Roll Call: Ohio (OATW adjacent) 2025 Major now official

I think some of the other roosts have the advantage of being very centrally located ala Philly, ATL, etc. Tougher for us to get 50 guys from all over a huge state to participate in a one day event.

Something that should be considered is that people are getting older, and families bigger. That leads to less golf overall and consolidation of rounds. I know a few guys near me who are just simply too busy now to blow a whole day like this, where 3 years ago it wasn’t even a thought. Personally, I’m really close to not being able to go, but my wife is awesome, and driving up and back same day helps sell it to her (and myself, mentally). Plus I like Sycamore and playing golf with all you ā€œSyckos.ā€

So what I’m hearing is we need to start offering Good Good merch in our raffles

I’m starting a new youtube channel called Bad Bad. Also just did a quick check of registrants on the other roosts UKG events and there’s really not many over 30. I think the Findlay number is actually pretty solid. Just hoping for some decent weather.

With family commitments and travel/cost for other things and golf tournaments, I couldn’t justify traveling yet another weekend for golf. I love the events, but I think we can have a lot of activity in our roost for guys to connect and play locally. I am always posting tee times and trying to get out with guys close to Akron/Cleveland. We can play early in the morning and get home to our family commitments.

Small meetups (1-3 tee times) are always really fun. Not everything has to be an event with 50 people traveling in from everywhere.

I’m not attending because of the time of year. I’m guessing that this has to be early-ish in the summer since it’s an NIT qualifier, but in early May I never feel like my game is ā€œreadyā€ for a big event with internet strangers. I’m a sicko and have only played 12 rounds this year. To me these events feel like 2nd half of summer things to prepare for.

I don’t want this to come across as dick-ish, but I think you are completely missing the point of what these events are.

I would guarantee that 98% of the folks playing Findlay haven’t played 12 rounds this year, I would venture to guess that a significant portion won’t even play 12 the entire year.

Nobody cares what anyone shoots, or what shape their game is in. I don’t think all that many people really care if they qualify for the NIT or not. It’s more about the hang and getting to know this group of guys.

I would say that if you are sitting out these events because you don’t think your game is up to snuff you are really missing out.

I have really enjoyed the events I have played in. I couldn’t make any last year due to scheduling issues.

This weekend is my high school baseball team’s 30 year reunion of our state title runner up finish (I am old AF) and the Springfield event is when I am in Sweetens. I plan on trying to make it to a couple of the later ones.

I really like Sycamore, and would like to just drive up and play it later this summer.

My son will be starting his senior year of high school/golf season this fall and after that, I would really like to be more involved with the roost.

Maybe that’s on me for not researching it more before deciding I was out. The refuge post says ā€œOATW NIT QUALIFIERā€ in the name of the event so I assumed it was priority 1: qualify and priority 2: hang.

I don’t care that much about qualifying either, but thought that was the point of this event which is one reason why I skipped it.

You’ve probably played more golf than almost anyone here. These events are for an NIT spot, but no one treats them like life or death competitions. You certainly don’t need to be in prime form to come out and have a good time.

Anytime you want to come up and play, I’m sure either Joe or I would be available to get a round in with you

I would love that. I’ll shoot you guys a note. My Saturdays are pretty wide open after July 1.

I live near Cleveland but playing in a charity scramble in Cinci this weekend, tomorrow playing Blue Ash at 330. Hoping the rain doesn’t ruin that.

I also will never have child obligations and I have a very cool wife who travels often for work so I could spare some free time to help out if it were a committee type deal, I won’t lie to myself or to yall and pretend I could handle being top dog, I am just not organized enough for that. More of a hardworking, reliable helper than a captain. If responsibilities were shared out I would happily take one of the areas.

I am not going to this one because it is a lot of events in a short period of time and I do have another hobby that eats up weekends when the weather is nice.

I haven’t forgotten about our second date, just a crazy busy couple of weeks going on currently. Excited to play together again at Maxamania. I will say I find making friends as an adult who share similar interests as you get older just isn’t easy and getting involved here and meeting fellas I like riding the struggle bus with has made the membership worth it to me easily and I am excited for future events and making more golf friends from here.

that is just a silly reasoning, we are amateurs and the majority of us aren’t that good. I went 0-4 in match play and played horrendously at the RBR, had never met anyone I played with. It was a blast and playing shitty golf with other mostly shitty golfers no matter the time of year is a great day in my book.

You can drink on golf courses too. It doesn’t have to be a patio. JK

I’d guess there was probably a 25% to 75% ratio of trying hard vs drinking 6 high noons throughout the day and vibing last year from what I could tell. Definitely just as much of a fun hang imo.

I’m showing up to shoot 120 and make sure you all know who this idiot on the refuge is in the future.

That’s what the day is all about

Just commenting so that @AZacOfAllTrades doesn’t feel like he’s alone in his reasoning because, I also felt that the NIT spot was always up for grabs too early in the season and my game was never ready for the chance to try and win it.

I understand that most of these events are not about the competition and more about the hang, but having an NIT spot on the line makes it shift slightly more toward the competition IMO. The NIT is the event for us all to try and qualify for. We’ve all seen the posts and videos from the event and the thread is always rocking every year so why would we not actively try to qualify for that when their is a spot on the line?

That’s a good push. Ideally our NIT qualifier would be later in the season because almost nobody is in form the first week of May. That’s especially true this year given the amount of shitty weather this spring.

However, the NIT spot has zero impact on whether or not I play Findlay. While I’d love to play in the NIT, it feels almost impossible for me to win a quota event, as I’ve explained in another thread. I go for the hang, and if the stars align, so be it.

I mean something can be two things at once, you can have something that is a great hang but also very competitive. It would be super cool to qualify and get to play in the NIT, competition and trying hard are enjoyable but I also temper that with the fact I am a 35 year old who put in a lot of time and effort to become a crappy 10 handicap. I simply love golf and attending events and meeting fellow sickos means more to me than qualifying for some year end event. It just feels far too self serious (a big problem in golf) to not attend events because qualifying is on the line and you aren’t in top form. This is community with events full of amateurs of all levels, grown adults shouldn’t feel so insecure they won’t show up because their current form isnt ideal, at the end of the day it’s a silly game we happen to love. I am comically out of form so far this year, playing way worse than my handicap. Including the RBR I have played 8 matches so far this year and I got my ass kicked in all but one. Competitively, that sucks, I hate losing. But more than I hate losing, I love golfing with others who are as passionate about this dumb game as I am and get to spend time outdoors with others enjoying ourselves.
