A good ranking in spirit of @BaxterMSP looking for something to rank in 2021 would be to breakout the metro in sections, rank the top 3-5 public and private in each area and then figure out overall ranking. You mention south metro being terrible but when I use to live in Maple Grove the golf seemed miserable within 20 minutes besides Rush Creek.
100%. Throw in Legends GC, Wilds, Meadows at Mystic and Ridges at Sand Creek and it’s really not that bad. Braemar isn’t that far either.
If we are counting stuff just outside the immediate metro, then I will throw in Willingers as well. Long drive but if you are in Lakeville, not that bad.
The East metro dominates on the public side and the West metro dominates on the private side. North and South are in the middle somewhere for both.
I grew up in Eagan also.
I have yet to hear anything really good about BC, or Southview. I don’t know anything about Northfield CC. Southern hills is fine but doesn’t compare to the East and West metro public courses .
I did not like Willingers at ALL. Place is underwater, some of the holes are a bit ridiculous, and the horseflys are straight up mean.
Meadows and legends are solid but the price tag is a bit much to be every round playable.
North is a tough scene unless you count Keller in the North not the East
Oh I am not saying any of those country clubs are outstanding. I just think that is where the majority of the golfers in that area play. Not enough money left to support a slightly speedier, nicer public option. Just a theory though… no evidence
I agree the East is best for public and definitely last for depth of private. I also agree the South isn’t that bad if you are willing to travel a little. What would be the north side’s best public and private course? Would WBYC considered north or east?
WBYC is east imo,
id say wbyc is east. north? are we are talking victory links, bunker hills, dare i say …majestic…, northfolk?
edit: just for locale sake, certainly not on THE LIST
Guess we have to get the map out and draw lines to determine what is East/West v North/South
I put WBYC as East.
North’s best public, maybe Edinburgh? Private maybe TPC or North Oaks?
Ya definitely and would even argue you need inside the 494/694 loop and outside quadrants to really split it up.
Good call on Edinburgh!
This is a factual statement
If Edinburgh is your top that is rough in the ranking. I would go Rush Creek west side, Legends on the South and Stoneridge on the East. I think Edinburgh is a tier below.
I’d take Northfork in the north over Edinburgh
I would disagree with this. Neither of these are in the top tier of private courses in the metro, but we’re ridiculously spoiled around here. 3 Raynors (well, 2 1/2 I guess), 4 Ross courses (again, 2 1/2), a Tillinghast, the go to venue for PGA majors and that’s before we even get to Windsong, Edina CC, Wayzata, North Oaks, etc.
Both Brackett’s and Southview are very good courses, they’re just not great.
Also, it’s bullshit that Eagan doesn’t have a private club. Complete oversight on the part of the meatpackers who lived here 90-100 years ago.
North Oaks by a country mile.
My personal goal for 2021, sell enough houses to join North Oaks, I’m so damn close to it.
