Roll Call - Melbourne golfers!

It’s really not. Not for the golf anyway.

If you were on Hammo and fancied a day driving a cart, hitting shots, enjoying views and drinking beers, you’re gonna have a great time. But it’s not worth going their for the purpose of playing golf.

I have some very sad news: Frankies is goneski. I think the building is being redeveloped. That place was the greatest. It was our after work drinks spot and even at 5pm it was a great hang.

I mean the Blue Mountains are decent, and I guess some sort of game/experience at the Olympic stadium (how the F*CK was that 20 years ago?!) aside, it’s absolutely this. I lived in Ashfield (inner West) for 6 months and that was plenty far enough.

Can’t really argue too much with that list! Would potentially argue for 2 rounds at Cape Wickham but not sure what I’d knock off to replace it (maybe Woodlands or Frankston, although I’ haven’t played either).

Also agree with the general consensus that Lonsdale is probably a touch high on that list at 20 having played a fair chunk of the top 20. It’s a great, fun course, but would probably place all 5 below it above it, and also The Dunes.

I grew up in Houston (lived total of 22 years) and have lived in Melbourne on and off past 10 years.

Been to Sydney too many times to count. Your comparison seems to be a bit of a stretch (food, culture, weather, economy), but I have also not traversed too many times to the Western Suburbs of Sydney. Houston is indeed suburban sprawl, but the diversity and food scene in Houston is so unique that I cannot see it as a fitting comparison to Sydney. Also, Houston is a flat swamp while Sydney seems to have quite a bit of rolling terrain. It is hard to take out the views that Sydney has to offer (looking out at the harbour offers one of the best skylines in the world IMO), whereas Houston is indeed a concrete jungle with some of the worst traffic in the country. Sydney might need a few 20 lane highways (like Houston) to alleviate some of their traffic woes.

I am all for the fact that I have enjoyed living in Melbourne (and believe it is the more ‘liveable’ city pre-covid, but truly enjoy visiting Sydney a few times a year).

YMMV

Definitely will do two rounds at Cape Wickham as hard to get to and looks fantastic.

yeah that’s all really fair to say. i still wouldn’t trade Houston’s food and culture scene for Sydney’s views, gotta say…

my commute out to GWS was made at my own hand, and I’m not really holding it against sydney, just stating that it reminds me of the endless drives i had to make going from West Richmond up to Kingwood out in Houston, just never ending time in the car.

and I will say this, Aussies are even more pleasant than my native Texans, on a personal every day level, which is saying something truly great about you guys on the the other side of the world. never met abad bloke in Sydney.

We can definitely agree that the uniqueness/diversity/fusion of the Houston food scene is something that cannot be easily replicated, even in Sydney.

Does anyone wanna modify the Top 20 list above?

Two loops of one course is all NSW golf gets says a fair bit about the course quality up there vs what the southern states offer.

I mean sand belt golf is probably the most uniquely Australian style of golf there is - that being said I think Royal Canberra gets slept on a little bit after the OCM renovations, can definitely feel the sand belt inspiration from those fellas and all put into an old arboretum for some beautiful parkland vibes, really would recommend for anyone visiting the nations capital

Noooooo! where are we going to go on a Tuesday night after a world cup qualifier?

Anyone got more info about this: Chemical mix-up reportedly leaves greens at prestigious golf course in need of repair

I played both courses a week ago - could prove to be good timing.

Not great.

Wow, just shows that even at the best courses in the world, mistakes can happen.

:grimacing: whilst that is pretty bad for the RM members, hope also it doesn’t affect the sandy Links putting green too much which has only just opened.
