Roll Call: Michigan - golf szn returns?

Maybe we were just scarred from Treetops, where security was over the top with giving us somewhat of a hard time and then we show up to Garland and head of security (Roach) couldn’t have been a nicer guy and encouraged us to have our fun in the evenings. Restaurant staff and food readiness was miles ahead of our dinner experiences at Treetops too.

Been to Garland a couple of times and while there is water on 16 or so holes on one of the courses it doesn’t come in to play nearly as much as it would seem.

Is there food at Garland? And do they try to kick you out at 10pm when you just finished golfing at 9pm and they are the only food option for miles around? (Looking at you Treetops)

Send me a DM so I know which one of the guys from my group is also a poster on here…

No but seriously, this happened to us way too many times in the first few years at Treetops so we just started ordering pizza from downtown Gaylord and had it delivered to Treetops. Oh and don’t even think about bringing your own portable tailgate grills, setting up shop in the middle of nowhere on the resort away from everything, and cooking your own food. They’ll try and shut that down quickly.

This year at Garland we ordered a bunch of pizzas around lunch hour for pickup in the evening, could not have been a more simple process and they were some good pies!

The Main Lodge at Garland has a restaurant/bar that is really solid and stays open pretty late. Have been there twice and had a great experience. The servers did a great job with our “well lubricated” group. The golf cottages have their own grills and kitchens if you wanted to cook on your own.

Additionally, you could go 10-15 min to the local Lewiston Bar. You would likely be in for an adventure doing that.

Stemming off this golf resort topic, has anyone done Gull Lake before? Have my annual buddies trip going there in late June. Wanted to see what we could encounter.

Yes. In 2019. Hopefully you are playing stoatin brae and Stonehenge north. Thought those two were by far the best two.

We are playing 5 out of the 6 courses. Only one we won’t play is Bedford Valley.

Just played Wolf River and Champion Hill for the first time last week and I loved both and can’t wait to get back. Pinecroft is great too.

My feelings/vibes were:
Wolf River - Mines/Diamond Springs/Loop
Champion Hill - Stoatin Brae/Hawks Head/Greywalls without the rock outcroppings
Pinecroft - typical gritty Up North feel

Wolf River growing in good? I’m hoping to get to it in August when I have a conference at Crystal Mountain. I really wish they would get a liquor license and/or a driving range.

What kind of shape was Pinecroft in? I remember thinking Champion Hill was a little better taken care of the last time I was there (2022).

Wolf River was in great shape overall. A couple tee-boxes were a bit scruffy but nothing to complain about.

ChampHill was definitely in better shape than Pinecroft. Greens at Pinecroft were great. A few rough spots but nothing that would take away from the experience

We are going for our second year in a row late June. 20th -23rd. See you there?

Both years we bought their black friday deal. $240ish for 6 rounds of golf. One round at each course. Staff is top notch even if you are not staying on site. They pretty much stay out of your way while golfing. Super courteous in the pro shop and restaurants. Last year we had one member of our group who didn’t get in on the black friday deal. Each course gave him the same discount as the rest of us anyway. They totally didn’t have to, and he didn’t ask for it. Big points to them for doing that. Lodging on site is limited so we chose to get an airbnb just down the road which was much cheaper than resort lodging. There is a restaurant at each course, East/West, North/South share.

Only complaint was at Stoatin and this was nit picking…We got rained out on the 17th hole. We all rushed inside and figured we would grab a drink from the bar while we waited out the storm. They closed the whole bar down because they had a wedding and wouldn’t let anyone in. So, there were 30 guys standing in their pro shop, which is not big enough for 30 people. This year they opened up a new restaurant so hopefully that’s improved.

Had the 24 man annual A.S.S. Open (Annual Summer Strokeoff) trip this past weekend. 8th year running and we’ve gone to a different ‘resort’ each year. Went to Tullymore this year. If you play a mega slice…DO NOT PLAY SAINT IVES! Location was convenient but losing 20 golf balls was not. Thankful for Saint Rappeo and Costco 36 pack Bud Lites. Tough to compare against the past 3 years of Garland, Shanty Creek, and Treetops. But as always Michigan public golf continues to stunt on the nation.

Please elaborate.

I have an 11-day solo golf trip coming up in July, spread across some Midwest states (Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana). The trip starts in Michigan and I have a few questions about the courses I have not been able to book yet. The Michigan itinerary plan is as follows;

Saturday (7/20) – The Loop (AM) & Forest Dunes (PM)
Sunday (7/21) – Belvedere*
Monday (7/22) – Arcadia Bluffs (AM) & South Course (PM)
Tuesday (7/23) – Pilgrim’s Run* (AM) & Diamond Springs (PM)

Belvedere and Pilgrim’s Run are not yet booked, as their public windows are not open yet for Mid-July.

  • With Belvedere, does anyone know what their weekend availability is typically like for the summer?
  • With Pilgrim’s Run & Belvedere, it does not appear they let you book as a solo online. Anyone know what their policy is on singles?

Thank you very much for any help.

Belvedere to my understanding has public tee time blocks during in preferred times. Seems very easy to book.

So I ended up winning passes to Sunday at the Rocket Mortgage in the Maxamania raffle (thanks @CarlyRaeJepsenFan). Decided to make a whole weekend of it by heading to Grand Rapids for some golf Friday/Saturday with @cussingmussel. We booked foursomes for Saturday, June 29, at the Mines at 7:36am and at Diamond Springs at 2:30. Would love to fill out the other two spots in both tee times with fellow Nesticles. Anyone interested in joining us for either or both tee times? Also, any recommendations for where to eat/drink/stay/visit during our short time in Grand Rapids would also be appreciated.
