Roll Call: South Carolina Golfers

no news, yet.

We will be doing an event series across the state regardless of our roost status. Let me get through this week at work and I will be reaching out to some of those who have offered assistance to begin to plan out 2022.

Thanks!

As a note we have 36 people signed up currently, which is great!

Finally listening to the Roost reveal on the nest podcast. Getting pretty charged up! Happy to offer my assistance in whatever way I can.

I love the idea of incorporating the SC golf history. I made this up while enjoying some libations last week watching a certain someone beat “America’s Team”

Okay I need some help from people I trust. The wife and I are 99% moving to SC next year. Thought we were set on Bluffton/HHI but she threw a wrench in our plans and brought up Charleston as well. Anyone have strong opinions on one vs the other. Both golf and general life opinions welcomed.

Are you WFH or are you going to have an actual office? If the latter and in Charleston, unless you are loaded (you might be) you are probably looking at a 30-45 minute commute given traffic and general affordability in the Charleston area right now.

If you guys want a laid back, lowkey lifestyle, I would say Bluffton. You also won’t have nearly the amount of tourists. Granted, I would imagine 90% of the people that live in “Charleston” (Mt. P, West Ashley, Summerville, etc.) stay out of downtown for the most part anyway.

Also would add Beaufort/Port Royal to the mix. That would be my pick out of all of those.

Agree with @EZmiss, work is a big factor here. Real estate costs will be higher in CHS, but they aren’t giving it away along the SC170/278 corridors either.

And I almost never go downtown.

Big thanks for the responses. We both work in the hospital currently so we have work options in both places. We are coming from Center City Philly so either place will be a welcome change for us.

I’ve played a fair amount of golf in the HHI area but not much in Charleston other than Kiawah. Obviously this will play largely into which way I lobby my wife. I’m thinking I can’t go wrong with either unless someone thinks otherwise?

i would say HHI and the beaufort areas have more accessible golf than the charleston area

Agree, most of the quality golf in Charleston is private.

The Charleston area public golf is incredibly underwhelming.

Beaufort is great and definitely more low-key than Charleston and Bluffton/HHI, but a tough golf scene. Outside of Secession, which is largely a national membership, and Parris Island (which is great but a military course without a membership option), there isn’t anything really worth playing north of the Broad. Forty-minute drive from Beaufort to anything in Bluffton (ie golf, nearest Target).

My wife and I were in a similar spot(moved from Chicago to CHS in 2017). We chose Charleston(Mt. P) and are really happy about it. I think it depends on what you are looking for, if you have kids or want to start a family, etc.

I agree with some of the other posts, the public golf in Charleston is somewhat underwhelming. It is still basically a year-round season(compared to the NE) and the Muni is awesome. There are some solid spots like Dunes West, Stono Ferry, etc. I believe Patriots Point will be getting a Muni-esque renovation soon

We’ve visited HHI a few times and I don’t think I could see myself living there full time. It feels like more of a vacation destination. It would be comparable to living on Sullivan’s, Isle of Palms, or Folly.

Really appreciate all the posts. I’v spent time in HHI (parents moved there two years ago) and I go back and forth about it as a full time location for my family. I’ve only been to Charleston for a few hours before heading down to Kiawah so my only impression is of the couple blocks I walked through the city. Never been to the surrounding burbs.

Either will be a welcomed change coming from Philly. It’s pretty much simulator season here so it would be nice to have a year round season. Probably leaning more Charleston area due to availability of hospital jobs, etc but who knows. I’ll probably try to head down to Charleston for a long weekend next month to get a better feel. Once I get some dates I’d love to meet up and get a round in if anyone is free and interested!

What’s the patriots point status? I know a developer took over the lease 2 years ago. I assumed that the end was near.

I’ll put a plug in for the Aiken/ North Augusta area.
Lots of hospital jobs in the Augusta medical district and the public, even private if that’s your thing, golf scene is awesome. And we have easy proximity to the Lowcountry of SC.

CSRA is a good pitch, and underrated. You get some of the historic charm of Charleston and Beaufort, good accessible golf, lower cost of living and still have things to do along the water — not the ocean but within a relatively short drive on back roads.

I’m looking for some more insight on Camden CC as I’m thinking about joining this spring. I’ve played it once and it’s a gem, especially the front 9. I’d be doing the junior membership and want to know if it’s only a bunch of older folks or if they have a younger crowd that plays a decent amount.

Great question, I have no idea. I just looked it up and didn’t realize it has been that long already. Hope it was pushed back because of COVID and not fully shelved
