Roll Call: Massachusetts

Plymouth might have the best concentration of golf in the state. Obviously you’ve got Old Sandwich which has an argument for best overall, but it has great public tracks too. Pinehills is solid, I really liked Waverly Oaks, and I’ve heard Crosswinds is good too. Southers Marsh is also a delightful short course built around a cranberry bog that I would highly recommend playing during the fall harvest. I spent a weekend in an AirBnb there last summer and had a wonderful time.

I live 5 minutes from the Waverly/Crosswinds complex and play them both quite a bit, Southers too. The guys who own Southers are the best. I’m in for a refuge outing any time in Plymouth.

Just played Pinehills Nicklaus on Sunday as well. What a blast. The pin placements were brutal though. Loved being able to hit a driver off most holes and they had one of the best collection of Par 3s that I can remember.

Learned how to play on Southers Marsh. Love that course.

@Sladeplugins Good to know on Wentworth, thanks! I’m not in love with target golf, but will put it on the list of ones to try it out one early morning sometime soon.

Just noticed your note on times during the week. I’d definitely be down, playing as a single early in the morning is great if the course is empty but brutal if you’re behind a threesome/foursome.

I went last year and I guess I assumed that it was a fluke that it was in OK shape. Had heard the same thing that they brought over the Glen Ellen grounds guy but wasn’t sure about the truth to that. As much as I complain, it’ll still be in my rota this year because it’s close

Yeah I can see what you’re getting at if you want to bomb through quick. Hopedale does have some early times that might work for you.

Beautiful weekend is here and looks like one hell of a PGA championship. Where’s everyone teeing it up this weekend? Luckily I got an eeeaaarly Sunday AM tee time at Green Hill Muni and then a full day of watching golf and chasing my 7 month old around.

Nice. I’m hitting Southers Marsh on Sunday. First time I’ve been out there this year and very excited to put my new blades to the test

I’ve got no golf planned, but will be chasing an 8 month old around and spending all day watching the PGA. So, we’ve got that in common! Hit em straight

Anyone have recommendations for a nice. but not absurdly expensive, course in the Sandwich, Barnstable area? A friend is staying on the Cape next week and looking to play. All the courses I know are much farther out.

Old Barnstable would be my recommendation.

I’d second the suggestion for Old Barnstable. Every time I’ve played it conditions have been decent to good, and there are some fun holes.

The first hole is pretty tough too so don’t judge it based just on that. There are some WILD greens that are really fun too. It’s not anything mind blowing but it’s a fun track that will be in good shape.

Cape munis are great - most towns have at least one and many have two. Staying in Barnstable (and per above) Old Barney is a no brainer. It’s always in good shape, but a very easy walk too. It can be a long round on weekends, but next week shouldn’t be bad at all. Probably my favorite public on the Cape. Also, not sure if they’re open, but they do a nice job for a post round burger and beer at the restaurant there.

The only other thing I would recommend as a “must play” in that area would be Cape Cod Country Club. Just so many fun holes and the course is likely closing after next season, so worth making the drive to Falmouth. If willing to drive 45 minutes, then there are some other interesting options (I am partial to Bass River, but the Dennis courses, Bayberry, Captains, etc. are all courses I enjoy)

Lastly, if he wants to do something funky in Barnstable, Cotuit Highgrounds is an old school 9 holer that has a lot of uniqueness to it

Highgrounds and Kettle Ho. Elite combo.
