Roll Call - MN contingent? (Part 1)

well, 2nd swing has some good stuff, LOTS of OEM head covers and other accessories.

2nd swing is the closest thing I can think of right now. I thought of the Superstore but its basically a Mega Golf Galaxy with better cosmetics. Either way, looks like I gotta go to the West Side.

You can find some good deals on 2ndswing.com for apparel and super fast shipping. The couple times my wife and I have ordered its been on the weekend and usually ships Monday and arrives Tuesday. Prices already marked down and usually an extra 30-50% off. Its random sizing and shit but some hidden gems can be found.

Some of the pro shops at private or upper-tier public will carry good/niche brands and they don’t usually logo everything.

If you are on the west side, GolfUSA in Eden Prairie is an option. Maybe not a great one, but an option nonetheless.

A buddy of mine just asked if my big bucket was a William Murray hat because the logos are similar when viewed from a distance.

Sounds like I will going to a 2nd Swing today.

I guess my question was more pointed in search of a local golf shop and I did a terrible job framing it haha. Like during the beginning of the pandemic there was a push to stop going to large franchises and instead go to local places. - Example) Stop ordering from Dominos Pizza and go pay a little extra to support the local place down the street (Shoutout to West St Paul Pizza Shop)

To my knowledge there is no place like that in the cities. If someone knows of a place, slide into my DMs.

I’m afraid they’ve all gone out of business over the years.

I’m sure it was owned by a larger organization, but I used to love going to Nevada Bob’s.

I’ll also throw my hat in the ring for 2nd Swing. They are still a “chain,” albeit a small one, but they do great work. Over the years I’ve built a relationship with a couple guys at the Minneapolis store in particular, and they’re the best in the biz.

I’ve got three slots open at Stoneridge this Saturday at 7:30 am if anyone’s interested in playing.

To all the MN haters of Superior National:

Can someone explain to me what I’m missing about The Classic at Madden’s? Played it Friday and was unimpressed. I’m confused why it’s considered a top course in MN. Out of the courses I’ve played behind it on the Golf Digest ranking list, I would put The Wilderness, and StoneRidge head and shoulders above it

Anyone else going to be at the MN State Open this week?? I’m carrying the sticks for my old HS golf coach.

It’s an abomination and should be bulldozed. Passing on Doak for a guy that had never built a course previously is unforgiveable.

Centerline pine trees are dope though.

I guess I’m biased, as my lady works for Madden’s, so I get crazy discounted rates, but I love The Classic. That being said, I do think it gets a bit too much praise. I’d for sure put The Wilderness above it, and I’d probably put Deacon’s above it as well.

I said it last time I played there that I think it’s the kind of course where you need a certain amount of game to really hang. There’s a lot of demanding shots and you’re also handcuffed at certain spots. Like 5 and 6 back to back take driver out of your hands. However, there’s a handful of holes that I really love there. 4 is one of my favorite holes in the state and 8 is an absolute gem. 16 is also a super cool downhill par 5.

All of that being said, if I dropped $160, or whatever the current rack rate is, and was expecting a Top 100 public course experience, I might leave disappointed.

Such a shame they passed on Doak. It would’ve been his first solo design, right? How sick would it have been to have that a couple hours away?! Can’t wait for his short course at SV.

Looks like it would have been his 6th course or so (his first opened in 1989 and the Classic opened in 1997).

That was likely the only shot we had for getting a Doak course, I just don’t know where else he’d do one here. I’m overly excited to see what he does at SV, the delay is killing me.

That’s the boat our group was in. It was our first Brainerd golf experience and I think we all had high expectations, and it was an absolute grind for the higher handicaps

Any course I have played in Brainerd, I have felt this way. Gotta kind of hand it to the Brainerd area for banding together and doing a great marketing job.

This is where I think Deacons separates itself from the rest of the courses. It’s definitely the most high cap friendly of any of the big name courses in the area.
