It is all preferences, but I’d put Wigwam in the upper tier and Palm Valley in the middle because the bottom tier is truly abysmal. Shoutout to Coldwater, one of the worst conditioned courses in the city, but for less than $60 it can be worth it.
Fair.
Coldwater makes me so sad because the pictures of that course as built looks like it has so many cool features and you play it now (or whenever the last time was I played it) and you can still see a lot of cool stuff in the ground … kinda. But some features (bunkers with sleepers) have been removed and others (a bunch of pretty cool greens) just don’t matter because the conditions stink and seemingly always have.
The other bottom tier stuff out west (Falcon, Estrella Mountain) has either closed or closed and reopened (which just always makes a course or any business feel tenuous) or is so far out west (Sundance) that it barely feels like part of the valley.
Headed to a work conference in Scottsdale next week in the Kierland Commons area. Any recommendations for places to eat or things to do in the area? Wanting to find somewhere fun to watch college football on Saturday as well. Sadly won’t have time for any golf; maybe next time!
Speaking of the west side courses. The Sun Valley courses can be a really good deal on occasion. You will be playing a shorter retirement course but some are conditioned well and nice change of pace.
There are some real landminds out there though.
Adding a post here to remember to come back and edit to give you the answers you need.
It’s a definite gamble.
I remember having a lovely time one spring afternoon at Willowcreek. ent in one afternoon and the guy in the shop was like, “We’re almost closed, we can’t rent you a cart.” And I said, “I’m happy to walk and carry.” And it was like the guy had never considered such a thing is possible even though the course is flat and totally walkable. But he did let me out and there was almost no one out there and the course was like a pleasant muni - a bit scruffy and nothing to write home about in terms of design, but wide enough, the greens rolled true, and there were 4-5 memortable holes, especially playing solo as the sun went down.
But end up out there, or at another retirement course with a funkier design, where you’re waiting on the grayhairs or possibly even paired up with a guy who wants to tell you all about why Hunter Biden’s laptop is the reason the country is going to hell (tough example, that actually happened to me at Oakcreek n Sedona) and it could be a really long day.
I had to wait until the ASU kickoff time was announced today. Looks like all the slots are filled until after 12, so I won’t be able to make afternoon work with the game, unfortunately. I forget if you said Sunday would work for you at all or not.
Just noticed that the Champions tour is at Phoenix Country Club next weekend. Is anyone going to be out there Friday or Saturday?
I will probably be out at PCC on Friday.
I’ll be out Sunday. If anyone sees a guy wearing an obnoxious champs tour minute shirt that’s me
Where did you get said shirt? I’d be out there lightly stalking a 23 year old if I didn’t have a crazy work week
I had it made lol. I am stalking PJ. Broke the news to my wife today
I may join all Friday if there is a group out there.
