Guest-starring a handsome lefty?
Not this lefty, unfortunately. I actually haven’t been out to BCN at all this year which I’m kind of ashamed to say.
Tuff scene with a big left (and long) miss.
Relevant pod for everyone here.
I just hit play and came to post this.
I’ve lived in KC my entire life (38 years) and played Hillcrest for the first time last Friday. Shame on me for not getting out there until now. I really enjoyed it. Great setting and the greens and bunkers were in great shape. It’s not perfect but it seems as if they put the little money they have to the things that matter which is the golf course. I’ll definitely go back.
Hillcrest has the potential to be the best course in all of KC. Even if Swope was restored, I think Hillcrest just has a bigger “frame” on it with which to build upon. It’s been a bit messed up over time, but I still think just the execution and presentation of the course is needed, not a reroute or anything.
100% agreed.
Right about the 45 minute mark, Garrett asks Andy a question I sorta kinda asked on here (and even described the kind of person this question would come from and that nearly described exactly who I am): “How is it that you can go to these courses…and notice the great things about the design?” I am so glad he asked this because I am genuinely excited to get back out to the course and play it again after not enjoying it the last time around.
Andy’s answer had a lot to do with green placement and contouring within the pretty ridiculous landscape the course is on, then also made a comment on how severe the sloping is off tee shots that there really doesn’t need to be fairway bunkers.
Anyways, really glad they did that podcast because I never felt like I fully appreciated Swope and couldn’t really find someone to help me look for the brilliance in it.
Enjoyed this, albeit fairly short compared to the other course they talked about. Highlighted some nice parts of the course. Even enjoyed the fact that they through in Hillcrest shoutout also.
I think half the purpose of these course focused podcasts are to gather audio to overlay with an upcoming video.
Just talking about a golf course doesn’t translate in podcast form that well, but put it over the top of a short video and it makes much more sense.
I enjoyed it, laughed pretty hard hearing him describe 17’s cart path not gonna lie
This was actually a selling point for me once upon a time. Prob for the best tbh
Embrace debate. Been through this thread before, but never really seen a definitive ranking of public courses in KC, I do know everyone’s opinion is different but based on what I’ve played I think I’d have to go:
- Shoal Creek
- WinterStone
- Adams Pointe
- Swope Memorial
- DubsDread
- Sycamore Ridge
- Hillcrest
- Fred Arbanas
- Eagles Landing
- Falcon Lakes
I don’t count Creekmoor, it would be near the top but it really is more private than public. I have not played St. Andrews or the Sykes/Lady Courses or Stone Canyon. If all I considered was layout, Swope would be #1, I truly love the course but have to consider conditioning and I don’t think there is a public course in KC as consistently in great shape as Adams Pointe or Winterstone. I think Shoal has a really good layout and is usually in solid shape. I was thinking about keeping these in the immediate metro area so within 30 minutes or so.
Best Par 5: #9 at Shoal Creek or #9 at Winterstone
Best Par 4: # 14 at Swope or #12 at Arbanas
Best Par 3: #1 at Hillcrest or #8 at Adams Pointe
Really wish Dubs, Adams, Shoal or Winterstone were closer to where I live in OP. I’d play them a ton more if so.
I enjoy these exercises. I can only comment on the ones i have played, so here goes:
- Ironhorse
- Hillcrest
- Swope
- Tiffany Greens
- Stone Canyon
- Drumm Farm
- Deer Creek (not now, when they actually took care of it)
- Minor Park

99. Teetering Rocks (

Heart shaped greens can be fun i guess…
I’d include Ironhorse above a couple of the courses listed here. It’s probably not a great value with what they charge a lot of the time, but just looking at the course, it’s tough to beat. 18 there has potential in the best par-4 category even if it’s a bit of a ball buster.
If I didn’t play where I do, I would get a season pass at a couple of places, Ironhorse being one of them.
