I played Sentry but it was a day trip and that was the only course on the trip.

As far as Whistling Straights ranking…I finally played it from the tips this year and would now rate it higher. Its a much better course from all the way back. Its not the length, but the angles. The tee shots are much more interesting from the blacks than the forward tees.

Anyone here in walworth county area? Kicking around the idea of GN, Spring Valley, or Lake Lawn on Saturday or Sunday.

So late to this discussion (procrastinating on a grad school paper has brought me here), but also don’t forget that the 14th hole plays into the prevailing wind, so both the tee shot and approach get 2x harder if there is any sort of wind.

For what its worth I don’t hate The Oaks as some people but that’s likely due to some low rounds I’ve shot there for qualifiers. However, I do hate how balls react on the greens - they have some movement but really none of the approach shots react “correctly” and you can get trapped in some really awkward spots for seemingly no reason.

I group The Oaks in the same category as Morningstar for any southeastern golfers - gettable, can have a fun time, but weird stuff going on with how balls react to the greens and some odd routing decisions.

Bergamont - People rate it high because it’s part of “The Legend” group. I just don’t see it.

Bishops Bay CC - Yeah, if you don’t mind a small mortgage it would be a great place to be a member. For the money in the Madison area, Stoughton CC is by far the best value for cost and course conditions. And it’s more blue collar too which helps cut down on the snobbery. lol

I’ve played some of best competitive rounds at The Oaks and IMO it can still just go away, especially for the cost and the amount of people out there. Then add in all the other parts that others have brought up and it’s a no from me.

I have never once heard anybody rate bergamont highly much less because it’s part of the legend clubs. It’s well known it’s their bastard, red headed step child that Jack would like nothing more than to dump. He puts no money into it and the members I know there would tell you the same. The course is generally in what I would describe as “okay” condition, the greens are almost always slow, nothing breaks at all on any green unless there’s a huge mound, the bunkers are a joke, and the “fescue” is just weeds and long grass.

I guess I hear it from high handicap friends who just seem to think it’s great. Glad to hear it fits in where everyone else thinks so too.

Someone put a bug in my ear recently about Stoughton CC. Don’t know anything about the place - routing looks like a bit of an adventure. Genuinely kinda curious about it.

I worked there for a couple of years back in the day so I might have a bit of bias. But the greens are always VERY good. Half the holes are from the original course and feel like a tight classic country club with small greens and sever slopes. The other half were built out on some farmland and feel way different and a bit more open with larger greens. It’s a nice mix IMO and having played it 50+ times I have never gotten bored by it. Just played it this summer again and it was as I remembered.

midwest- where do I sign up for the matchplay?

Thanks Chris! The dates for the Midwest Ope and that sheet don’t match up, is there a specific match play group for that? I see that the sheet is full, is there a waitlist until someone else joins as well?
