Has anyone been to New Kent Recently?
Got a strantz weekend on the books right after labor day, RNK, stonehouse with some horseshoe thrown in for good measure, ill report back here soon
my parents live on 6…when i was home a couple weeks ago i walked out there about 730 or so saturday evening and played 6, 7 and 8.
i was pretty disappointed with the overall condition of the place to be honest…the fairways were spotty af, had weeds and dead spots all in them, the bunkers had standing water in them even though it hadnt rained in like 3 days and the greens were chewed up pretty good with ball marks
the staff there is pretty average at best, you are right and it can be slow af when there is actually someone on the course
A couple friends and I are thinking about doing a quick and relatively cheap golf weekend in September. Williamsburg popped up. What do you guys think about that? We can get a cheap room at either a Hampton Inn or Embassy Suites near Colonial Williamsburg, but what about golf? I know the golden horseshoe is there, but I think it’s a bit pricey. Are there any reasonably priced courses in the area that would be worth the time?
I’m confused, do you mean Stonehouse? I don’t remember homes on New Kent. I could just be miss remembering
Williamsburg has a lot of good golf:
There is the Horseshoe, and Kingsmill (you do have to stay there to play) those are the more expensive rounds.
I prefer the Kingsmill’s River Course to the shoe but I’m biased.
some other good/less expensive options:
Colonial Heritage is a nice course, a lot of land movement and well maintained. This was my favorite course for a long time. ($60 or so with a golf now hot deal.)
the club at viniterra Is a big track. But the winery is sick.
You can play Fords Colony Twilight for $25 after 4. and find deals for it online.
No I replied to a post about stonewall
My bad. I’ll see myself out.
Yeah I went out a couple weeks ago. Friday PM rate was well worth it!
Thanks for the info. Looks like Kingsmill is out if we have to stay there. We already went on a golf trip/Masters trip in the spring where we all blew our golf budgets. So this trip is going to be budget friendly. Would like to play the Golden Horseshoe, but not sure it’s worth it on this trip. I’ll have to look in to the others and see what the other guys say.
Got a Williamsburg trip on the books for three weeks from now
Friday: Stonehouse
Saturday AM: Shoe - Green or Colonial Heritage PM: Shoe - Gold
Sunday: RNK
Any idea for shoe-green or Heritage
VT grad from 2015 checking in. I live in Seattle now but had back to Richmond often since a lot of my family live there. My mom lives on Richmond CC and my grandparents live on Birkdale GC. Back in high school we’d come back to VA for the summer (lived in Scotland at the time) so I played a lot of the junior golf tournaments through Richmond. A lot of fun courses.
Echoing previous comments that the River Course is incredible. When I felt masochistic, I would suffer through the back tees. A 77.5 course rating is insane and probably a little low when the wind is blowing. I think they played an NCAA Regional Qualifier there back in 2011 and didn’t even tip it out, that’s how hard it is.
I’d love to grab a round next time I’m in town.
I’d go Heritage. Green Course is not my cup of tea. The ball stands up in the mounding off the fairway (they are all mounded “to bounce balls back into the fairway, that doesn’t work) So a lot of just missed get penalized, and worse shots get rewarded.
Another great Williamsburg course that isn’t cost prohibitive is Kiskiak Golf Course.
I played there again Saturday and agree with you. My first round at Stonewall was early season this year (maybe April), and the course was in terrible condition. The bunkers were mostly unplayable, and the turf was really spotty. I gave it another shot only because of all the good things I’d heard. And I liked the layout. In my 4-6 rounds since then, the course has been in better condition but far below its potential. Lots of invasive grass, pockmarked greens, and spotty fairways.
I’m really hoping that the course improves because it has a lot of potential. It’s a little jarring to play RTJ next door and see potential realized for that area.
i wouldnt count on it improving any time soon, maybe thats just me being negative, but its been in a constant decline as far as im concerned
my parents have lived there for the last 10 years and IMO it was nicer when they moved there than it is now
i worked at RTJ for 4 years and was there when stonewall was being built…i had really high hopes for it and thought with the $115+ they charged a round it would be the premiere public course in the area
its a big let down honestly
Reporting back from the Williamsburg area
RNK: the hype is real, place is awesome best greens we played over the weekend, a lot of really fun shots
Had to sub out stonehouse for spring creek due to dorian on saturday, it was great for what it was, excellent conditioning some fun holes, heard rumors of it going private
the horseshoes: Gold was great really cool routing and got the most out of the piece of land it was on, reminded me a little of mid-pines on how all the holes were pretty close. On the other hand green, it was a place to play in the morning that was it, felt like I played the same hole 16 times and then 2 cool par 3’s.
Played a bonus nine on the way out to spring creek at the schoolhouse nine, that place was awesome could of stayed there for much longer then we did
Anyone played Raspberry Falls Golf and Hunt club lately? Got an outing out there tomorrow but hopefully its not like last year where they have a $105 price tag on a $35 course. Nice layout and cool place clearly, just not up to par last time out.
I’ll be curious to hear what you think. I haven’t played it but I’ve heard others say exactly what you said. For me, it’s about an hour drive. I’m totally fine with that and the price if it’s worth it. But since I’ve heard others say it’s not worth it, I’ve never bothered to go.
Ok…so
greens roll extremely slow. Some burnt spots, some rough patches, overall probably a 5-6/10 on greens. The kind I’d expect at a $30 muni track to be honest, but some are much better than others. A few that looked great still, there is hope.
Fairways were not as bad as expected but a TON of GUR out there. Like literal shit ton. fairways like 3-4/10. Let down there for sure.
When the Pro is apologizing for the condition of the course before a shot gun, its never a good sign.
If you can play this for under 50, I’d say its worth it simply because its a great lay out and has so much potential still. But if I had to pay full price here I’d be ready to fight the super, real talk.
overall rating, 4/10. value for the money 1/10
Do you still have a monthly membership at Indy? I am considering it, but don’t know any other people playing there. Have been at Stonehenge, but leaving there at the end of the month.
