Roll Call “Chicago” (Part 2)

I signed up for a qualifier at Kankakee Elks last year thinking it would motivate me to get my game in shape. Didn’t work and I withdrew. But considering something this year. I used to play in one or two every year but stopped for some reason.

I keep rejoining CDGA with the stupid thought that I might play in tournaments again. My game has been fine but I’m not tournament sharp and my last experience trying a qualifier left a scar in my memory that is hard to overcome.

I’ll say this…if you are on the fence then just sign up. You will learn a lot about your game with the added pressure and playing everything down. Also you will likely be playing with someone better than you which is the best way to get better. Just treat it as a learning experience and you might just surprise yourself

That’s what made me want to sign up but my index has a solid 7.6 and the limit is 7.4…

I think the cdga accepts simulator rounds now…

I qualified in the first event I ever played in, state Mid-Am I think at Balmoral. Bogeyed the first, then seven straight pars, bogeyed the 9th, then 8 straight pars. Perfect drive on 18, about 140 in, and reality that I was going to get through set in. Shank. Then another shank. Somehow managed to get it on the green and two putt for a 76, which was still good enough by a couple shots. But man, that was dicey. Had another roller coaster at Ridge CC one year and missed by one. They’re fun events.

Favorite par 5 at Balmoral go!

I absolutely love crushing a drive right on number #1 to start 3 off the tee but #7 gets my vote

I played on both my high school and college teams and I’ve played in a handful of amateur tournaments as an adult. I’m well aware of what the pressure does to me and my game, which is why I’m really apprehensive about trying it again, though there’s still like 2% of me that wants to.

Seven would be a little more interesting if I could figure out how to cut the corner, but I don’t play it enough. That’s probably my favorite. Nine fits my ball flight a little better.

I’m not sure one of the guys I played with that day had ever played it before. When he hit his second above the hole on 2, I knew he may be in for a long day. Cannot be above the hole on that course.

I like coming out of the chute on #3

Is Balmoral recommended? Seems like a place that’s frustratingly fun based on above comments.

@kmcswain and I love the place…when I lived in Manteno we’d meet there all the time

Balmoral Woods sucks. There, it had to be said.

I haven’t been in a couple years but I love it. Believe ownership changed over the last couple years, no idea what kind of shape it’s in. Greens are usually slick and fun

It’s got some good holes- just depends on the conditions. They host the Will county am there every year which usually has a big turnout. You start out with a par 5 which I think is stupid and the 9/9 breakdown is 38/34. Price is a little steep for the area but when it’s in good shape it’s worth it.
