Roll Call: Nashville (Spring Match Play Post 1319)

When Greystone is in good shape (and it should be coming out of the winter), it is the most fun golf course in (Greater) Nashville. Also fairly wide in a lot of places so you can just get out there and swing away on most holes. The first tee shot on the first hole is not indicative of the rest of the course, haha.

MBSP is a beautiful course cut into the woods (like really, it is deep in the middle of a state park) with some very cool holes and looks from the tee box. I will say some of the tee shots are a bit intimidating from the back and it plays longer than the scorecard says due to how tight some of the landing areas are. Greens can also get going pretty quick. Great course, especially if you are accurate off the tee.

MBSP should be perfect this time of year. I made the mistake of going late Oct/Early November when the most of the leaves had just fallen. Still fun, just need to bring a lot more balls.

Interesting post re Kings Creek:

Shelby Park Golf Course is hosting a 9 hole Wednesday evening 2 man golf league that started today (through Spark Golf). I live in East Nashville, so I figured Id try it out. Lasts 18 weeks if any others are interested. A friend and I played, but actually were on a waitlist until yesterday. I didn’t realize until now that it was designed by Donald Ross in the early 20s. I wouldn’t have believed it since it’s not in the greatest condition, but a decent muni course for the cost. Greens could be better and very hilly to walk. Great for the calves and quads. Anyway, I found this article in the Golfers Journal (issue 10) that shows some original course designs by Ross. Pretty neat to see he actually did draw up plans for the course after seeking help from other designers. Not sure how close the plans are to today’s layout, but No 5 looks pretty close to what he drew in one of the pictures and has about the same yardage. Would be cool to see how it could play under better conditions/maintenance. Short course, but very unique and challenging in some respects. Also a good possible location for Strapped @MerchCzar @Randy @djpie Other great munis nearby also. Really enjoy McCabe

Try to get on presidents…the hermitage people are just great. Then loop back for a quick twilight 18 on generals.

What I read (I think from TGJ) said Riss designed a course that was never built. He did not design Shelby.

Then when they found the plans they used the greens from the Ross design to design the greens on the Vinny Links course.

Still very cool. I need to get over there and play it sometime.

Yeah it seems like an odd layout to be a true Ross course. Weird that they put his name on it as a designer. I haven’t played Vinnylinks yet.

Vinny is great. I’m down there all the time. If you see a bright blue 4Runner TRD with black wheels, I am there…certainly not running or exercising lol

Anyways… I have a spot at 1pm at Two rivers if anyone wants to join. Right now it’s me and a good buddy and maybe one more but I have a 4some down so I have an open spot.

I have played Shelby 4-5 times since they re-opened and I like the course slightly more than I used to but I find it very hard to make anything over 5 feet out there due to the bumpiness of the greens (which makes it hard to get up and down and just score in general). I always walk it and it is a pretty brutal walk in a lot of places. I want to like the course but ultimately I don’t have that much fun out there. Add to that holes 4 and 5 are like mirror images of each other and a lot of the other holes, at least to me, stink. I think the combination of uphill shots to flat greens gets old after a while. The best part about Shelby is that you can always play pretty fast out there, or at least as fast as you can walk up a 10 degree grade.

I will have to agree with you on this one. I think the back is probably the best 9 but you can never seem to play it when you just want to come on and play 9 holes…

I do wish they would do something to the second hole now that it lost all the trees. I really like holes 11 all the way through 17. 18 is alright but its another up hill shot in unless you blast it right which is a flatter lie and a good view of the green on 18.

very interesting…anyone played it recently?

Played it Saturday. It was as good as it’s been in a long time. Hopefully it stays in good shape

Anybody going to the KFT event this weekend in College Grove? I’ve never been to a pro golf event so we are going Sunday. Single day tickets are only $15

Anyone been to Sewanee in the last few weeks? Trying to figure out if they are re-opened to the public

Supposed to play Sweetens tomorrow, but I’d say that’s a 99% washout cancelation based on today’s rain. Hoping I can move up the mountain. Tried calling but not getting an answer

Hey everyone,

I’m moving to Nashville in 2 weeks and looking to make my way around the public course circuit. What order would you recommend I play them in / how would you rank them? Thanks for any help or recommendations!

First thing to know when moving to Nashville is that we all have very broad definitions of “Nashville golf”. For example, I’d suggest The Course at Sewanee as a top pick and it’s 75 minutes away.

Municipals (close to the city)

  1. two rivers (best land, friendliest staff)
  2. Harpeth (best all around course, annoying staff)
  3. Ted Rhodes (best vibe)
  4. McCabe (most crowded)
  5. Shelby

Publics (most of these are 25+ min outside city)

  1. Henry Horton State Park - best greens
  2. Montgomery Bell State Park - best land
  3. GreyStone - fun course, long rounds
  4. Hermitage Prez Reserve

I like the above 4 all in the same tier. They have their pros and cons but all good and hard to separate. 5 people might rank them 5 ways.

Next tier publics

Hermitage Generals Retreat
Gaylord Springs (overpriced and well documented ITT)
Kings Creek now dba Towhee

I don’t do north Nashville or northwest Nashville so someone else will have to chime in on that area.

Re: Sewanee

Answered my own question. They are back open to the public for the summer but you have to call to schedule.

I am not such a huge fan of the Presidents course at Hermitage…I think it is very overpriced and kinda meh layout wise…Not bad by any means and I would play it in a heartbeat if someone got a tee time and invited me.

I would say the Legacy up north of downtown is one left off the list that is very deserving. Can hit a slow round out there from time to time but overall I enjoy it out there.
