Roll Call: KC Area

It definitely won’t be crowded, so you’ll be able to watch right on the rope line. I’d say find a group that interests your for whatever reason, and watch them for 5-9 holes. Then hop over to the other side of the golf course and do the same thing. That should give you an idea of both how pros build their round, and an decent idea of the course. After that, if there’s a hole you particularly liked, park there, or bounce between groups around a few different holes that you liked. Out there, I think 13 green/14 tee/17 green/18 tee on the south end of the property is a decent spot to watch multiple groups come through. You’ve got a par 5 green with water short, a par 3 tee, a par 4 green, and a par 5 tee where everyone’s absolutely sending it all within 50 yards of each other.

Some people like to camp out in a spot, watch everybody come through, and have a few juice boxes. I, on the other hand, subscribe to Eric’s approach. And he’s got the right spot picked out for the best viewing of the best part of the course. I’m irritated that’s where they put the bleachers on the back because it messes up the sight lines, but…tour golf doesn’t give a shit about stuff like that.

The other spot I’d go is on the front is over by 4 tee, 3 green, and the approach into 1. You’ll have to move around a bit to see what you want, but it’s all close and you’ll see a long iron into 1, wedge into 3, and probably launching driver over the trees on 4. Also…it’s on top of the hill and should be “dry.” 2 tee is also close but you’ll have to be mindful of walking behind 3 green when guys are hitting the approach.

I don’t see any obvious groups to follow, but I think the back 9 is better than the front. There are some interesting groups around noon, but they’ve got them split up front/back so there won’t be a string of them coming through all at once. I kind of like the Saunders/Hardy/Haley group going off 10 at noon if you have to pick somebody to follow. You could walk with them down to the aforementioned 13/14/17/18 area, then park for a few groups, and follow somebody else the rest of the 9 or just go up 18. The worst holes on the course are 15/16 so you won’t miss much if you skip them.

Bring shoes that can be hosed off, or or can take the beating they’re going to get.

pre-game dump successful, let’s go.

If any refugees see me out there I want you to lean over to whoever is standing next to you and say, “there’s Derek Ackerman’s caddy, I hear he’s a good player in his own right.”

cheer for Derek, pray for @ericrbens .

Looks to be a pretty decent field this year. Weather seems good this weekend. May have to grab a ticket.

what a mess. course wouldn’t even be open to members in this.

We hosted a high school regional tournament this week and it was the same way. Luckily got a 5 hour window where we could play but there was standing water everywhere.

I almost can’t believe it, but I think this tournament is going to finish. The golf course is still mush, but it’s improving. Thank goodness for the wind. The greens are actually still really good.

Got much more comfortable with the whole thing today and actually feel like I did a pretty good job for it being my first time caddying. Need to work on my subtle negotiation skills.

Had to step off the bag for a conflict, but had a great experience.

Conditions still sloppy? My dad and I may be coming out tomorrow after lunch to watch.

it’s roped off kinda along the cart path anyway so it’s not too bad. I followed my guy for his first 6 holes after I had to give up the bag, and it was totally fine for viewing. It’s sloppy on course still for sure, but improving. I’m not going to say it’ll be good conditions by sunday, but maybe tolerable. There’s so much water the turf is literally floating, and it moves around under your feet like a waterbed in some places, particularly the tees.

Edit; I’m sitting here trying to do my real job, and I can’t stop thinking about how cool it was to get to be up close and involved with high level golf like that.

Thanks for the info. Some good intel so I can make the right decision on which shoes to wear.

Looks like we’ll be at or around the top-10 after 36. Despite the good play, I’m fucking wiped. 6:00 AM warm up, 4 holes to finish rd 1 starting at 7:00, 30 minutes of downtime before heading back out at 8:45, then finished the last hole at ~1:30. Made two mistakes so far. One didn’t matter. The other one probably cost a shot and was the first of a bad 4-hole stretch. Annoyed that bad momentum might be the difference between T10 and top-3, but it obviously could be worse.

I’m tired after 4 days of this and I didn’t even carry the 2nd round. I can’t imagine how beat you guys would be with that turn time and a PBJ to go.

It’s a tough walk out there. Keep it up and get yourself paid!

Observations from a random guy that was out there Friday morning to mid-afternoon:

  • Concrete golf cart paths were a life saver. The few times I had to cut across grass was a mess, even taking the highest land route possible.
  • Caddies were all caked in muck from knee down while also carrying a bag of clubs, just miserable. I saw many taking the cart path when feasible.
  • I expected a bigger crowd of fans but now realize I went at the best time. I’m sure the Friday night and weekend crowd would give a wildly different experience than I had. Probably more party and less golf, I wouldn’t have enjoyed that as much…since I had to get home.
  • As a first time live fan, I’m still comprehending the difference between those players and my game. They obviously hit the ball 50 yards farther than me with every club, so I just wasn’t that impressed when a guy dialed in a wedge from 150. I can do that from 100, so why wouldn’t he be able to from 150? He’s obviously better at the game than I am but I’m more of a Tron playing left handed view in my golf appreciation. I know there are people a lot better than me but “better” in golf is actually very subtle once you figure out how to keep it in play.
  • Speaking of subtle scoring differences, I had zero interest in watching the players putt. If I don’t know the green and watching from 30 yards away, it’s tough to appreciate.
  • I will gladly go back to a KC Korn Ferry event but not sure I’d ever drive more than an hour to watch another one.
  • Edit: should include my ticket was $10, that was absolutely worth it. I’d pay that to walk Blue Hills empty.

I have so many things to say about the whole caddy experience, but I’ll respond to this one in particular. I don’t know if we really had any fans following our group or not, I never really noticed them. When I stepped off the bag and then followed the group for the next 6 holes there was actually a decent crowd (15-20 people), but that could have just been because it was Friday afternoon.

The fans I did notice were the obnoxious idiot drunks at 4pm on Thursday around 14, yelling at my guy to putt with his eyes closed and other dumb shit. I turned around and gave them a stink eye, but what are you going to do?

I know the entire staff and membership at BHCC is extremely disappointed to have this weather hit yet again, but at the same time proud it seems like they’re actually able to finish it. They were mowing temporary tees today with a regular honda push mower because some of the others were unusable.

maybe not championship conditions ( :fu: NCAA), but everybody busted their butt to make it happen.

Just now seeing this but I would pile on with everybody saying you should do Sand Creek Station. I have stopped there on the way to Denver and am doing it again this week… Great course and the price is unreal ($35 with cart on a weekday morning).

Wellshire is a good muni, I played there often in high school and college. Should be a decent warm up for the LCC event except for the speed of the greens.

Just found this KC post, listen to No Laying Up pretty often and enjoy their YouTube content as well. Currently living in OP and love that there is some good golf conversation for KC. Surprised that one of the public courses on here that doesn’t get much mention is Adams Pointe out in Blue Springs, it’s consistently in really good shape and I think an enjoyable layout. Also drive a little further down 50 to Warrensburg to play Mules National (The UCM home course), it’s also solid. 16 handicap here, but love the game and am hoping to get back down into the single digits again (was an 8.5 in college).

Anyone interested in a round this weekend? Looks like it might stop raining long enough to play some golf…

I’ve been playing swope a lot, my favorite course on the KC30 pass. But would go pretty much anywhere as long as the course is walkable. I’m fairly new in town so I haven’t seen a ton of the courses around here yet.

Thread up or DM me!

Bad golf weekend for me (kicking off the moving process), but I think we’re due for a Swope meetup sometime in June.
