Just got around to listening to @drewp on the Trap Draw - very insightful! Hope you’ll return to Madison someday. Best wishes for continued success!
This is incredibly random, but my sister-in-law took our dog to the vet on Monday. Turns out the vet office moved a couple buildings down and these guys are now in the space:
Anyone heard of these guys? I just randomly came across the website today and the name instantly clicked because I winced when I heard the name come out of my sister in law’s mouth on Monday. So random, and I’m wondering if it’s only mail order or if I can stop in?
I believe you can stop in, but not sure with the different location. They were/are on silver spring when I first heard about them.
Morning, everyone. I’m new to the Nest. I’m MKE-based and would be happy to get out for a round with anyone else nearby or for a meetup. Thanks!
Where do you most commonly play?
Welcome aboard.
I’m out of Sheboygan, but always up for a round.
Haven’t gotten to Washington county yet this year…
Mostly MPD courses. Currie and Greenfield are closest to my house, but I don’t have a home course, per se. I’m usually content to try out anywhere.
Bump - 4th spot opened back up.
Hey all you MKE-ish folks… @drewp and I have a tee time tomorrow morning at 6:16 at Oakwood Park in Franklin. Anyone else want to join?
Takin this to the wisconsin thread – what are your top 5 curd places i should check out if i’m in MKE or MAD or elsewhere?
I haven’t lived in Madison (in ten years), but Graze and the Old Fashioned are both very solid.
The Old Fashioned curds are mostly fantastic because of their smoked paprika dip.
In the NE part of the state, I haven’t found better than Milwaukee Burger Company or Iron Duck (again, perfect dips).
Cross post copy and paste:
“Honestly I’ve had so many it’s hard to keep track of a definitive list and separate nostalgia from actual curd quality. I will say I very much enjoy the cheese curds at the following places - Lakefront Brewery, Lambeau Field, any and all supper clubs, Erin Hills, and The Old Fashioned in Madison.”
Just thought of another one in MKE - Vanguard in Bay View.
I’m not the biggest fried curd guy, but my wife likes to order them.
In no particular order: Lakefront Brewery, Milwaukee Burger Co, Charcoal Grill, The Vanguard,
Edit: If you’re at The Vanguard, get the poutine. The baked potato balls are also excellent.
Putting in a very enthusiastic vote for Gates and Brovi in Madison. Food is phenomenal all around and their curds are as good as they get in my book.
the key distinction for curd quality is just if they’re homeade or not right?
my favorites are also the ones where you can tell they cut the cheese up into cubes before breading/frying.
boathouse in LG is as strong as it gets IMO.
Also copy and paste from SV:
- Graze - Madison. Using Hook’s is basically cheating, but they’re the only ones doing it.
- Tipsy Cow - Madison. Their goat cheese curds are fire, but maybe not for everybody.
- Lakefront Brewery - Milwaukee. Clock Shadow curds are used pretty much everywhere in MKE, but Lakefront’s are pretty special in how they batter and get them crispy.
- Camino - Milwaukee. Also Clock Shadow but Camino has a really light fry to their curds, their ranch is unreal and the little parmesan dusting is unique.
- Coopers Tavern - Madison. Ellsworth Coop curds are widespread at this point, but Coopers does a great job.
And how they’re breaded can make a huge difference.
The cheese is pretty important. Not all fresh cheese curds are equal.
How they bread/batter is important as well. Lots of distinguishing features are made here including seasoning levels.
While it is possible to over/undercook fried cheese curds, it’s not terribly difficult for a restaurant to dial it in - it’s a pretty forgiving food.
Dipping sauce matters too.
I’m almost completely indifferent to shape of curd. Except at Milwaukee Burger Co. I kinda roll my eyes at the giant cube.
It was between Vanguard and Camino for me. Ultimately, most of the higher end pub places in Milwaukee are all pretty similar with very small differences.
The crafty cow has pancake battered cheese curds served with syrup. They were outstanding.
Also shoutout vanguard. Honestly haven’t been there before 2AM though so my opinion my be distorted
