Maybe if we are lucky the internet golfing sensation known as @willknights3 might be influenced to join us. Two stripe shows better than one.
What/where/when is the game?
Won’t know till next spring but one of the Fridays in October 2020. Champaign,IL. Lincolnshire Fields Country Club.
I’ve never played Lincolnshire Fields before but would love to play in that event too!
Or this coming Saturday morning at Sunset Valley!
We should definitely play before that event. Should be easy for you. @TCRBrad as well
Would love to but cant this weekend! Sunset Valley is awesome though. Hard pins out there will be incredible
Just a quick update on the Chicagoland Refuge Rota Tournament (name pending). I’ve reached out to hosts (still waiting for confirmation from one of them), and the wheels are in motion. More details will follow, including courses, schedule, and exact format, but here’s a rough idea of what to expect:
- 5 rounds at 5 different courses in 5 different regions (South, Southwest, West, Northwest and North) hosted by 5 different Refugees over the course of 5 months(May-Sept 2020). All courses will be within an hour or so of the city. If this is successful we may expand to a central Illinois location in ‘21 or ‘22.
- The tournament buy-in will be small but not insignificant. Probably $50 for the entire season.
- Season-long handicapped scoring (best 2 or 3 scores counted). If there’s anyone with experience in coordinating a golf league, holler at your boy
- I received 14 responses to the survey. That would give us a $700 pot to work with. A small amount of that money may go to discretionary spending for small gifts (maybe ballmarkers, yardage books, etc). This will be worked out later, and the amount will be made clear to participants before any money is taken. I’m not trying to bamboozle anyone.
- All events will be open invitation, allowing for non-tournament players to play the course, but not participate in the tournament. Depending on interest we may have to cap events. Priority will always be given to tournament players
- Hosts are in charge of determining any side events, proxies, or games. I’d love to see some hickory holes or a 3-club stretch.
- There will be a tournament logo and related merchandise available for purchase.
I’m hoping to have the name, logo and courses finalized by February. At that point we’ll start signing up golfers and working on putting together a schedule with the hosts.
I know this is a ways off, but I just want to keep everyone informed. The ultimate goal is to create an annual event with a rotation of interesting courses that’s accessible to golfers of all skill levels and exposes them to courses that are, at the very least, interesting, and preferably with architectural or historic significance.
I’m open to comments or suggestions on anything, and if you have a good idea for a name, let me know.
Chicago Refugees,
I’ve been lurking for a few months but it’s finally time to #getinvolved. I love to see so many fellow Ravisloe enthusiasts since I grew up just a few minutes away from there. I caddied at Olympia Fields for nearly a decade, so I certainly have a bias towards those courses south of the city.
Living in River North without a car, my playing options are pretty limited but I generally stick to Harborside, Jackson Park, South Shore, and Marovitz unless I’m carpooling with buddies. Looking forward to meeting fellow sickos at events once warm weather returns!
If you need a season stats guy, I’m your spreadsheet guy!
Also some possibilities for a “spring training” event or two in March/April???
Welcome to the Refuge! Happy to have you!
Heck yeah! Looking forward to guesting in at least one of the Chicago events, and happy to help out with the expansion team here in Central Illinois when the time comes.
Nice work so far @VenkmansLament. Way to run with it.
You can take the metra to Ravisloe and I think they’ll get you in a cart?
I just heard about this last month! I took the 5:15 train down there earlier this summer (but walked from the station) and was back in the office by 10:30. I had to Uber to/from Millenium Station, but awfully convenient.
Ravisloe is fantastic, but their care for the course has me worried. Lots of green shrinkages and tree additions recently. Didn’t play it this year though. Really hope it isn’t a trend, bc that place can be special
I think they struggle to balance needing to be open and have people playing all the time for the $$$ and keeping it up in top shape. This year they took out a bunch of trees along the creek and are moving the tee on 12 back into the trees eventually (not sure I quite get that one).
Went out this morning before work and it was still pretty playable even though its post aeration.
@JAD and I are always looking for a few more players to get out with.
Also, @willknights3 are you Mike Knights’ son? I am a former Midlothian Junior golfer and your dad and Jerry Vidovic (formerly of Meadows) are my first two instructors. Gotta love the old junior golf days.
For sure. I think they’re doing an okay job for now, and it is still a public Ross in the Midwest. Not a common commodity
Yessir!
