Roll Call: Minnesota Part 2 - SIM MEETUP post 9471

Hey fellow nesters, I am looking into possibly getting lessons (1-3 sessions) was curious if anyone has any suggestions on teachers? How much do they usually cost? Is it better to do lessons indoors? Outdoors? Doesn’t matter (a hooks a hook whether its indoors or outdoors)? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I live outnl in Woodbury so the closer the better.

Bobka referred me to Jeff Otto out at Bluff Creek but that’s the opposite side of the earth from you.

I don’t have any teacher rec’s - but on the indoor vs. outdoor, I guess it kind of depends what you want to get out of it in a sense - the following is just my opinion and experience of course.

If you are thinking of making broad/overarching swing corrections/positions then I would lean indoor since in many cases they will hook you up to the sensors and such to view your plane, rotation/turn, movement etc etc etc, to view the main points that they would “correct”. And since you’re making larger changes- consistent ball contact etc isn’t the main focus yet so seeing a screen is good enough.

If you are more in a spot of “I like my swing, I’m not looking for a large overhaul, just some minor tweaks” then outdoor is probably better - no substitute for hitting off grass to see how those smaller changes affect flight, turf interaction, etc. Plus, with video quality now and trackman you will still get a good look at positions etc.

In either case - 2-3 sessions is not a lot, so the biggest factor is going to be your own dedication - they will give you lots of drills, things to look for in stills/videos - the overall effectiveness comes down to you sticking to those drills and monitoring your own videos after the fact.

I’ve taken some lessons from Peter Maki with Brent Snyder’s team and liked his teaching style. Teach out at Troy Burne in the summer but pretty sure winter location is in Bayport now.

Depending on what type of vibe you’re looking for I took 6 lessons a couple of years ago with Aaron Jacobson at Rush Creek. He works with a lot of college and high school golfers. Again on the other side of the planet as Woodbury. I enjoyed Aaron’s teaching style for minor adjustments in my game. In terms of indoor and outdoor, I did a mix coming out of winter into spring. I really enjoyed the indoor lessons with the software they had at Rush Creek. Rush creek has the bay/ garage style with ability to hit into a screen or outside. They had both down the line and head on camera angles with the ability to draw in lines on replays and stills. They also use GC Quad which I enjoyed for club path and face data. For me being analytical getting the data and connecting the data to what the camera sees vs my feels greatly improved my game. I also had lesson outdoors ranging from short game, wedges, irons, and driver and I will say I was mainly relying on him and the feels I had.

I think generally for 1 hour lessons your probably looking anywhere from $80-$120 for an hour depending on where you go

I used to caddie up there. Late July that place could be spicy

I haven’t been myself yet, but I’ve heard it’s hard to figure out the first time through. Can’t imagine how hard it’ll be if it’s baked out. I’d like to find out!

if you do get a chance to play, rule of thumb on the greens: it’ll break toward the lift bridge/canal park even (especially) if it looks flat

Being in Woodbury, you could check in with John Potter. He is the head of instruction at Prestwick. I know him outside of golf, and haven’t personally taken lessons with him but every Interactions I have had with him has been great.

Alright y’all, let’s get this Landmand lottery going.

As it sits, we have 5 tee times (1:20, 1:40, 2:00, 2:20, 2:40) on Wednesday, May 24th. We also have a spot for one additional golfer in the 1:00 tee time which was graciously donated by @OnlyLayingUp.

I think it only makes sense that those of us who actually secured tee times (myself, @loosh, and @GRWhitehead) should automatically be on the roster. After subtracting the 3 of us and adding the 1 additional slot, we have 18 open spots and - no kidding - 19 names. So one unlucky SOB has to stay home.

I’m going to put the names into a random draw website and, rather than pull 18 names, I’m gonna pull one. Seem fair?

Maybe, before we ruin somebody’s day/week/month, we should ask @GRWhitehead to ask his boy if we can have one fivesome?

I say we let chaos reign and destroy a soul (hopefully not mine) and then check on that later.

I mean what are the chances someone doesn’t need to drop out between now and then? I have a feeling we will need a person or two come nut cutting time.
