Hello gents! I come to ask for some assistance. Coming in to the Rockville area for the annual Easter trip. What recommendations do you all have for that area? Playing with a few newbies so nothing crazy if possible.
Falls Road is probably the most beginner friendly 18 out that way. Not far from Rockville, short drive over to Potomac.
Hey everyone. Thanks for all the tips. I got a note app page going with the recs and will be looking out for course openings as we get closer to September. I was glancing at Airbnb and hotel spots around the Gainesville area so hoping to secure a spot somewhat close to Solheim course and then branch out from there for courses to play. I don’t care what all the other roost members say, you guys were great. Thanks again and maybe we’ll run into each other that week in September.
Is this because of our questionable logos and merch?
Hey guys and girls, englishman here moved over and currently living in reston VA. Finally getting around to sorting my golfing life out after the move, just joined hidden creek in reston so will be looking to sort a handicap out soon but after some reccomendations for local VA courses that are worth checking out now conditions are improving. I have just done the sign up for the roost aswell so may see some of you on that at some point
Welcome! I’m sure we’ll cross paths soon.
Welcome! Herndon Centennial is an easy walk, just around the corner. Reston National gets mixed reviews and is notorious for slow pace on weekends. Sterling Park is a nearby Par 3 course.
Farther afield are Laurel Hill, Westfields, and Twin Lakes (which has 36 holes, most of us prefer the Lakes Course over the Oaks Course).
Nice thanks. I think I’ve ran past the herndon course when i go along the w&od path it always looks inviting. Might be more the fact I’d rather be golfing than running though
It’s good. It gets a little swampy, but the greens are usually in good shape. Its a tougher test than you’d expect from the length.
If you ever want to drive west a tad to stoneleigh, send me a DM.

Last year I had the chance to take part in the rather silly exercise of walking 100+ holes of golf in a day to support the rather important mission of the National Links Trust. Together with 30 or so other crazies I played 102 holes in just over 12 hours before I had to head to Little League practice.
Over the day I walked 25+ miles, took more than 50,700 steps, and burned just under 9,000 calories. I managed to lose three golf balls, made 6 birdies, played 81 holes on the Blue Course, 9 holes on the White Course, and 12 holes on the Red Course. I even had the pleasure of a couple of guys who I met through the Refuge and the CGC Roost volunteer to tote my bag for a few loops.
Most importantly, the generosity of family, friends, and golf obsessed strangers I met on the internet helped raise $3,200 to support NLT’s efforts to ensure golf is accessible, affordable, and engaging for everyone.
All together the event raised more than $165,000, and I guess I did okay because they asked me to do it all again this year.
So on June 10th I’m going to set out to best last year’s 102 holes played and $3,200 raised by participating in The Hike at East Potomac.
East Potomac has held a special place for me over these last few years. It’s where my kids like to “take me” on Father’s Day, it’s one of their favorite summer camp destinations, and during the depths of COVID and after losing a friend to cancer, it has become an important early morning escape when I need to clear my head.
I believe that East Potomac and all of D.C.'s golf courses can and should be community gathering places open to all. I believe that municipal golf in D.C. and around the country should be accessible, affordable, and engaging. And I believe in the mission and work of the National Links Trust. If you agree, I’d love your help in supporting them.
I’d like to raise at least $3,500 this year, which means about $50 a day for each of the next 67 days. I’d also like to throw down the gauntlet and challenge first-time Hike at East Potomac newbie @Randy to some friendly fundraising competition.
You can make a lump sum donation, or make various outcome-based pledges if you really want to explore the studio space. Thanks in advance if you choose to #getinvolved.
Let’s gooooo @theD1
Just put some cash down for @Randy . Love(?) East Potomac. Played too many rounds there in the aughts.
Hey everyone, relocating to DC in 2 weeks. Despite originally being from PA, I have zero clue about golf in the area. Any general tips/overview? I’ve recently lived in San Francisco and Houston where you have to be on top of your game for great public golf and book courses diligently around midnight, guessing it’s the same here?
I’ll be in DC but working in Arlington, most likely taking the Metro to work but will have a car as well. Would love any tips! I’m guessing I’ll be priced out/not connected enough for any country clubs that are a reasonable commute from DC as well.
Booking tee times in the DC area is tough, similar to the Bay Area. I think the Bay Area is a little worse (from MD, relocated to the Bay Area two years ago).
I’d recommend the University of Maryland Course. Very solid track that’s normally in good shape. Also has a pretty good membership deal for young executives, although that’s got a waitlist now.
Hi Connor!
Jump in our DMV Roost WhatsApp and we’ll get you locked into some tee times. Welcome to DC!!
Definitely echoing what @NotADoctor mentioned.
Have to jump on tee times early and be willing to drive a decent bit for some of the better tracks near DC.
Early = setting an alarm to book the second they become available lol.
