Roll Call: New Hampshire

Hey, let me know if your NH travels will take you as far west as Hooper.

I’ll be back in July. Schedule is still being worked out for then.

Damn…1 week too late. I’m arriving this Saturday, the 27th. Where’d you play?

Didn’t end up pushing the envelope. Still planning to target Lake Sunapee Country Club for the AM of my wedding next year, hopefully have a chance to take a loop between now and then.

Working on getting on it…my pro is contacting theirs, waiting to hear back. I’ll give you a scouting report if I can make it happen.

Between the generally friendly Upper Valley vibe and the fact that they specifically do outings, I’m sure you’ll be able to play.

Traveling by RV (travel Trailer) with the family and staying at Shattuck Golf Course Sat 27th-Sunday 28th, planning to play last thing on Saturday/ 7am tee time Sunday. Anyone up for joining me?

I’m a newcomer to NH and played Montcalm recently. I’ve seen some other posts about it here. It’s so good! This has to be one of the best courses in the state. Funny story with that course is there was a very wealthy man that used to play Quechee all the time, and he liked his 7:30am tee time. Played there whenever he wanted, 7:30 first one off. Well at some point their policy changed and he was no longer able to get that tee time whenever he wanted, so he bought 400 acres of land in Enfield NH, and hired George Sargent (I guess a decent architect?) to build a golf course for only him and his friends. It worked very nicely for him. As others have said, it has since been bought and made semi public. There was some serious money poured into this place and it shows. It’s awesome. 5th hole definitely has some Augusta #12 vibes.

Interesting story! I’ve heard similar stories that the original owner wanted “his own place” and that the Enfield exit on 89 was created simply because he was friends with the road contractors that were building 89.

Makes sense. There is nothing else on the exit.

The people there are super nice. Definitely willing to sit down with you and tell you some stories. Apparently the original owner was a very eccentric, no nonsense guy. If he saw you in the wrong spot, he wouldn’t fire you but he’d make you want to quit.

What a gem it is. I have been lucky to play it many times, as we are close with the owner.

When I think of my own dream course in my head, this club house and post round hang is as pure as it comes. Major porch envy. Great course, great vibes.

Loving all the Montcalm talk. Here’s a photo from a round last summer. Need to get back there in 2020, somehow.

Played Shattuck yesterday afternoon. In some of the best shape I have seen it in a while. Fairways are firm, greens are super true and was a lot of fun. Still kicks you in the face at all times, but definitely worth the play.

This is a sad day for New Hampshire golfers. The Dartmouth College president just sent out an email communicating that HCC will be permanently closed and the Dartmouth men’s and women’s golf teams (along with a few other varsity teams) will be eliminated.

“As part of our overall budget reduction plan, we will permanently close the Hanover Country Club. In recent years, as the cost of operating the golf club has risen and memberships have declined, Dartmouth has had to absorb annual operating deficits in the range of $500,000 to $700,000. Those deficits swell to more than $1 million annually when deferred maintenance is included. Given the downward trend in the golf industry nationally, it is not realistic to expect these deficits to subside. As a result, we are no longer able to justify a deficit of this magnitude. The property, which we have no plans to sell, remains important to Dartmouth’s future. We are committed to providing public access to the adjacent Pine Park and, in partnership with the town of Hanover, we will explore how to safely open the land for community recreational use.”

Noooooooooo!!

Hopefully someone will step up and buy it. This may be the start of things to come for some courses throughout the country…

Sad day, for sure

Planning to play Country Club of New Hampshire Saturday morning 6:20 a.m. tee time. Anyone in? Staying there Friday night via Harvest Host.
