Roll Call: Wisconsin - Madison vs Milwaukee

Do you love tree-lined straight holes with minimal features? Do you love 5+ hour rounds?

It is kept in above average condition though.

Welcome! Northshore here, we’re organizing a winter meetup in Brookfield in February - google sheet up above.

Hey - sorry, slow on the reply. I am about 60/40 on making it over. Depends on getting a few work things wrapped up in next couple of hours. I’ll shoot you a text assuming I make it out!

Hey all, I’m heading from Michigan to Minnesota for a wedding in July and I’m turning it into a 2 week golf road trip. I’ve been continually narrowing down my list & could benefit from some local knowledge at this point. Sorry in advance for how long this will be.

To give some background, it’s on 7/21 and I saw some Golfers Journal events in Minnesota on 7/24 and 7/31 I may try to hit, which effs things logistically, but I’m going to make it work.

1.) I think I have to pass on all the Kohler golf. There’s a trip in itself there & the price tag is so high.

2.) Is Erin Hills really worth $385? I wanted to play it on the way out, but could have a hard time justifying it over University Ridge, Lac La Belle, Shepherd’s Crook, or even Eagle Springs and Spring Valley.

3.) I’m planning to hit the central region 7/25-7/28. I’ll be coming from Duluth so it would be Big Fish to Sand Valley and Friday would be an extra day in Wisconsin Dells. I’ve got Trappers Turn, Wild Rock, & Coldwater Canyon noted. Any strong opinions?

4.) I’m planning to go back home through the Upper Peninsula. St Germain seemed like a sneaky good course, if anyone has played it I’d love to hear if you think I should stop as well.

Thanks in advance!!

Can only comment on Wisconsin Dells. Others may disagree, but I thought Wild Rock > Trappers by a mile. Trappers wasn’t terrible, but not in the same class. Haven’t played Coldwater Canyon.

Yes. At least to me it is. I can’t tell you how to spend your money, though, so you’ll have to make that decision. LLB is way too expensive for what it is, it’s an $80 course on the best of days. The others you’ve listed are good, but not EH good.

This is the only play for the Dells area, as @ahrensgody said. Trappers sucks, and cold water is very rarely in good shape anymore, at least not from what I’ve experienced.

Both of these are extremely helpful, thank you guys. I spend a good chunk of what I make on golf and I’m willing to spend, I just needed to hear someone say exactly what you did. I’ll most likely hit Erin Hills & definitely Wild Rock then as well.

Erin Hills is easily my favorite golf experience. It’s an absolutely delightful walk and everything about the facility is top notch. I love it so much. That being said, a small part of me always dies when I fork over the dough to play, so I get that. But like @midwestgolfbum said, it’s miles ahead of LLB. I played LLB at the $80 twilight rate, which felt right, but if I pay anything more than that I’m not a happy camper.

Good to know, thanks as well! This is why I reached out, gotta weed out the pretenders & I wasn’t sure about LLB.

I was actually out that way last week and accidently drove by and got very sad it was winter.

I would add that while eagle springs and spring valley have good bones and history, they are not maintained at a high level. Fine condition for the price, but go with appropriate expectations.

Depending on your timing Erin Hills might be tough. The Wisconsin State Am is there July 17-20. It’ll be in amazing shape for that but could be busy right away afterwards so tough to get on.

Oof, good to know. I would’ve been looking to stop July 20th so that’s a bummer. I could make it work when I come back into the Dells area, but we’ll see.

@Klebs01 yeah I’ve heard similar. I’ll be playing plenty of expensive golf so I wouldn’t mind mixing them in there at the start of the trip just to see the bones of the courses. Eagle Springs honestly seems really cool for what it is.

They actually might have some PM tee times on the Thursday - just no idea how busy they are with Monday / Tuesday having shut down all public play.

Appreciate the heads up. I might keep the date open to see if they can slide a single out there, but I won’t keep my hopes up haha.

I love Erin hills and definitely think you should play it, just sharing a different perspective on it.

To me

is not the description I’d give it.

It’s a ball-buster test that is probably the longest walk on a golf course you can make in 18 holes.

Play the right tees. I’m not long and did the green/white combo last time and it was perfect.

The kettle loop is also a blast. Like backyard golf on a us open course.

Drumlin is the best resort putting course that I’ve seen. Lights and old fashions.

Absolutely this, don’t be a hero. #teamgreenwhite

IIRC the walk is at its worst through maybe the first…10 or so holes? It’s not flat after, but I remember not being quite as gassed after that. So keep yourself hydrated and energized through that stretch if you’re able to go!
