I’ll be visiting some family in Kettering for the eclipse. Not sure if I’ll get a chance to play but if I do what are some good options in the Dayton/Cincinnati area?
What are you looking for? Dayton has a little bit of everything for everyone and it’s all really good.
Just some good public golf recs, preferably walkable but not necessary.
You want a Donald Ross with fun greens? Miami Shores north of town. Easy walk - $25
You want some old school architecture that hasn’t been touched and is delightful and maybe can only do 9 holes? Mound GC in Miamisburg. Slightly harder walk. $9 per 9 holes, you can loop it twice.
You want a bit more of a challenge with greens that are always fast and still some fun architecture? Community Hills, harder walk. $25
You want a shorter course also in town with some really fun half par holes? Community Dales. Easy walk. $25
You want superb conditioning above all else? Yankee Trace. Slightly harder walk. $60
Want two completely different 9s with simple greens all in one place? Cassel Hills. $25 (I actually have a gift card here I could send you as I won’t be able to use it)
Fun architecture at a scraggly course with some really fun greens and blind shots? Meadowbrook at Clayton. Slightly harder walk. $25
If you’re adept at walking, none of these should be too difficult for you to walk really. We have a lot of really fun options here.
Appreciate it!
Guis, how is the walk at Pipestone? My son has a junior tourney in a few weeks and wants to know if its better for cart or carry.
I’m going to go carry. The front nine is classic Arthur Hills where you go down into a valley and then 5 of the next 6 holes alternate going downhill or uphill on a fairly severe slope.
The back 9 is pretty darn and relatively flat walk, but that front nine can be killer.
Perfect intel! Thanks Ryan!
Anyone going to Pinehurst needs to stop in the Tufts archives and go through the binders of Ross drawings with notes and stuff. Especially go through all 18 holes of our beloved Manakiki. I always spend a lot of time in here on trips. The history nerd in me loves it.
Follow up. Based on the archives I now have a second protest hole at Manakiki. I will now also be playing #15 from the tees on the left side near #14 green. The upper tee and right tees cannot be found in the OG drawings.
Ehhh
I’m on board with this. The right ones are length for the sake of length, and the uppers always seemed gimmicky. As if that green and hole wasn’t made hard enough by the launch pad of a cart path 1 foot off the green.
Toughest par 3 in Cleveland.
Is cart, push cart or riding cart? I dislike push carts on hilly courses personally. I always carry them.
Push or carry are the options. We are going to play it on Saturday so we will get a look at it.
Still waiting on our Cinderella to come fill our last last glass slipper. There’s no way all of you have plans that day. Come earn some season long points toward qualifying for the Roost Championship team!
I will volunteer to be your partner if you come play! Or if that’s not appealing I will volunteer to not be your partner. Either way, we’re not losing to TTUN.
I would prefer to carry that course personally. It’s a tough walk but almost all of it is on the front nine when you are still fresh. If he could carry the front and push the back that would be ideal. If the rules would allow it.
I really like Pipestone. A member there has the same name as me and when I make tee-times they give me his member rates and whoever I play with gets the reduced guest fees as well.
The Reds may be the best team in the history of Major League baseball.
