Roll Call: Maryland

Just joined the refuge and I wasn’t sure what to expect… now I know I’m in good company lol. Moving back home in the next couple months and would love to find some new people to play with in the spring.

Welcome! If you’re looking for answers to all of your wildest questions the refuge is the place. If you’re looking for the correct answer to those questions you’re in the wrong place. Where do you normally play in MD?

Just joined as well! I see you’re a Terp! I live in the College Park area and am always down to play UMD (or anywhere for that matter)

Anyone have any good recommendations in the Baltimore area for club refurbishing/restoration? Looking to get a set of classic blades refurbished and paint filled.

@KIDDfen Thanks man! Been listening to NLU for a couple years now, so it’s about time. I was very lucky growing up, I learned to play at Columbia CC. Now I’m a little too old to be grifting off my parents, so when I can’t get my dad to take me out at Columbia I’ll play the moco courses. Sligo, Falls Road, RedGate, etc. I haven’t been local since high school though, excited to be back and explore the golf scene a little bit more down here. I live in the Boston area and it’s a pretty short season up here lol

@Pasco Ha unfortunately I’m not actually a Terp, just a big fan. I was 7 when the '02 team won the natty and been a fan ever since. Would love to play MD though, I’ve heard great things about it but never been out there. I’ll give you a shout in the spring!

My friend, I have bad news.

I see its closed down. Even if it wasn’t, last time I was there, it was in REALLY rough shape. Layout seemed fun enough, but it barely functioned as a golf course.

Anyone else as excited as me for this to open in May?

Wow, that looks incredible.

Reading has never been a specialty of mine, I can’t find when the reno is expected to be complete. Anyone know?

Pretty sure that the renovation is pretty close to complete aside from installing cart paths, but they’re just letting turf mature for the May 1, 2021 opening.

Turf reno was done late summer but they did extensive stream restoration and re did the cart paths that took longer than expected. So they pushed opening until next May.

They also got the former super from Chartwell running things now.

Played Woodmont last Friday and OH MY was it a treat. I was honestly pretty stunned with the green complexes and bunkering. I came in with low expectations and was blown away. Anyone else played it since the restoration?

FTFY

In all seriousness- I know it’s a bummer when any course closes, but I was not a fan of Redgate. It had some cool holes, undulations, and small greens, but overall it was quirky- especially after that renovation late in its life. Regardless, there’s still lots of good golf in that area.

Actually in agreement on everyone’s Red Gate thoughts. It was trash. It’s funny though, if they’d have just hung in there for another few months they’d have caught the COVID boom and likely had had some options, whether to stay the fight or try to maybe improve a bit. But fate decided.

I have and thought it was awesome.

The Par 3 sixth might be my favorite - great movement. It was a bit soggy when I played, but I imagine in the middle of the summer you might have to bounce one way off the right and run it down. Nine is pretty dirty also. Only a few weak holes out there in my opinion.

I did a google maps look a few days ago and it doesn’t look like they changed too much in terms of routing/strategy. I hope they did more than fix the drainage and paths and take out bunkers. If you’re going to shut it down that long then create something different and special. Judging by what they spent I’m not sure how much they actually did.

I loved 2 miles from it for 7 years and played there a lot but it wasn’t a memorable course.

Thanks for the memories, Refuge.

Don’t know about y’all, but my club’s tee sheet has been INSANE. Have to set an alarm for 7am 3 days out and everything before noon is gone by 7:05 (for Sat and Sun).

They just sent out an email yesterday announcing they have shortened it to 10 min intervals, starting tee times at 8am now, and no guests Fri-Sun. Hopefully that helps.
