Roll Call: Nashville (Spring Match Play Post 1319)

Sorry to hear that @Bbadower , if you are trying to squeeze in 36 I would recommend:

Option A: Hermitage Golf Course as they have 2 courses on site, both of which are very good and in the conversation for best publics in Nashville. Presidents is more secluded and has a bit more of a wow factor in terms of hole to hole variation, Generals is more connected/walkable and, at least to me, a little more challenging. They probably have a replay rate or something that I would ask about if you do that.

Option B: Haven’t been out to Greystone (Dickson) in a while but it is a great layout however their conditioning can kind of ebb and flow. If you play out there you can pair it with Montgomery Bell State Park which is a great walk in the woods albeit a very tight piece of property.

P.S. - Please don’t play Gaylord.

No need for 36–18 will do just fine. Appreciate the recs!

Little Course down in Franklin is a solid spot to practice. Range is a corner of the Legends range (might still be on mats). There is a small short game green and a good sized putting green.

Anybody want a meet up to play Harpeth Hills tomorrow (Saturday 3/20) a little after noon? Feel free to DM me. I’m a 6 handicap non murderer.

This is very accurate. I worked at a private club around Nashville a couple years ago and push carts were not allowed. GM just didn’t like how they looked.

Could not agree more re: Gaylord. Think way too highly of themselves.

I am not a nest member so I can’t DM you but I was thinking about trying to walk out on Harpeth tomorrow at some point. Just after noon sounds good if I can get clearance (my wife is pregnant and we have a 2 year old). Will update this post but just wanted to respond since it is exactly what I was planning on.

Little Course in Franklin is THE driving range hack in Nashville.

You get to hit off the back of the Legends maintained range, and there’s a solid short game area that’s in better shape than the average course given the conditioning focus they put on the Little Course.

If you are out west, I would just go to Harpeth Valley Golf Range. Better experience than just going to a golf course.

@Bbadower Greystone is a great track, but they aerated their greens a couple weeks back and they are still healing. I played a tournament out there on Saturday, and while the greens are certainly playable, Hermitage is in better condition right now.

PS @VandyLand is right. Avoid Gaylord at all costs.

Hope everyone is okay after the flooding.

The Bridge got absolutely swamped this weekend. Old Natchez is pretty bad too.

I can’t get that post to load. I would imagine The Bridge is underwater in several spots.

Crazy how bad some places got it.

Tough scene around Nashville. Hope everyone on here made it out OK.

We moved a few blocks over in Crieve Hall back in September, and our old house got it pretty bad. One of the reasons we moved was because we didn’t love being at the bottom of a hill with a creek across the street.

Having some file format issues and then just gave up.

The bridge at the Bridge (between #4 and #7) was almost entirely under water. All you could see was the top of the bridge. The cart pathway of the bridge was under. 7 green was under water. #2 was entirely under water.

The back side was bad too. 12-14 were all under water.

Anyone want to join me Friday at The Legacy? I’ve got 1 spot at 10am. I was planning on playing solo but I’m paired with two other guys so I snagged the 4th in case anyone wanted in.

I have an appointment to get the COVID vaccine at 10:15 or I would be interested. Thanks for the invite!

We played Sunday at the Hermitage - they only had the front nine of General’s opened - man that was a slog. I heard today that President’s is still closed. Supposed to play there Friday, but not really looking forward to the mush.

I still have the one spot at Legacy if anyone is in at 10am Friday. I called them and they said the course is looking fine after all the rain here recently. Guy on the phone was anticipating being off cart path only by the weekend…

If Strapped came to Nashville, where would they play? I think Ted Rhodes is an obvious first choice due to the history, price and overall it is a cool course when it is not underwater on the back. As for other options, Shelby is probably in the conversation since it is so old and has dealt with some adversity in the last few years with the shooting and then the tornado but I think Two Rivers is just a better course. Would they just play another municipal? I feel like the people at Harpeth Hills are such d*cks that they wouldn’t let them film or something. Hermitage seems a bit expensive for strapped. I would have said Franklin Bridge because I like what they are doing but their fees are approaching Hermitage now. Vinny Links and Percy are cute but not “real” golf courses. The State Parks (Montgomery Bell, Henry Horton) are really beautiful at certain times of the year and probably make sense if the boys are willing to drive a bit. Anyways, for the end of this thought experiment I will say:

Ted Rhodes (should get the most time of any of the courses)
Shelby (again, probably has the best story as it is the oldest public course and the golf is probably secondary)
Montgomery Bell (just a really nice walk in the woods but probably not where you want to have the money round, tough course the first time)

As for places they would eat/visit, I have lived here all my life but I am not really a foodie. However, if they went to Hattie B’s I would be incredibly annoyed. That place has stolen all of the valor from Prince’s (RIP) and Bolton’s and commercialized it to the point of non-recognition. I used to go to Elliston Place Soda Shop as a kid so I would shout them out.

I’ve thought about this. Great post.

I’d say. Vinny Links has to be considered. The TGJ article about the greens being the designs of Donald Ross that were to be used on a course that never got build is great.

Little Course with tour of the Golf House also in the mix.

Maybe the Harpeth Valley Golf Center.

All I’m thinking of a little par 3 courses. Nashville sucks for public golf.

Food - Rotiers would have been a good spot. #rip

Browns Diner would also have been perfect. #rip

Bobby’s Dairy Dip??

McCabe Pub after playing the course would be good.

I’m realizing how much I hate new Nashville.

On the Prince’s Hattie Bs discussion, I could not disagree more. Princes could have totally dominated but they refused to get a convenient location for years and they refuse to do boneless tenders. Did Hattie Bs copy the flavor? Of course they did!! So did everyone else. But back in the day someone invented Buffalo style wings and now look what’s happened with that.

Hattie Bs makes great chicken. So what if they have multiple locations? Prince’s is in Los Angeles now.

Montgomery Bell definitely feels like a Strapped course.

Glad to see some love from Roitiers as I agree that would have been a great spot. Not sure how it has been since COVID but Arnold’s is great too.

I much prefer Nashville’s Meat and 3 scene compared to the hot chicken seen since it has been so overdone. Fast food joints and restaurants all over the country now have Nashville hot chicken on their menu.
