Roll Call: Maryland

This piques my interest. I’m a member at Rolling Road in Catonsville and I’m not quite at the level to play with the travel team. Its a great play every day kind of course. It gets us access to other clubs as well (with some planning ahead).

I have a theory that that place will be houses inside of 5 years, sad to say.

I had the same theory 20 years ago… And 10… And 5. There must be something with the zoning, or the fact that there are stream buffers and electrical rights of way through there, or maybe the family just wants to hold out. Eventually I’m sure it’ll happen though… Unless i hit the jackpot tonight

Pretty epic long shot here…anyone ever heard of Swan Creek Country Club? I’m trying to find a picture of the logo, or better yet a pic of a scorecard from there. Place closed in like 2008 or so up in Havre de Grace area in Harford County. Used to play there a ton when I was in high school, and I’m working on a project for my Dad’s birthday coming up where I’m going to do the course layout in the Lie+Loft style.

I may or may not even put the holes/yardages/logo on there but I’m more just curious.

Loved getting that email. No longer have to explain to everyone how we do not use GHIN in MD.

Great gift idea for your dad.

Using the Way Back Machine, you can see their website which has a lot of info and photos, but I couldn’t find the logo. https://web.archive.org/web/20061118155915/http://www.swancreekgolf.com/?a=center

Also, there is a Facebook listing where there are a few people sharing photos and memories. It might be worth reaching out to them to see if they can dig up an old scorecard or something that has the logo.Swan Creek Golf and Country Club - Havre de Grace, MD - Golf Course & Country Club, Country Club / Clubhouse | Facebook

Ha, pretty awesome. Somehow I’ve never heard of the Way Back Machine.

My dad has the teebox sign from hole 5 in his office, definitely a throwback to see a couple more of them over at the Facebook link! Was a fun course for sure, still had some of the best greens I’ve played.

Some image searches turned up an old scorecard from the 60s. Looks like they’re from an old ebay listing, and you might have already seen these:

OK now this is awesome. So the course was built in 1954, and there was an original routing. I have no idea what this routing looked like (didn’t join here til like 2004) but I do know the 10th hole was originally a par 4, that was then converted into a par 3. From the looks of this card though, almost all of the holes were redone. Too bad that ebay listing ended or I totally would have bought that, lol.

Here’s where I’m starting out with the layout on this one…I decided to make a blacked out version first so if I wanted I could make multiple copies by just tracing over it. Just mocked it up with printer paper for a draft but will definitely do the final on something better. Figured after I made my Dad’s I’d probably make one for myself too. I’ll probably join the Nest at some point but for now this is the only pic I can post…

After moving back down from PA last April I’m looking at club options. I live in Towson so there are a number of options reasonably close. I wanted to see if there was some insights/comparisons.

Must have a very active weekend men’s group and weeknight leagues. The club in PA I am still a member at will get 25-35 people almost every Saturday and Sunday morning. Needs to be a walkable course with good range. Also I prefer no tee times but I’m flexible on that one if I have to be.

Looking at the following and open to other suggestions.

CC of MD
Eagles Nest
Hayfields
Elkridge
Woodholme

Gracias.

I’m not a member, but Elkridge is an incredible course.

May not be on the same caliber, but Rolling Road has a solid weekend game scene and is walkable and doesn’t do tee times. Doesn’t currently have a range but they are doing some restorations with plans to add one.

Elkridge and CCofMD are closest to my house. I’ve heard good things about them both but also heard they’re shorter and I wouldn’t be able to hit driver much at either course.

The competition is what is most important though.

I was paired last week with a guy who, when I asked him about Elkridge said “I hate that place. I’m catholic and they hate Catholics. They are terrible people”. Later he mentioned how good Woodholme’s course was, “but I’d never join there, too many (slang term for Jewish people)”. He was a BCC member but didn’t like BCC either. I believe the guy should be on his own private island with his red hat. I bailed on him after 5 holes…couldn’t take the anger.

I got invited to play Elkridge last summer and you can get a vibe that it’s a stuffy place. My 2 hosts were great guys though and very laid back. The course was amazing minus the 2-3 non Raynor original holes. I think I hit driver a fair amount and I typically hit it 280ish I would say.

Can’t speak to CC of MD, haven’t ever been there before

You won’t find anywhere without tee times. Elkridge is solid, but definitely a little quirkier (although Raynor is fun). Old school feel over there and a meh range.

CC of Maryland is a good track (redid greens a year or two ago), but also has some quirks. I think the crowd out there is a solid crew, but not sure what kind of weekend games are.

From what I know, most places just have tee times versus the pros setting up games. Of the places you mentioned Elkridge and CCmd are best.

I went out to OC before X-mas and played Man-O-War the first day, then Rum Pointe the next two days since it was so much better. Man-O-War was ok, a couple holes were swamps with all the rain they’ve had, but no Rum Pointe. And Rum Pointe is only $40 or so in the winter. Went again in mid January before my back surgery and Rum Pointe wouldn’t let me go off first before a big group so I went and played War Admiral, hated that place, long hikes between green and tee and it was more of a swamp than Man-O-War. Rum Pointe is one of the easiest courses to walk I’ve seen in a while.

$40 for the winter…hold on a sec while I make a tee time. :joy:
