there is no zoysia on the golf course. the fairways are rye, but spots thin out over the season so they aerate and overseed the tues/wed right after labor day every year.
same as courses in the KC area are overseeding fescue/bluegrass rough right now.
I seem to play from down there every time - perfect destination for my snap hook. It’s a little severe, but I think playable. Big walk up to the green, and I always curse my miss over there when making that hike.
checked another one off the list during the SLAT event at Leawood CC today. Somehow, I had never made it over here before.
It was an ok golf course. The proclivity for bunkers right at like the 260-280yd mark with fairways narrowing past that was annoying, and a couple holes on the back there are not good, but overall it was fine. I didn’t find it nearly as silly as The Duece, but the constant routing through houses and across streets significantly detracts from any sort of legitimate golf atmosphere.
I was there too. I enjoyed the course alright. 16 comes to mind as one of the not good holes on the back you might be referring to. Anything short of a perfect tee shot seem to keep you from having even a shot at getting on the green.
The front was more fun to play then the back to me. Back felt kinda suffocating. Would definitely play there again, just not be a member there. Kinda like the deuce since you put that comparison in my mind.
The rise in cost of everything might’ve made me too picky. You used to be able to justify the cost of private golf by playing enough. I feel like you have to solely play the course you’re a member at to do that now, so I try to look for something that’s the whole package which doesn’t exist. I dunno, as with most things in life the solution to this is to make more money. Guess I’ll just work on that
I’m not really sure what LCC charges, but I wouldn’t guess it is much. If it’s anything more than a few grand to get in the door, and $500/mo it’s too much.
I’m not saying you’ll “get your money’s worth” in rounds of golf, but to me the benefit of membership is flexibility of being able to show up and play or practice for a bit whenever you want, pace of play, and a group of people you know and become friends with.
I was up at Blue Hills hitting balls over lunch today, basking in the glory of September with my pants, polo, and vest on with nary another soul up there. The golf course wasn’t even very busy. I was grinding away, working on some changes and hoping to get into the SLAT Champ in Oct as the first alternate. It occurred to me just how messed up the KC golf demographic is.
Tournament season is basically over and people have mostly shut down on golf, when this is the best time of the year to play in my opinion. The course was packed pretty much 24x7 this year, regardless of 100+ deg temps. There probably averages 1-2 tournaments per week you could play in from May-Aug, they were all full, and there’s really only 1 or 2 left for the rest of the year when we’ve got 6 weeks of the best golf weather.
Leaves are changing, air and turf both get crispy, but people would rather play when outside feels like hot soup?
I guess I shouldn’t complain, just makes it easier for me to get on the course when I want to.
Oakwood was very busy this afternoon. I took a half day since the weather was so nice, and there were foursomes stacked from noon-2:00 after women’s league ended this morning.
Don’t worry, Swope has still been busy. But I definitely agree on this being the best time of the year to play golf. I’ll be out at Swope and Hillcrest all fall for sure and be able to walk em in around an hour and a half. Love it.
This is bar none the best time to be playing golf in KC. When I lived in OKC the rates would drop by half at a lot of courses once OU/OSU kicked off. It was a ghost town and it was awesome.
I feel like part of that is the busyness that comes with fall. Weddings, college football Saturdays, Chiefs on Sunday. I end up going to the range quite a bit during this time of year, same with spring, after work.
As far as tournaments go, I’ve had those same thoughts, but there are some other considerations:
Aerification schedules. Perfect weather for golf also equals perfect weather for plugging. Almost every course does it within the same window. You are either asking top courses not to do one of the most important maintenance practices or asking players to be pissed about green conditions.
Weather is unpredictable. I played in the Kansas Mid-Am a few years ago in Wichita (warmer weather than KC) and we had a snow delay.
Top players are back to school, HS or college. I’m not positive about KGA (I refuse to call it by its new stupid name). But the NGA does a lot with the girls golf during the fall, running regionals/state/etc.
