Happy to help if you could use extra hands. Easily one of my favorite golf experiences

A thought for a Cleveland event—it ain’t Manakiki or Sleepy, but I’ve always thought a team event at Seneca could be fun. 27 holes, partners and play a different format each 9. If there were interest I could possibly get the times secured since my FIL works there.

I really appreciate that. I think it’ll be easier for me to plan this year, having it at the same place. Work is crazy now because I’m cleaning up and re-establishing the company in a neglected territory, but the plan is to have that all done before the end of Q1, but I’m personally trying to have it done by mid February. We put a huge dent into it today too, so I’ll be less stressed and have more brain power outside of work pretty soon

Remember you got a guy with boots on the ground a mere 8 miles away.

Asking for opinions for absolutely no reason other than I’m waiting out halftime of this awful football game….

If this came together I’m curious which format would work best on each 9. For anyone that has played all 3, feel free to opine! My thinking…

Alt shot on Chippewa—by far the easiest 9 so the most likely to still be playable on one ball. Though better ball scoring could be fun because fuck it, let’s pin our ears back.

Two man scramble on Baldwin—hardest of the 3. Generally the longest round. Fairest course on which to get 2 cracks at it each shot.

Scotch 2some on Furnace Run—because not having it in this sort of event violates the Geneva Convention, USGA rules, and basic human decency.

This sounds like the most fun. All the way in.

If Scramble were replaced with Chapman, there’d be three approaches to Alt Shot which might set the theme for the event. Chapman, which I literally just learned about on the Google Machine, is: both players tee off, players switch balls for their 2nd shots, then alt shot from the better ball for third+.

In the words of Seneca, the Roman stoic philosopher, ā€œAssociate with people who are likely to improve you.ā€

I’ve never played Chapman but I’ve heard it’s kinda mid. I’ve also never actually played Scotch 2some, but every person I’ve ever talked to that has says something akin ā€œthat’s like, the most fun.ā€

Thanks for the quote. First new thing I’ve learned today.

I’m a sucker for a well executed theme.

We played this at our 27 hole Member/Guest at Oberlin this year and it was a lot of fun albeit confusing for the first hole or two. It’s great to have two drives off as options plus the second shot aspect. Provides a nice difference from traditional Alt Shot.

What can y’all tell me about Mill Creek in Youngstown?

Worth it? Is one of the two courses better than the other? Challenging? etc.

Thanks in advance!

I have played the South course on a trip to Cleveland last year. I was told it was the more ā€œproperā€ course so I went with it. It was fine, but I wouldn’t make a trip to go do it again, especially with the amount of stellar courses in the area (Reserve Run, Links at Firestone Farms). A lot of narrow, tree lined holes with slight doglegs that were pretty boring.

Hey everyone! Hope the new year has been treating you and yours well so far.

I hope this doesn’t violate any unspoken rules; if you know me well enough, you know I’d never want to lead people away from NLU or OATW. Sincerely love all of you guys and the community that this place has fostered.

I’m just popping in here to let everyone know I’m hosting an event at Napoleon in May, if any of you are looking for another opportunity to play there in a fun format. It’s a 2-man net best-ball in the morning (18 holes) with alt-shot elimination in the afternoon. High-stakes competition; without going into too much detail, there’s a decent chance that you might go home with one less golf club in your bag.

We’ll have the Outlaw Smokehouse truck in the parking lot for a couple hours during lunch; everyone gets a few small gifts as well.

Full disclosure - this does (marginally) support me and my small business. If there’s any issues with that being posted on the Refuge, I completely understand and I’ll take this down. Just thought it’d be easier to let you all know about it this way; I’d rather have my friends there than a bunch of randos.

Pretty good chance this is the same weekend, or the weekend before, we have the Major in Findlay. Just FYI

Robbing the country club to pay off massive gambling debts then chilling at your father in law’s vacation property in Mexico is quite the story. Former golf pro on run in Mexico indicted for stealing nearly $1M from local country club

I took a case of beer once from Sycamore. That’s the same right?

That’s a rite of passage when you work at a golf course. Fair play.
