Roll Call: Ohio (OATW adjacent) 2026 Major now official

Are you asking for a mutual acquaintance by chance?

Not for him. My Wife talked with his Wife last night and my golf nerding got curious.

Of course, someone needs to think about the golf!

Hey y’all… wanted to hop on here and give a bit of a PSA/life update. Not just to cry about it, but it does have some OATW/NLU implications.

The short version is, I’m no longer working at Hueston Woods. Myself and the head pro (a close friend) were asked to leave. Not necessarily fired; there is a difference, and I’m happy to share more, but I want to be careful about how I do that.

I do feel like we were done wrong. Beyond how it affects me personally, though, I feel like public golf in the state of Ohio has been done wrong. Whatever I say from here on out, I want to make sure it’s constructive; I care a lot about accessible and affordable golf, especially in my home state. Maybe I’m wrong, but I feel like there’s a lot more at stake here than just my career.

If you have questions, ask away. If not… grace, peace and craic on :v:

To me this sounds like they want to take it private, or jack the prices through the roof?

Might ask to have this on my headstone.

To keep it as succinct as possible:

Over the past couple of years, we invested a lot of time and energy. A soft rebrand, new events, and better pro shop merch (which was to include NLU stuff). We believed it could be more than just an average public course.

We were hitting our stride and things were looking up for 2026. Then we got the budget for this year… and were extremely disappointed. We were told verbally, and in writing, that the company could not commit to ā€œfuture improvements, raises, additional labor, or capital investmentsā€ - yes, that is a direct quote. (For context: if you weren’t aware, business operations at the state parks courses are managed by an out-of-state hotels company.)

In response, my friend (the head pro) and I came up with a proposal. We would step away from our existing roles, and through my small business (Albatrace Golf) run events and consult on day-to-day operations; much of what we had been doing as employees. Our only ask was for playing privileges and a limited run of our merch in the shop (I make maps of golf courses).

Essentially, we wanted to propose a way for the company to spend less money on our wages - ideally diverting that to course improvements - without losing much, if any, revenue.

At first, we were met with excitement. Then, within a few days, we received a counteroffer… again, highly disappointing. They wanted us to run a couple of events, but there would be no consulting, and nothing in the way of merchandise.

Frustrated, my friend and I took some time to mull things over. Two days later, we had a response drafted; before we could send it, we got a text from our boss, angry that he hadn’t heard from us. Then another text: ā€œThank you both for your commitment, passion, and time at HWGC, but I see it best that we go our separate ways.ā€

So, in summary:

  • Hotels company doesn’t want to spend money on golf course.
  • We offer way for them to spend less money but still make the same (increase profit!)
  • Hotels company rejects offer, terminates employees.

Make it make sense.

Yes, they want to jack the prices, but they already did that the last couple of years and got a bunch of complaints.

The state would never let them take it private though. There would be riots if they tried.

So sorry to hear the news, Vincent. It sounds like you guys were at least somewhat prepared for this potential outcome, given the counter proposal… but it’s still really frustrating to ever lose your job.

Any idea on your plan from here? Or taking some time to decompress before determining next steps?

Just signed up!

Well, I love golf, so I’ve been looking around for something else part-time in the industry. Probably at another golf course - I’m hoping to be able to do that, build my business on the side, and hang out with you sickos a little more!

FWIW, I hope none of this comes across as ā€œwoe is meā€ - I’ve given it some thought, and I wanted to share what happened, in hopes that something can be done. Hueston Woods, and public golf in general are near and dear. Seeing its growth stunted in this kind of way is pretty painful, but I’m young and zealous and I’d rather try to find another angle at it, instead of just taking my ball and going home.

Let’s start a revolution.

I have some literature for this

What general part of the world are you living in? Do you call Oxford home?

I’m in Hamilton. Went to high school in Oxford, played high school golf at Hueston Woods (with my friend, the former head pro).

We could find some of that grass eating shit that some places were dealing with the past couple of year and just sprinkle it in the areas y’all wanted to fix while some of us play there and force them to spend money.

Hello all, Mr @PlumbBobMillionaire has offered to help this year and is going to be working on a survey to send out in the next few days. If you could all make sure your email address is correct on this sheet i’d appreciate it.

Sorry I’m still new to this. Do I need to officially declare to get on the list? Planning to play a couple of events this year.
